Windows AntiSpyware

Windows AntiSpyware 01/06/2005 02:48 PM

Download details: Windows AntiSpyware (Beta): This is the result of Microsoft's purchase of Giant. (that was quick...) I had a great experience with this tool today. It found seven spyware apps on my machine. Seven. And I thought I had a really clean machine.

Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed.

Don't let the "Windows license validation" thing throw you — you can use it without validating. I wonder if this will be more effective than other tools because it knows all the Windows API secrets?

Chalk one up for the good guys. The FTC today announced that it's filed a restraining order against a company that allegedly offered Internet users a spyware scanner program that falsely reported that computers were infected with spyware, and which failed to remove any spyware at all from infected machines. (We detailed some similarly sketchy businesses in last fall's story, Poor Defenders.)

"In an effort to induce consumers to purchase and download the defendants' "anti-spyware" software from their Web site, the defendants make numerous material deceptive representations in their marketing media," the FTC report says."

"First, after describing the various dangers of spyware surreptitiously installed on a computer, the defendants represent that they have "scanned" or otherwise examined the consumer's computer and have detected that spyware already resides on it. In numerous instances, the defendants make these spyware detection claims when the computer has no spyware residing on it."

Utah judge halts antispyware law 06/23/2004 12:35 PM
A district court judge in Utah ruled in favor of a New York company that makes advertising software, sometimes referred to as "spyware," that tracks Web surfers' activities, blocking the nation's first-ever law targeting spyware. Judge Joseph C. Fratto Jr. of the Third Judicial District Court in Salt Lake City issued an injunction Tuesday that temporarily blocked the Utah law, known as the Spyware Control Act, which was signed into law by Utah Governor Olene Walker on March 23, after WhenU.com Inc. applied for a temporary restraining order, claiming the law would cause "irreparable harm" to its business.

(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.
