Hitachi Unveils New Hard Drive Plans

Hitachi Deskstar 7K500: First 500GB
Drive
03/31/2005 03:41 PM
Hitachi's Deskstar 7K500 offers two flaps of firsts, being
not only the first to hit half a terabyte in a single drive, but one
of the very first to use the SATA II interface—that means more
data at faster speeds. If you don't have an SATA II interface in your
PC, though, Hitachi will be offering a $500 version with an 8MB buffer
and a parallel ATA interface (the long, flat, ribbon cable kind). If
you want the SATA II offering, it's just 20 bucks more—plus you
get a bigger 16MB cache.
Not exactly a great value, but the biggest sizes never are. Also,
probably not actually available in yellow.

Drives for Phones
07/30/2004 11:03 PM
We
been hearing rumblings about hard drives being put into cellular
phones for a while now (we've certainly advocated it), but now a
company called "Hoya Corp" revealed in a quarterly earnings statement
that two major hard drive players - Hitachi Global Storage
Technologies and Seagate - are planning on developing 1" hard drives
for cellular phones. I sincerely hope that the hard drives are
technically incapable of storing ringtones, because I can't imagine
what life would be like if people could fit about 10,000 of the damn
things in one device. I mean, really; 10,000 songs in your pocket? Who
would want that?

01/26/2004 03:03 PMI have this hard drive that cannot be reformatted. Whenever
reformatting is taking place the hard disk reader head stops reading
after certain sectors. When the "dir" command is used to view the
disk, the files are shown but not the total about of bytes used up or
free. The cursor seems to stop before this infomation is shown. Could
it be that the FAT table has been damaged.
