RUMOR: Apple office software seems
likely
01/05/2005 02:07 PM

A small Macintosh software developer has renamed an application it had been calling iWork, lending credence to rumors that Apple plans to introduce office software of the same name.

IGG Software, which has marketed a time-billing application as iWork, has changed the program's name to iBiz. The change, which is reflected on the company's Web site, follows reports on rumor sites that Apple plans to offer its own suite of word processing and presentation software.

Enthusiast site ThinkSecret reported last week that a product from Apple called iWork would include an updated version of Apple's presentation software, Keynote, and a new word processing program, which the site says will be called Pages. The site predicted Apple would unveil the product at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Such a program would be an interesting move for Apple, which has for years kept its office software ambitions limited, counting instead on Microsoft to produce a Mac version of Microsoft Office.

With all the pre-Expo rumoring I felt it necessary to preface this by saying it comes directly from an Apple press release: Apple today upgraded its Xserve 1U rack optimized server to deliver dual 64-bit 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5 processors with over 35 gigaflops of processing power per system and the industry's fastest front side 1U server system bus, running at up to 1.15 GHz, providing up to 9.2 GBps of bandwidth per processor and up to three 400GB drives, achieving a groundbreaking 1.2TB of hot-plug storage. Apple Slaps Rumor Site With Lawsuit

Apple Slaps Rumor Site With Lawsuit 01/06/2005 01:50 AM

Rumor site AppleInsider got hit with a lawsuit Wednesday, in the wake of two articles leaking information on what is to be release d in the Macworld Expo next week.

The suit, filed Tuesday in the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, Calif., aims to identify who is leaking the information and to get an injunction preventing further release of trade secrets. However, in filing the suit, Apple identifies specific articles that contain trade secrets, indicating that at least parts of those reports are on the mark.

Two ways to look at this, I guess; one, that the rumors reported on AI are dead on, and Apple is wanting to keep its secrets secret. Or two, (thanks to a Gadgetopia reader/poster) is that the rumors are not true, but Apple is trying to keep the rumors from raising the public's expectations for upcoming releases, which ends up hurting Apple's stock prices.

Me? I think that Apple has some hot stuff planned for the Expo, and the headless iMac is part of it. Why else would they announce a newer/faster/no-more-expensive Xserve the week before?

I sure wouldn't want to be the guy at Apple leaking this stuff. And maybe I'll think a little harder about posting the next Apple rumor I hear about.

IBM To Offer Web-Based Office Software

IBM To Offer Web-Based Office Software 05/10/2004 04:31 AM
Microsoft's Office productivity suite is facing increasing competition from folks like StarOffice and it's open source cousin OpenOffice. There have been a few other small startups like SimDesk that have won a few big deals. Now, IBM is ready to jump into the market with a web-based office productivity suite. It includes an email client, a word processor, a spread-sheet and a personal database offering. What's interesting is that they try to go beyond just being Office clones by the combination online/offline system. The software will work offline as a typical client desktop application, but will also synchronize with a server whenever online - so you get automatic backups and access from multiple machines. They're also trying to price it cheaply: $2/user per month - but you also need to buy the server software. It would be smart (and perhaps they, or a partner are doing this) to also offer a hosted version for smaller businesses or individual users, so that they don't have to set up and maintain the server software themselves. This, obviously, fits in with IBM's push to make computing more of a utility offering where IBM just hosts everything and people buy the services and processing power they need.

The selection committee, it is apparent, has a flair for the dramatic. They knew that an Apple versus Microsoft tilt would be great television. Heck, if I weren't part of it, I'd tune in. Let's dispense with the elephant in the room: If we are at Round 3 in the Apple/Microsoft tilt, you would have to be hopelessly partisan not to recognize that Microsoft absolutely slaughtered Apple in the first, with Apple making excellent tactical maneuvers in the second so that the biggest question is no longer whether Microsoft will destroy it. The difference between the second round and the first was that Apple chose to quit punching itself. Apple is the prospector, the trailblazer, and yes, perhaps even a Rule Breaker. Microsoft is the Borg. Apple's technology tends to work extremely well and is intuitive. Microsoft's works with everything, eventually. Microsoft will never, ever, ever come up with a piece of functional engineering as breathtakingly beautiful as the iMac. Still, Apple lost the operating system war. So it went elsewhere.

Usability Time! When Microsoft AntiSpyware is running it displays this dialog:

Dialog box from Microsoft AntiSpyware, containing the
text 'Detected Spyware on your system:'

... which looks, to me, like it's telling me that it detected spyware on my system.

Oh, wait! No, that's not it, it's just a lazy programmer who wrote this code:

10 PRINT "DETECTED SPYWARE ON YOUR SYSTEM:"
20 FOR I = 1 TO 1000000000
30 IF SPYWARE(I) THEN PRINT FILENAME(I)
40 NEXT I

I think I get it. It's the heading for a list which has not arrived yet because you're still busy scanning my harddrive searching for spyware which I don't have. The usual programmer mentality ("it's just a list with 0 elements, what's so hard to understand about that?"). Hey guys, next time don't use a message that's only one pixel away from telling me the exact wrong fact about whether or not there's spyware on my system.

So far, it looks like this is a nifty program, and consumers should be happy that Microsoft has announced it will be free, but it really, really would have been nice for us here in the software industry if Microsoft had set a price on this thing just to provide some air cover for the other companies working on spyware removal. This is not a software category where a monopoly monoculture will be a good thing.

Not only that, but I wonder if Microsoft can run an antispyware product without huge conflicts of interest. For example, will they block all the spyware that Real installs on your system? While Real is suing them? Especially when blocking spyware from Real will just give Real more ammunition to use against Microsoft in court? And the next time Microsoft needs a DRM favor from your friendly neighborhood media conglomerate, will the media conglomerate demand exemption from Antispyware removal for their adware in exchange for supporting Windows Media 37.0, with the new brain-zapping feature that prevents you from humming any song unless you bought the performance rights? (A sheet of tinfoil wrapped tightly around your skull is effective against this zapper, I understand.)

I understand that Microsoft wants to help customers who feel like a spyware-free operating system should be your right when you pay for WinXP, but it's a shame that by giving it away free they're likely to wipe out a useful industry and replace it with something that's difficult to trust due to conflicts of interest.

It's time for a server upgrade. For two years a single server has hosted the bulk of our sites, including Joel on Software, although a second smaller server has made an appearance. Over the next few weeks there will be a massive upgrade, giving us six top of the line, state of the art servers at the Peer 1 colo downtown.

In the past I would have upgraded the system, installed it all, and written an article about it. And then people would have emailed me to suggest better ways to do things, but it would be too late.

So now for the first time ever, I'm going to publish a "live" article here. So far, I haven't done anything. If you have any better suggestions for how to do things, it's not too late for me to learn from your experience. As we go along, I might have a few questions for my readers who have experience with this stuff.
