Johnny Ryan interview

Johnny Ryan interview

Johnny Ryan interview 02/01/2005 08:37 PM

Mark Frauenfelder: I've written about Johnny Ryan's excellent comics before. His work is juvenille, hostile, violent, and funny. I don't really know why I like it. I hate South Park, which is also juvenille, hostile, and violent. But I don't think South Park is funny. Here's an interview with Ryan on G4techTV.

Images Bleckybw Do you ever worry about how people are construing your work – that they may think you’re a homophobe, or a racist, or anti-religion?

These are sort of elements that are part of us in some ways. Everybody has that fear of the other or whatever. But it sort of goes back into my whole sense of humor: making fun of people is funny. I don’t have any sort of agenda against minorities, or gays, or religion. I think my comic is self-deprecating in the same way that it is insulting to everyone. I try to insult everybody, that’s just my sense of humor. As far as people thinking I’m those things… I don’t know, I guess it doesn’t really have too much effect on me since I’m still doing it. It’s all for the sake of making fun of people and humor – it’s not some sort of political soapbox I’m standing on.

Johnny Fox's Freakatorium

Johnny Fox's Freakatorium 06/05/2005 11:42 PM
David Pescovitz: Today's New York Times profiles swordswallower/prestidigitator Johnny Fox, proprietor of the recently-closed Freakatorium, a cabinet of curiosities in New York City's Lower East Side. From the New York Times (photo by Douglas Healey):
Images 2005 06 04 Nyregion 04Freak.Large2In January, Mr. Fox's rent went up and he had to close. Now he has moved his wonders to a farmhouse in Connecticut where the only thing they collect these days is dust.

His narwhal tusks stand in the attic near a loose pile of taxidermic heads. His elephant's-foot liquor chest sits in the living room, seen by no one but himself.

His two-headed turtle lives downstairs in the basement with a sleepy boa constrictor. Out in the garage - forgotten - are Tom Thumb's vest and Sammy Davis Jr.'s glass eye.

"I'd love for this stuff to be in New York," said Mr. Fox, a sinewy and black-haired man of 52. "New York needs this kind of stuff, but who supports it anymore?"

It is a hard question to answer. Mr. Fox discovered that his Freakatorium was not the tourist destination he had hoped it would be. Even with its relatively modest $5 admission fee, it drew only 5 to 15 visitors a day....

He has even thought of changing the roguish name of his establishment to cater to a different clientele.

"I figured we could call it the Chamber of Wonders, not the Freak-atorium," he said. "Freak sometimes has a stigma to it. We could do something family-inviting."

Even at its height, the Freakatorium was never meant to be a profit center. It was rather Mr. Fox's chance to earn a living while sharing his obsessions with the world.

Ryan Junell 04/10/2005 11:11 PM

Ryan Junell and I first met at the University of Texas, where we both took a class about the Internet (Ryan designed UT's first web site; I caught on more slowly) and saw each other at a lot of rock shows. It wasn't until Creative Commons started up and needed a graphic designer that Ryan and I reunited and became friends. Ryan is responsible for, among other things, our tasteful and fetching logo, the amazing animations in Get Creative and Reticulum Rex (and the latter's anagrammed title), our DVD, many of our t-shirt designs and printed materials, and CC's close connections with the Bay Area electronic music scene (where Ryan is a sort of freelance video artist). Along with Matt, it's Ryan we have to thank for Creative Commons' bold visual identity.

If you haven't checked out Ryan's handiwork outside of Creative Commons, you ought to. His See the Elephant! video installation toured the country late last year, and his music videos for Spoon and The Natural History nail the aesthetics of those bands. (Ryan's hilarious and sharp video for The Soft Pink Truth was, along with Anime, South Park, Hello Kitty, and Schoolhouse Rock, the inspiration for the look and feel of "Get Creative.)

Ryan is pursuing more solo projects now, but I hope one day to team up with him again on some sort of media project. It's extremely rare to find someone whose taste jibes so well with your own -- or better put, who is able to read your mind, and then do you one better.
