Native American criticism

Native American criticism 08/09/2004 11:47 AM
What's an Indian, Anyway? Just one of the essays exploring real vs. fake in Native American culture posted At Wanderer's Well. Lots of opinionated reviews of the work of Louise Erdrich, N. Scott Momaday, Tony Hillerman, Ursula K. Le Guin and many others. The surprisingly rich personal site from a former academic (who now calls his departure from scholarly publishing "felicitous") offers hours of reading with detailed side-trips and fascinating links.

RSS native parsing in the next Firebird

RSS native parsing in the next Firebird 02/10/2004 02:42 AM

This is new to me. I was checking out the nightly builds of Firebird 0.8 betas (windows and linux, mac< /a>) and they' ve got an rss button and panel that parses RSS, with titles linking to the main window. Slick, but they need to let you track which ones have new/old items.

update: It turns out I'm actually a dumbass. I installed this RSS extension so long ago I forgot about it, and because I never saw it show up in any menu, I figured it never "took" on my Firebird install. Then when I had the new nightly build the toolbars were out of whack on first run so I went to customize them and saw the RSS button for the first time, and assumed it came with Firebird 0.8. My bad.

Oracle 9i is a native XML database

Oracle 9i is a native XML database 06/27/2002 02:08 AM
At this point I have to say there's little reason for products like Software AG Tamino to exist anymore. Even if there is some speed advantage to Tamino and brethren, it's simply lacking in almost every other regard. This is especially damning given that Tamino and brethren will cost more for most simple implementations. There's plenty of room for native XML databases to play in smaller apps and for apps requiring DTDs, but when it comes to large corporate repositories of data, there's really no reason now to go away from the existing relational databases. I expect IBM and Microsoft to be coming out with products of similar power in the near future. -- Kimbro Staken

Talis Moving Towards Native RSS Feeds,
Too?

Talis Moving Towards Native RSS Feeds,
Too?
02/01/2005 10:10 PM

Last week, Paul Miller left a comment on this site saying that Talis, an ILS vendor in the U.K., had blogged some ideas about RSS in the catalog. I meant to get back to it, but didn't until today when I also saw a link to Talis RSS Feed via del.icio.us/rss.

So first of all, blogged?? An ILS vendor is blogging?? Heck, yeah. Check out Panlibus here! The RSS post is titled RSS Is Not Just Another TLA, and it includes a discussion about patron data feeds. Go and score, Talis!

Even better, it's an interesting blog, comprised of musings and reflections by Talis staff. They even blogged last week's ALA Midwinter conference. I'm subscribed (feed here)!

When you're done there, check out their explanation of RSS, which is where you'll also find a link to their company RSS feed! There's even an RSS heart and an easy-to-find link to the feed on their home page! Goal-o!

All of which has to make you think that they're on the verge of offering native RSS feeds out of the catalog. That would make two vendors, and I've now heard about two others that are working on it. If just those four vendors go live with feeds this year, I think we'll have an official tipping point!

Sony May Support Native MP3 (What Took
You So Long?)
09/22/2004 04:23 PM

Oh ho! Sony, who I had already pretty much counted out of the portable music game, has just stepped back up to the plate with the announcement (which makes for really boring baseball, really) that they will be supporting MP3 on their players, starting with flash players and going from there. That's the good news. The bad news is that their plans aren't official yet, so they could still drop the ball if they aren't careful. Oh, and there's nothing saying that the existing product line - on which millions of dollars worth of marketing and distribution have been slathered - will be able to be upgraded to support native MP3 playback.

Figure it out, Sony! And hurry!

Fabl - A Native Programming Language for the Semantic Web
http://fabl.net/

Fabl (pronounced "fable") is a native programming language for the Semantic Web. The Fabl object model is the RDF property graph, and the Fabl type system implements a subset of the OWL web ontology language (RDF is the W3C standard data representation for the current generation of Semantic Web technology, while OWL is a W3C standard for describing classes of RDF objects). However, this manual does not assume prior familiarity with RDF, OWL, or other Semantic Web technologies. Learning Fabl is one way of learning about the Semantic Web. Fabl programs themselves are represented as Semantic Web objects. This representation of computation within the Semantic Web allows active content to be integrated seamlessly into RDF repositories, and provides a programming environment which simplifies the manipulation of RDF when compared to use of a conventional language via an API. Fabl programs may be expressed as RDF objects using standard RDF syntax, or via a conventional syntax which might be described as Javascript (or its standardized variant ECMAScript) enhanced with types and qualified property names. The language is designed to be easy to learn for programmers familiar with the conventional JavaScript/HTML/XML/DOM web–programming model. In fact, this alternative syntax allows programmers to create and manipulate RDF objects without needing to learn the XML-based RDF syntax - a syntax that can be difficult to master. This has been added to the Semantic Web Research section of Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.
