Good stuff and bad stuff

Good stuff and bad stuff 02/12/2004 07:25 PM
The bad stuff first: The wireless connection here sucks. It sucks less today than previously, but it is still bad. The other thing is that there are far too few power strips available, and I've on several occasions had my laptop die on me.

But the cool stuff just continues: Programmable matter and quantum dots by Wil McCarthy just blew me (and probably everyone else) away with the visions of windows that move according to sunlight, wires that grow inside the walls as needed, walls that can produce any sort of light at command, quantum wells and artifical atoms, but especially the palm-sized, paper-thin über-PDA, which does *everything*, including cooling your drinks. And it all works on "ambient energy" - harvesting stray photons, sound and movement. When any physical object can have any functionality you desire, you get into some pretty interesting scenarios...

High sci-fi, mindblowing stuff - but the theory says it should work.

eBay my ride

eBay my ride 06/05/2005 10:50 PM

It's not entirely surprising to see cars from the show Pimp My Ride being sold on eBay for cash. I think this newest one makes it five or six of the featured cars that have been sold.

The show's premise is kind of flimsy: kids in SoCal in rough situations get a crazy $30k car makeover that is supposed to change their life for the better. Speaking as someone that once owned a highly customized car in Southern California, they're more trouble than they're worth, making you constantly worried about them getting stolen or broken into.

When you hear about the kids on the show, it's most often money problems, and having a playstation in your dash doesn't quite solve that, though they frequently point to improving these kids' self-esteem as some sort of benefit making the show worth it. So many end up on eBay, which will probably help these people out, so I guess the ends justify the means and we get some entertaining television out of it.

It's all detailed in an article on MujMAC, a Czech Mac news Web site.

The long bike ride

The long bike ride 08/03/2004 02:44 PM
The Long Bike Ride is a cross-country charity ride (which is short of its goal, kick in a few bucks) by two guys that have never ridden a bike more than 15 miles in one sitting. They're already halfway done, having ridden 50-75 miles everyday for the past couple months, probably thanks to riding high-end ultralight recumbent bikes. Their tour updates are extensive and looking at the photos they look quite relaxed. Then I realized if you're getting your 50-75 miles done in about 4 hours, the rest of the time you can just party! party! party! Still, a pretty amazing feat to do this entire route, especially considering their lack of experience and training.

Dishing Song's In-Flight DISH Network

"Gizmodo reader Aaron Feibus shares his experiences with Song's in-flight TV system:

'I took a red-eye flight from LA to Orlando last night on Song on a Boeing 757. Although I'd flown them before, this was the first time they had their long-promised TV system installed in the seats. The channel selection is pretty good and provided by the Dish Network, but there's more to than just television.

The screens are touch sensitive allowing you to choose from regular stations, pay-per-view movies, a GPS map of your flight, or my favorite 'Music Trivia.' Music trivia is set up exactly like the trivia games that are so popular at bars. A question appears and immediately the score for the correct answer starts to drop 50 points at a time. After each question, it shows the rankings of all players logged in, their name, and what seat they are sitting in." [Gizmodo]
