Creative -- the company that recently "declared war" against Apple Computer Inc's iPod -- has introduced new versions of its Zen Micro digital music player at this week's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new Zen Micro players -- aimed at Windows users -- are available in 1GB, 4GB and 6GB models.

Creative said Thursday it will introduce three new versions of its popular Zen Micro audio player to meet "strong consumer demand." The new players will come in 1GB, 4GB and 6GB models. The original Zen Micro had a capacity of 5GB, and according to the company, sold out quickly in many retail locations.

Altoid Tin Case for Creative Zen Micro

Altoid Tin Case for Creative Zen Micro 02/01/2005 09:08 PM

altoid_micro.jpg imageWhile Creative's "declaration of war" against the iPod was sort of goofy considering their relative sales this holiday season, the Zen Micro still did a very respectable amount of business (around 2 million units, if I recall correctly). Enough units, at least, that the players' users are starting to plan together, A-Team style, to figure out some pretty great hacks, like this adorable Altoids tin mod (if we're expanding the definition to include drilling through a piece of aluminum and gluing felt) some fresh-breathed lad came up with. It just so happens that the smaller Altoids tin (and other mints, too) is the perfect size to hold a Zen Micro, and by drilling a hole for the headphone in the top, the 1/8-inch plug holds it in place.

Creative Performa MP3 Players

Creative Performa MP3 Players 09/08/2004 04:52 AM
Creative seems to be taking some hints from Apple's previous playbook: flood the market with many models of MP3 players and hope that some of these models stick. :-)
But seriously, Creative does have an advantage over Apple here in Asia: there's no iTunes Music Store. Now that Apple has showed the world how to run an online music business, the first-mover advantage in the rest of the world is ever more important. If Apple don't move fast, the Asia online music market will be dominated by Microsoft.

GarageB and.com Leaves Door Open

GarageBand.com -- a site that both hosts independent music and uses a peer-review process to identify hot bands -- is offering the Creative Commons Music Sharing License to artists who want to distribute their tunes for free, the company said Monday.

Nice. GarageBand is one of the biggest legal mp3 sites and it's cool that they are offering a CC license to their artists. Alternative distribution of music using CC licenses is clearly a good idea and helps people understand the whole Free Culture concept. I really do believe that the issue will become more and more about how to gain attention, not how to charge for delivery. It is changing from a delivery problem to a discovery problem as storage and bandwidth become commodities. Discovery is cheap only when you have a monopoly on people's attention. Obviously, media companies like Clear Channel are trying to keep that monopoly, but I think users are going to dump those locked up modes as new modes of discovery become available. I think that the main way to get attention will be to become part of the conversation and you can only do that if you promote active sharing of your music and content.

Nomic World: By the players, for the

05/26/2004 03:15 PM
[This is an edited version of the talk I gave last fall at the State of Play conference.] I'm sort of odd-man-out in a Games and Law conference, in that my primary area of inquiry isn't games but social software. Not only am I not a lawyer, I don't even spend most of my time thinking about game problems. I spend my time thinking about software that supports group interaction across a fairly wide range of social patterns. So, instead of working from case law out, which has been a theme here (and here's where I insert the "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer) I'm going to propose a thought experiment looking from the outside in. And I want to pick up on something that Julian [Dibbell] said earlier about game worlds: 'users are the state.' The thought experiment I want to propose is to agree with that sentiment, and to ask "How far can we go in that direction?" Instead of looking for the places where game users are currently suing or fighting one another, forcing the owners of various virtual worlds to deal with these things one crisis at a time, I want to ask the question "What would happen if we wanted to build a world where we maximized the amount of user control? What would that look like?" I'm going to make that argument in three pieces. First, I'm going to do a little background on group structure and the tension between the individual and the group. Then I want to contrast briefly governance in real and virtual worlds. Finally I want to propose a thought experiment on placing control of online spaces in the hands of the users. - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/nomic.html

Resumes are Micro-content

Resumes are Micro-content 07/01/2004 04:59 PM

Right on to my brother Lucas Gonze - who not only groks it (in regards to Resumes)- but is also helping to establish playlists as a clear, open, sharable new kind of micro-content!

