I have a long and silent war with the skaterats that live
down my street, who have of late taken to calling themselves the
'Dobkings' (our street is 'Dobbin,' get it?) and spray painting their
new stencils all over the street's dumpsters. I wage this war normally
by walking down the street, using a hula-hoop motion and my gut's
natural inertia to rotate my head, avoiding their smiles.
Next time, though, I will hit them with a blast from the Sunriser,
the new headlamp system for skateboards from DB Sumo. It's designed to
be installed between the trucks and deck of a skateboard, but will
serve just as well as a distraction while I waddle the last forty feet
around the corner. They're 20 bucks a pop, plus shipping.

An $800 phone does not a Treo killer make, but man,
that's a nice form factor. I can't wait to play around with one of
these in the future—it could take me over to Windows Mobile.

obvious solution to the conflicting priority levels.

The Benq Z2 phone is an awesome, fun form factor, but
it's going to sink like a stone in this market, if for the funky
keypad if nothing else. It's tiny, though, and has plenty of
capability.

Yes, I finally made it on the showfloor! After hours of
bopping around, trying to find just a drop of internet, I finally
through all caution to the wind and actually looked at gadgets.
Samsung's booth in particular was full of yummy things, like this
nice-looking DMB portable television that we'll never get here
(because we don't have DMB, not because they don't love us).

Guess that means I'll be stealing the 102-inch prototype they had in

I almost forgot my favorite thing in the
Samsung booth: this video camera controller with lots of buttons,

that video control board that sat in my apartment for a year, either,
solely on the merit of its 100+ LED backlit buttons.

This was a nice compromise: this 5.1 speaker system could
be used in a set-top configuration, with all five speakers in a single
box, or each individual speaker could be pulled out and placed
elsewhere in the room (if you ran a wire to it).
The next booth over had Samsung's wireless speakers on display, but
they were 1) hissing badly, and 2) attached to the wall with speaker
wires.

Here's Samsung's smallest new portable slimline DVD

funny that it had a recessed circle in the top, yet that door on the

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?
12/18/2003 12:58 PMIt took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be
able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated,
that some researchers are giving up on that idea and
using
Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs.
However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the
upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out
how to make a
robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at
points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking
start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a
slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a
start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the
robot run.

05/06/2004 05:17 PMSimson Garfinkel has written a new Technology
Review article on the subject of Robot Sex - not sex as in robot
procreation but as in robot gender. Is your robot a male or female? It
turns out Honda thinks Asimo
is a male and consistently refers to it as "he". The Roomba, on the
other hand,
is female according to the author. The article also mentions the
Neiman Marcus his & her
robots which included a male and female robot. There's a related

everything about this $1,450 'KHR-1' kit from Korean firm Wow Robot,
but just from watching the video I can put together that this little
humanoid bot can kick (soccer-style), shuffle step, pick itself up off
the floor, and assume any number of badass fighting poses. All 17
different joints are powered by a single motor, and there is even
software to pre-script the movements on your computer and play them
back again and again. Probably a little out of most casual robotics
fans' price range, but for those that really like contributing to our
species' ultimate destruction, you know, on the side, the Wow
Robot is a lot of cybernetic doom for not a lot of cash. (Thanks,
Soonkack!)
