tn_flexbats.jpg imageDouble A rechargeable batteries are by far the most commonly used, but there are definitely times when C-cell and D-cell batteries would be handy to have around. Rather than provide rechargeable cells in a variety of sizes, Sanyo's Family Battery Charger Kit comes with four AA batteries and a set a 'FlexBat' adapters, hollow plastic cylinders that act as spacers to allow you to use the rechargeable AAs inside C- or D-cell-sized spaces. Of course, the AA cells won't run as long as the larger cells would, but in a pinch it's a handy way to always have the size of battery you need available.

It cost them $40 and five minute's effort, (although this definitely voids the warranty). The $40 includes a tool set and installation guide, and if you tack on the coupon code 'HIGHROAD' when you check out you can get the NewerTech RoadTrip FM Transmitter device for only $9.99. Not bad, especially if you've got an older iPod (1st or 2nd gen) with a worn out battery.

iPod battery swap surprisingly easy

iPod battery swap surprisingly easy 09/08/2004 09:45 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Plenty of people have swapped a new battery into their iPod, so the fact that I did it, too, is nothing new. But the fact that someone as clumsy as I am did it in about ten minutes without destroying the iPod is surprising. If you're as fumbled fingered as I am and have been afraid to open your iPod, I hope this gives you the courage to take action.

Here's what happened: Last year, I gave my six-year-old daughter my old 10 Gig old-style iPod, because I got a 20 Gig model. Last month, she started complaining that the battery wasn't holding a charge. This is a known problem with iPods. Last week, her iPod was dying after running for just a few minutes. It was time to crack it open.

Using Froogle, I searched on "iPod battery" and found this replacement unit for $30. The shipping was around $6 and it arrived via 2-day UPS.

DSC03822When it arrived (on time), I opened it and found the battery, some instructions (the same ones found here), and a cute-as-a-button miniature screwdriver with a little clip on it so you can insert it in a shirt pocket. Following the instructions, I carefully inserted the screwdriver into the crack between the metal case and clear plastic lid. But the screwdriver's blade was way too thick to get into the seam. I ended up gouging the plastic.

DSC03827I set the screwdriver aside and grabbed a kitchen knife. It took about three or four minutes of tentative probing before I could get the knife blade worked in far enough to give me enough leverage to start to separate the top from the bottom. Once I got it started, though, I was able to use the adorable little screwdriver to pry the iPod the rest of the way open.

DSC03831The old battery was attached to the hard drive with a couple of strips of padded, double-sided tape. I tore the tape a little while removed the old battery, and one of the strips got stuck to itself, but it wasn't a big deal. The battery has a couple of wires coming out of it, ending in a tiny white plug that goes into a socket. It was easy to unplug. I took the new battery and stuck it onto the sticky tape. Then I plugged it in the little socket. The cover snapped right on.

DSC03834After charging it overnight, I gave it to my daughter and it has been running for hours. Mission accomplished!

lawsuit
06/05/2005 11:20 PM
Apple is offering consumers who had battery problems with older versions of the popular iPod digital music player $50 vouchers and extended service warranties under a tentative settlement in a class-action lawsuit. According to AP, lawyers representing consumers in the state court case said that the settlement could affect as many as 2 million people nationwide who purchased first-, second- and third-generation iPods through May 2004. Apple confirmed the settlement but has not officially commented. The settlement comes after eight consumers filed a suit in 2003, alleging that the iPod failed to live up to claims that the rechargeable battery would last the product's lifetime and play music continuously for up to 10 hours. According to the terms of the settlement, people who fill out a claim form are entitled to receive $50 redeemable toward the purchase of any Apple products or services except iTunes downloads or iTunes gift certificates. Consumers will be notified of the tentative settlement in three ways: by e-mail, by letters, and through advertisements in USA Today and Parade Magazine in the next month, said Elizabeth C. Pritzker, an attorney at Burlingame-based law firm Cotchett, Pitre, Simon & McCarthy LLP, which represented two plaintiffs. Apple has agreed to pay up to $2.8 million to the two law firms that represented consumers.

Thoughts On The Google IPO Filing

Thoughts On The Google IPO Filing 04/30/2004 02:05 AM
Well, ever since Google filed their S-1 this morning, all the news seems to have turned into all Google, all the time. Obviously, there are plenty of other places covering the story, but after reading through the S-1, I have a few thoughts that may not be covered elsewhere. News.com has an excel lent roundup of many of the Google IPO high points, but the S-1 itself is worth reading. The opening "owner's manual" is very straightforward in revealing how the team at Google views the IPO. In some ways, it's very reminiscent of the incredibly refreshing financi al statements from Overstock.com, which remind you just how much misleading crap is shoved into most financial filings.

The decision to go with an auction model for the IPO isn't a huge surprise (it was rumored last October ). What is interesting, however is that they don't seem to be doing it through W.R. Hambrecht, who is considered the expert in Dutch Auction IPOs. In fact, the filing hints at the fact that Google is making use of their own experiences auctioning off their advertisements in figuring out how to do this auction. That seems a little scary as (a) auctioning off ad inventory and IPO shares is quite different and (b) you always get a little worried when a company relies too heavily on their own experience in an area where they're not experts. Still, the decision to review all potential investors to make sure they know what they're investing in (possibly with a test of some sort) while banning anyone who looks as though they're trying to game the system is a very smart move, and should help Google end up with more informed investors.

The folks on Wall Street must have very mixed opinions about this whole affair. They want Google to go public more than anything in the world, but the setup of this IPO is really designed to route around their usual (questionable) methods as much as possible. Still, since no banks wanted to miss out on taking the firm public, it looks like it wasn't that hard to sign up the underwriters. There will be a few other interesting things to watch for as a result of this. Will other companies try to go public on similar terms, and will Wall Street allow it? Will they claim it's a special case, or will this "educate" pre-IPO companies that they don't have to play by the old rules. If that does happen, Morgan Stanley and CSFB could benefit by having the experience of running such an unconventional offering, while also acting as though they're willing to avoid the silly Wall Street games.

The other item that's worth noting is whether or not this structure actually works, or if the pressure really does become too much. From everything Google has done so far, I'm sure they believe that they can withstand the pressure. If anyone can, it probably is them. Reading through the S-1 you realize they put a lot of thought into how to structure this. However, the riskiest thing I see in the S-1 is the fact that this unconventional IPO is really designed to keep the power in the hands of Eric Schmidt, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. There are plenty of reasons why that's good - because they've done a fantastic job so far, and they appear to function quite well as a team. However, it makes me question the succession plan and how the company continues to manage should any of the three leave. The structure they're setting up is basically designed to work great, assuming the three of them all continue to work there. Should something happen to one of them, or should the working relationship falter, the company seems less well structured to deal with the change. Hopefully they are putting in place plans for such things, but it is still a risk. Overall, I'm impressed by the way they've put this together and I hope it works out well for them. It would be nice to see a company actually show Wall Street that the bankers are supposed to be serving the companies, and not the other way around. I hope it's the start of a trend.
