01/22/2004 03:21 AMPlans for Fossil Inc.'s Palm OS-based smart wristwatch are back to
square one, as the version that was expected to be out in the middle
of last year has been shelved in favor of a less expensive and more
powerful version of the watch now scheduled for release in the middle
of this year, Fossil said Wednesday.

For those of you who don't mind adorning your wrist with what
appears to be a small, metal-framed end table comes the Wrist PDA from
Fossil. Possibly the first wrist watch to come with a stylus, (albeit
one that looks like the nail file from a mini-Leatherman) Fossil has
jam-packed every ounce of PalmOS goodness they could into a little
square. As a bonus, they've graciously packed it in an adorable
orange tin which you can later use to store your Tinker Toys or
fingers collection. FossilWristPDA.com has a surprisingly balanced
review/getting started guide that gets only a little bit smarmy (and
we'll cut them some slack, since they've obviously been anxiously
sitting on that domain for a while). It seems that writing on the
watch has a bit of a learning curve, but using most third party
software works well and allows you to pack quite a bit of
functionality onto your wrist. It's only taken like 3 years to get
here.

Shadow Robot Hand Finally Ships
06/05/2005 11:13 PMFuture Feeder reports that the Shadow Robot Company is finally
selling their long promised dextrous robot
hand. Long time robots.net readers may remember previous reports on
the
Shadow hand prototypes going back to 2001. The hand is powered by air
muscles and controlled by pneumatic valves. Fingers have four degrees
of
freedom and the thumb five degrees of freedom. A 2DOF wrist connects
the
hand to the block of air muscles in the forearm. Detailed technical
specs (PDF format) on the mechanics, kinematics, and a sensors are
available. Their webpage also includes several video clips
of the hand in action. A GNU/Linux real-time system with a CAN
interface
controls everything. All of Shadow's code is Free Software licensed
under GNU GPL.

wristwatch?
10/29/2003 12:10 AMI just saw an engineer take his watch off, untuck a small USB cable,
and pass it to another. The second guy plugged the watch into his
notebook. I'm a little stunned and puzzled by this. I suddenly feel
like I've been living in an electronics junk yard. What are these USB
watches? Do they just store data (like a keychain "disk")? Contact
lists? Porn? I need to look into this. I also need to get out and

Say
what you like about the Israeli Defense Force, they know how to name a
technology. The 'V-RAMBO' is a wrist-mounted TV that can receive
tactical video broadcasts from drones and military vehicles to make
for quick target recognition. It's sort of crazy huge, though, and has
a thick video feed cable running up the arm. Just because they named
it Rambo doesn't mean the technology has to be stuck in the '80s.

the real purpose of these kits are - to siphon money away from filthy
Burning Man participants and/or gangbangers. But whether you're caked

Down Low Glow can be yours for just $100.
Or you can spring for the two-light set for $150. Might as
well.

Fossil Wrist PDA Reviewed Again
(Verdict: Outdated)
03/22/2005 04:46 PM
TheRegister has gotten their paws on a Fossil Wrist
PDA, the FX2008, and posted their review of it. After having waited
"an extra year," the reviewer says it has some serious pitfalls
— it's too damn big and has too short a battery life. One is a
critical blow to the "watch" aspect, and the other a critical blow to
the "PDA" aspect. I'll let you figure out which is which.
Fatality.
