Pearl Harbor Anniversary
12/08/2003 03:26 AMYesterday was the 62nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Maryam and I
visited the site last year. Being over a sunken ship where 1177 people
died is very sobering. The ship is still leaking oil to the surface.

moving interviews I have ever heard and was certainly a highlight of
the weekend. She is a beautifully calm person with seemingly the
right approach to an awfully violent world.

Economy: A Financial Pearl Harbor???
Economy: A Financial Pearl Harbor???
01/28/2004 06:41 PMFrom
The Connection's archives: Robert Rubin on his new book (
In an Uncertain World) and the
economic well-being of the US. Worth the time spent to listen to
it. While there is a
risk of a financial melt-down
(ie. due to a lack of job growth, historically high short term
interest rates, etc.), the real problem is
uncertainty.
Risk can be projected and compensated for (if you do get burned
by risk, it's your fault). Uncertainty can't be quantified or
analyzed. It can only guarded against by not placing yourself in
a position where uncertainty can't topple you easily. We are in
a position where uncertainty can put us in a crunch in very
short order.
For example, uncertainty is an event like 9/11 and the subsequent
invasion of Iraq. This sequence of events were unanticipatable, in
any reasonable way, but they have had a major impact on our
financial status. Some other uncertainties that we have on our
plate include a series of major terrorist attacks on US soil that
negatively impact regional economies and confidence, a
failure/quagmire in Iraq that drags on for years at an escalating cost
and a global loss of confidence, and full war with North Korea.
Any of these events could cause the budget deficit to surge to
unsustainable levels over an extended period, cause the US to lose its
safe harbor status, and turn the rest of the world against us
(not willing to help us when we are in crisis).
This is exactly how we could convert (through our lack of
preparedness) the risk of long-term financial crisis into a
short term crisis. Given this, why isn't fiscal responsibility a
National Security issue??? If our economy collapses due to
external uncertainties becoming real events, we would be hard pressed
to defend ourselves. We wouldn't be able to afford
it. This is the national security issue of our time.

Pearl Jam's Internet Distribution
Strategy Working So Far
11/17/2003 03:14 AMEarlier this year we wrote about how Pearl Jam finished up their
contract with Sony Music and had decided to push forward independently
with an
internet
distribution model. While they're still figuring out how it will
work for full length albums, it appears to be doing just fine for
singles. While they haven't fully embraced digital distribution,
they've successfully
sold a bunch of
CDs of a new single from their own site, and it's received plenty
of listens on RealNetworks - where it was available to stream for
free. On Monday, it will be available for purchase on iTunes. The
band is using this as something of a test to see what they can do with
music. Hopefully, they'll go even further into offering up music for
free that doesn't come with restrictions, and use that to sell
additional goods and services - whether its CDs, concert tickets,
access to the band or whatever. No matter what they do, you can bet
that many bands
and record industry execs will be watching
closely.

Pocket-Lint manages to score
the first proper Rio Carbon review I've seen, and certainly the first
to use Guns & Roses as their test music. One thing that is a nice
is the Carbon's drag-and-drop ability, because while music managing
software can be very nice, it's also nice to have the option to just
copy over some music (or whatever) via Windows' Explorer or the Mac's
Finder. From the sound of it, it seems Rio has a real winner in the
5GB hard disk music player. The question is, will the consumer market
think so?

I'm glad Rio is actually going to push their new 5GB hard
disk-based Carbon player a bit instead of just letting it languish in
the market - it looks like a pretty solid product (I haven't used it
yet). To that end, they're running a special promotion for the first
500 people to order the new $250 player that includes a
custom-engraved, numbered back, a free shipping upgrade to 2 day air,
and a 3 month/20 track download option from Napster. Oh, and lest we
forget, a limited edition collectors box that looks suspiciously like
someone else's. It might not be enough to sway undecided purchasers,
but if you were already leaning that way, might as well give it a
whirl.

Carbon Fiber Asus V6V

There's a rule in the tech
industry—making something out of carbon fiber makes it cooler. I
don't care if it's a toilet plunger or a car hood, carbon fiber just
sounds more interesting than "shiny plastic." Therefore, we aren't
surprised to see that Asus is giving it a go in the carbon fiber
notebook niche.
A few other folks have gone this route, but Asus seems to have hit
a sweet spot. The V6V isn't too ostentatious. It's got a nice Pentium
M-based chipset, and it's acceptably light—a 15" screen at 5.5
pounds—to warrant the carbon fiber.
