Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software.
Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps
reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC
performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet
settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous
protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over 50 ways
spyware can enter your PC.
The worldwide SpyNet™ community plays a key role in determining
which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft
researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, which
are automatically downloaded to your PC, so you stay up-to-date.
The user must be an administrator to install this application.

situations, such as when you double-click on a .EXE file compressed

could potentially contain a virus. These caution messages can easily
be turned off by WinZip users who frequently work with the file types

Microsoft launches beta of digital music
download service
09/01/2004 06:57 PM
Xeni Jardin:
MSN Music launched today.
From a CBS Marketwatch report:
Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled details of a new service for
downloading digital music, placing it squarely in competition with
Apple's rival iTunes music service. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft
will launch a preview version of its new MSN Music service tomorrow
that will allow users to legally download songs mostly for 99 cents
each. The service will also make entire albums available, the majority
of which will cost $9.99, the company said. Microsoft's push into the
arena for downloadable music trails Apple's hugely successful iPod
digital music player and its own iTunes music service. Apple also
charges 99 cents for each song downloaded through iTunes.

SK-Earthlink Links South Korean Mobile
Operator, Earthlink Networks
02/01/2005 09:13 PM Mobile operator SK Telecom and Earthlink Networks launch 3G/Wi-Fi
combo firm: Sky Dayton is the CEO of SK-Earthlink, a new MVNO (Mobile
Virtual Network Operator) that will sign up end users with the promise
of integrated Wi-Fi and third-generation cellular data networks for
voice and data through a single handset. Dayton founded Earthlink and
Boingo Wireless. SK Telecom provides service to 18 million customers
in South Korea, and their sister company in the SK Group, SK Teletech,
makes advanced handsets for domestic use and internationally to China,
Israel, Kazakhstan, and Taiwan. Dayton said in an interview today that
SK Telecom offers a remarkable array of handsets including units with
hard drives, five megapixel cameras, and satellite television
broadcast receivers. "Not all those things are going to be applicable
in a US market," Dayton said. The service will attempt to leverage the
growing availability of 3G networks with the increased ubiquity of
Wi-Fi hotspots. Dayton says that although handsets and service plans
won't be available until as late as the end of 2005, that generally
SK-Earthlink would focus on allowing its customers to make voice calls
from home Wi-Fi networks, Wi-Fi hotspots, and 3G cellular networks.
They would also leverage Wi-Fi alongside 3G in offering advanced data
and entertainment services, although he did not mention specifics. "We
think there's a big group of Internet savvy early adopter" consumers
in the US who want this but can't get it, he said. SK-Earthlink may
use Boingo's platform as the base on which they develop hotspot
relationships--Dayton will have an arm's length involvement in that
decision--but Boingo will certainly also continue to sell to other
carriers regardless. Other reports note that SK-Earthlink will use
CDMA technology, SK Telecom's flavor, which ties them closely in the
U.S. to Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS, the only two remaining CDMA
carriers here. Verizon has already deployed a significant portion of
their ambitious EVDO network offering speeds of hundreds of kilobits
per second, and Sprint PCS is committed to higher-speed offerings than
its current 1xRTT rate that compares to modem speeds. At the same
time, Verizon Wireless said recently that 3G will trump Wi-Fi, a
sentiment that baffles Dayton. "Wi-Fi is an unstoppable force," he
said. "It's like trying to deny there's a big elephant in the room."
Both technologies "are great individually, but if you put them
together" they allow the best connection wherever a user...

Cory Doctorow:
Earthlink has released a new file-sharing tool based on SIP, the
protocol underlying Voice Over IP and other systems for peer-to-peer
connectivity. What's coolest about this is the manifesto they posted
along with it:
EarthLink believes an open Internet is a good Internet. An open
Internet means users have full end-to-end connectivity to say to each
other whatever it is they say, be that voice, video, or other data
exchanges, without the help of mediating servers in the middle
whenever possible. We believe that if peer-to-peer flourishes, the
Internet flourishes. SIPshare helps spread the word that SIP is more
than a powerful voice over IP enabler --- much more. SIP is a protocol
that enables peer-to-peer in a standards-based way.

Earthlink Pitches Municipalities
Earthlink Pitches Municipalities
06/17/2005 03:19 PM EarthLink knows its dial-up market is eroding and DSL is competitive
as all heck: Building municipal networks for Philadelphia and others
may be part of the evolution of the company. The Wall Street Journal
reports that EarthLink has bid on Philadelphia's network as one of 12
firms; Verizon and Comcast decided not to. Esme Vos at
Muniwireless.com has the additional intelligence that EarthLink has
been negotiating with New York City to drop their pole fee in order to
bid on that potential city-wide network. The WSJ article has a Comcast
spokesperson ridiculing the idea of a lack of competition because
prices are falling. But that's not the only reasonable way to measure
it. Outside of some major cities, there are monopoly or duopoly DSL
and cable offerings. Even in those areas, competitors must pay for
access to DSL lines; cable companies have continued to fight any
wholesale resale requirement to their competitors. EarthLink will be
put in the position in Philadelphia, at least, of offering wholesale
access to the network on behalf of Philadelphia's non-profit that will
operate the network. This will make EarthLink a more beneficent (but
closely watched) partner to many companies that currently deny them
wholesale access to their own networks....

Earthlink Offering Not WiMax
Earthlink Offering Not WiMax
05/19/2004 06:12 AMEarthlink is no stranger to experimenting with alternative forms of
broadband. Last year they started experimenting with letting their
customers connect wirelessly over a 1xRTT network (the data network
Sprint and most of Verizon Wireless offer for dataspeeds that usually
are slightly better than dialup). Earlier this year they started
trials with broadband over powerlines, and now they're announcing that
they're
going
to offer wireless broadband in a few northern California cities -
offering speeds from 384 kilobits per second or up to 1 megabit per
second with pricing between $21.95 a month or $29.95 a month. Seems
like a pretty good deal, though, depending on the specific technology,
wireless broadband has had a spotty history so far. Of course, the
reporter on the article claims that this is WiMax - which is
impossible, since WiMax doesn't actually exist yet (it's amazing how
confused the press is about WiMax). In this case, the reporter
mistakenly believes that all wireless broadband is "WiMax" and it's
not a specific standard that still hasn't been approved. Either way,
it should be interesting to see how far these trials go, as most major
broadband providers haven't done much publicly concerning wireless
broadband offerings.
