"The real estate
bubble's gonna pop!" You seem to hear that all the time... But
dig deeper and you find that other people
don't even think there's a bubble. Others think there's a
bubble, but it's gonna
keep
growing. Then, just to make it interesting, you've got others who
said the bubble was going to pop
back
in 2002. Why is first-time home-buying this friggin'
difficult?!

Nintendo DS Leaks UHF Noise
12/22/2004 01:36 AM
Nintendo's
new DS handheld gaming system (which I've been told is pretty much out
of stock everywhere, although Nintendo is supposed to drop another
shipment on the 22nd) apparently dumps out video noise that can be
picked up by some older, presumably unshielded televisions. That
probably wouldn't necessitate an entire post, but Jim Younkin busted
out his old Sony Watchman to test it, which is one of my favorite
gadgets ever (I had a later model that I would often impress nerdy
girls with on field trips for the 10 to 15 minutes that the batteries
would last).

CDW Leaks Information About New iPaqs
07/13/2004 10:05 AM
Looks like online office
retailer CDW jumped the gun a bit with HP's new iPaq line, revealing
some surprisingly disappointing information about the rz1715,
specifically. According to CDW's information, the rz1715 will not be
using the Second Edition of Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, will not
have dual-slots as previously rumored, and is listed as being loaded
with a minuscule 25MB of RAM. One upside, though, is that the shipping
time for all the new iPaqs is listed as 1-2 weeks -- if you're feeling
frisky, you could probably pre-order now.
Brighthand has a breakdown off all the leaked information about all
five new iPaqs.

obvious to me that UBL is going to be huge and I don’t understand why

Web Leaks Reveal Rio Chroma, Rio Forge
Web Leaks Reveal Rio Chroma, Rio Forge
07/31/2004 10:44 AMA leak on the temporary web
development site for Rio Audio accidentally revealed the names of two
new audio players, the flash memory-based 'Rio Forge,' and a companion
unit to the Rio Karma called the 'Rio Chroma.' In addition to the
text-only leaks, both the Karma and the Chroma were listed as having a
10,000 song capacity, which leads us to believe that both devices will
have a 40GB option.
Before being pulled from the development site, the Karma and Chroma
were described as having, "docking station support (RCA on the Karma;
digital coax on the Chroma) with line-level out, [and] both are
perfect for listening to your digital music on your home stereo. The
docking station's light pulses to your music too!"
We'll show you pictures as soon as possible. Hopefully the Chroma
is more than just a Karma with a color screen or with colored shells
(that would be okay, but I want new features, too).

The New Stock Bubble
04/13/2004 09:56 AMHere we go again: Stocks in unknown and untested tech and biotech
companies -- and supposed nanotech (my favorite new bubble category)
--are soaring. Price to earnings? Surely you're kidding about the
earnings part.
The market is frothy again. Even solid companies are selling way above
historical P/E ratios.
Be wary. You think Wall Street has totally cleaned up its act? Get
real. These guys are incorrigible.
If you're going to jump in again, you should at least be double-sure
that your broker's corporate parent isn't getting millions in fees
from companies it's pushing at retail. Of course, they're probably
working on some new way to con you.
Meanwhile, I've had lots of e-mails recently touting micro-capitalized
companies founded in in places like Nevada, headquartered in places
like the Cayman Islands and claiming big plans to make a huge score
in, say, China. Oh, sure, those have to be solid enterprises.
I'm sympathetic to most scam victims. But anyone who buys a stock
based on an unsolicited e-mail recommendation, or who even looks at
such a thing with any intention other than derisive laughter, is an
idiot who should not complain after losing his money.
Period.

The Google Bubble
04/26/2004 05:27 PMEveryone's talking about Google because the company has to release
some key financial data this week, causing lots of folks to assume an
IPO filing is in the works. No doubt that's true, but I keep wondering
why -- except to make the insiders happy -- this IPO is going to
happen at this stage.
Here we have a successful company, making (reportedly) tons of money
and investing it wisely. Does Google need the distraction an IPO will
bring as much as the insiders -- especially the venture capitalists --
crave the cash-out?
More on this in the next few days...
