Top Tip: Is a wireless network slower?
03/06/2004 02:03 AMI'm finally getting DSL :D and I'm curious as to whether I should hook
up a wireless network for it instead of a conventional wired network?
My dad has a new laptop with wireless capabilities and so he wants to
work with that, but my concern is that it will slow down the speed of
the DSL. Is wireless any slower than a wired network, and if it is, is
it enough to make a difference to internet performance?

Fear Of An Open Wireless Network
04/04/2005 06:22 AMAs mobile phones get
more and more sophisticated for handling data, more people are
waking up to reasons why the mobile data industry is still being held
back, compared to the regular internet. Once again, it's a story
about control. The mobile carriers
still think they
can control everything -- from the devices that people use to the
applications, services and connections offered via those phones. The
carriers will justify their position on each of these -- but people
already know what to expect in buying a regular computer and getting
on the regular internet -- and it doesn't involve having to buy a
specific computer that's made to work with your ISP which has some
special content and features, but which can't do everything that
someone else's computer can. The computer/internet world works
because it's not controlled by one party -- and the faster the
carriers realize this, the faster they'll get wireless data adoption.

Sweden to Get Broadband Wireless Network
08/27/2004 01:31 PMUsing EU funds, TeliaSonera will help build a broadband wireless
network in a region of Sweden that is without broadband access: The
network will be built with so-called "pre-WiMax" equipment, or gear
that hasn't been certified WiMax but may receive certification once
that process begins. This is precisely the type of network that many
experts say WiMax is ideal for--covering remote areas that aren't
served by wired broadband. Ultimately, such networks could be built in
developing nations but initially the networks and products may not be
inexpensive enough to serve such markets....

Outdoor Fire Detectors
Outdoor Fire Detectors
04/16/2005 10:10 AMDeadwood goes high-tech to control fires: Deadwood is as close to a tourist
mecca as you're going to get in South Dakota (not counting that
mountain with the funny designs carved in it, of course). Anything
that disrupts tourism out there is a huge, huge problem for the
regional economy.
The FireAlert-DC units, made by Ambient, are about 6 inches around,
20 inches high and sit on top of 12-foot poles. A sensor scans the
full horizon every two minutes. When it detects a growing fire, the
unit sends a signal to a satellite, which relays the information to
the company's dispatch center. It also calls the local 911 dispatcher
and fire department.

Sputnik launches new Linux-based
indoor/outdoor AP for only $250!
04/09/2004 09:17 PMMy friends over at
Sputnik just
launched a new, indoor/outdoor AP, the
Sputnik AP
200. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night shall stay
these rugged, high-powered APs from distributing Wi-Fi for a distance
of miles, with optional external antenna, of course.
The specs
rock:
- 200 mW transmit antenna
- environmentally
sealed and tested in temperatures ranging from -4° F to 158°
F
- works with a variety of directional and omni-directional
antennas (Sputnik sells a bunch)
- supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), so you can deploy them
anywhere
- uses transmit power control, so you can reduce
interference and increase bandwidth
- plug-n-play provisioning,
making it a snap to grow your network
- WDS repeater range of
over 3 miles
Of course, the real magic is in the Sputnik Control
Center software (disclaimer, I had something to do with developing
it...) that lets you authenticate and track users centrally, and
build a managed wireless network from the ground up just by plugging
APs into broadband.
Best news of all: this baby is only $250. You can start a hotzone for as little as $595, which is
the special price for a Sputnik AP 200, a Sputnik AP 160 and
corresponding Sputnik Central Control license.
Great work,
guys!
