Vodafone Trialing Flarion Wireless
Broadband Solution In Tokyo

Vodafone Trialing Flarion Wireless
Broadband Solution In Tokyo
05/06/2004 02:28 PM
Flarion has been getting a lot of attention for snagging Nextel as a customer for their technology to offer high speed wireless broadband in North Carolina. Even though Nextel says they're still looking at other technologies for wireless broadband, Flarion has to feel good about the situation. Now, they're getting another, very high profile test, as Vodafone (immediately after announcing their own 3G service) say they'll be testing Flarion's technology in Tokyo. In case you haven't been following this, Flarion's FLASH-OFDM technology allows for wireless broadband that supposedly offers 1.5Mbps downstream rates - much faster than all the 3G offerings that people keep talking about. Of course, 3G has other purposes, as it's designed to be useful for both voice and data, while Flarion's technology is just for data. Still, as the article points out, we're getting closer to a day when there's really no reason to distinguish between voice and data - and the fact that it's wireless carriers who are testing Flarion suggests that they realize this. Of course, the wireless broadband market is still quite young, and while it's good to see trials of Flarion's technology, they are still competing with technology from IP Wireless (who has a few systems up and running themselves) and the huge ball of hype that is WiMax - not to mention all the 3G rollouts (though, those should pale in comparison on speed for the time being). For all the hype around WiMax, it's these other technologies that are actually in place today. No matter what, real wireless broadband is coming, and it looks like the market will have a few different choices.

T-Mobile GPRS on OS X

T-Mobile GPRS on OS X 12/04/2003 10:48 PM
I got T-Mobile to enable GPRS ("T-Mobile Internet") on my phone the other day. It works alright with the t68i and the PowerBook. I used Ross Barkman's "modem scripts". With the right script with the magic "use GPRS" commands I just had to choose the correct "CID" and enter "internet2.voicestream.com" as the phone number. I also setup a "Data account" on the phone; I'm not sure I actually needed to do that. A few odd things: The T68i (or OS...

Email/GPRS Problems with the T-Mobile HP
h6315

ipaq_6315_rumor.jpg imageSo it's not all roses for T-Mobile and HP's new iPaq h6315 Pocket PC phone. According to users on various forums who purchased the recently-released device, using the built-in GPRS connection to send email over 4k in size can cause a disconnection (and subsequent failure). Others are reporting issues connecting to other internet services over GPRS connection (and even Wi-Fi, although I think that's just a random issue). T-Mobile has acknowledged the issue (not publically, but to users reporting in the forums), and word has it there is a problem in the h6315 GPRS TCP/IP stack.

That should be fixable via software patch, which hopefully will hit the web soon.

Dell Offers Unlimited GPRS with New Card
and T-Mobile
11/10/2003 10:53 PM
Dell's new card for tri-mode GPRS is $99, but it allows unlimited GPRS use on T-Mobile's network for $30 per month: The card works on Dell Latitude and Inspiron notebooks, and you can subscribe to either AT&T Wireless or T-Mobile for service. However, AT&T's plan starts at $30 per month for 10 Mb, while T-Mobile's offering is $30 per month for unlimited usage or $50 per month for unlimited GPRS and hotspot use on T-Mobile's network. Here's an important note, however: the unlimited GPRS for no additional fee does require activation and a one-year commitment, but it also only includes T-Mobile's GPRS network. How extensive that network is, I'm not sure, but the question is whether or not you're informed when you're roaming and using GPRS: can you just not connect or are you charged some enormous rate without knowing about?...

sonyvodafone.jpg imagePocket-Lint brings to our attention the F500i camera phone, the first Sony Ericsson phone on the Vodafone UK network. What it does, you see, is take VGA-quality digital photographs and then, while this might be shocking to those unprepared, also allows you to make a telephone call over the airwaves using a tiny, integrated "cellular" radio. Yes, folks, it's a camera, but also a phone! Oh. You've ... seen ... ah.

Well, it has a tiny 3D chip and games! Did you know that? Ah ha! As I thought.