Lucas writes....

I know of three kinds of syndicateable microcontent right now: reviews, weblog entries, and playlists. It just struck me that resumes are microcontent.

We could easily have standard XML format for resumes. Given that, resume editors could compete to be the best at handling the standard, XSLT and CSS could be developed independently of any one resume, and job sites could import the data rather than force the user to type it into a custom format.

Update from George Hotelling:

The HR XML project already has a schema for resumes.

I'm heading out of town right now - for a month.

We're planning on holding "micro-content" dinners in NYC, Amsterdam (x2), Paris, Trieste and London.

But you'll have to tune to this channel - for details.

No reason to plan too far ahead.

Add your name to the Wiki - if you'd like to attend - so we can get a head count.

We're going to have the world's f irst Micro-Content dinner at Grand Sichuan on 9th Ave. - between 50th & 51st - this Thursday, August 19th - at 6:30 PM.

This place comes highly recommended by my wife's friend Yaroo - and eGullet.com< /a>. They have plenty of room - and we'll have plenty to talk about.

My friend Kenny Schaffer has offered his place for an after-set. He lives around the corner from the Plaza in a penthouse on 58th st. Kenny used to be Jimmi Hendrix's publicist.

Anyway - I'm really excited about coming back to NYC - where I lived between 80-82.

Mac mini Shrinks to micro, nano, and

Glenn Fleishman (~840 words)

Apple's huge success with the Mac mini's small form factor and low price has caused the company to look more closely at making computers in a variety of small sizes. That push was reflected in a long segment of today's press conference, with Steve Jobs laying out the reception the Mac mini has received with users and the press. He then jumped into the product announcements, and oh, what announcements! Just as the iPod broke from the pack of MP3 players and took over that market, these diminutive new Macs - the micro, nano, and pico - promise to change expectations of what computers are and how we use them. Steve Jobs said that Apple anticipates shipping all three models in the second half of 2005, in time for the holiday shopping season.

What is the Creative Zen Nano Plus?

What is the Creative Zen Nano Plus? 04/13/2005 08:57 AM

Mike writes:

I was skimming the stores in search of a good mp3 player deal [I lost all my friends trying to get one for free] and I stumbled upon something called a Zen Nano Plus. It's a 1 GB player, and it comes in the usual array of candy colors we've come to expect from Creative.
Some Google searching reveals only prices, capacity, and colors, and it looks a lot an iPod shuffle fighter, to me—512MB and 1GB sizes for $100ish and $150ish, respectively.

But the real question is: will it have a screen?

Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro

Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro 08/18/2004 11:06 AM

audadv_unit.jpg imageI was about to unleash the hounds on Turtle Beach for pushing their new Audio Advantage Micro as a "Virtual Surround Sound USB Audio Adapter," because just about every computer made in the last five years or so has been able to do that passable (if not ear-blowing) stereo "surround" out-of-phase trick. But lo! I actually read more than the first paragraph (don't expect this to become a habit) and discovered that it also has an option to connect up the $30 unit to a real 5.1 system - via a digital TOS-LINK optical cable - to provide actual, honest-to-god surround sound. So if you look at it that way, the fake headphones surround option is sort of cool, because now the point of failure is you and your lack of 5.1-capable headphones/ears. Turtle Beach would give you more, you see, if you could just hang with them.

Considering there are at least 130 private companies with some sort of "nano" in their name (if not their business), investment banks are starting to create "nano" indexes to track the sector and ris k overhyping the nanotechnology sector like dot-coms during the Internet boom. The differences this time around are that investors may be more cautious now and that well-established, public companies are already investing in nanotechnology to head-off the little start-ups. So the nano-bust might be, no pun intended, smaller.
