Google News beta

Google News beta

Google News beta 09/24/2002 05:08 AM

Google News presents information culled from approximately 4,000 news sources worldwide and automatically arranged to present the most relevant news first. Topics are updated continuously throughout the day, so you will see new stories each time you check the page. Google has developed an automated grouping process for Google News that pulls together related headlines and photos from thousands of sources worldwide -- enabling you to see how different news organizations are reporting the same story. You pick the item that interests you, then go directly to the site which published the account you wish to read.

Google News is highly unusual in that it offers a news service compiled solely by computer algorithms without human intervention. Google employs no editors, managing editors, or executive editors. While the sources of the news vary in perspective and editorial approach, their selection for inclusion is done without regard to political viewpoint or ideology. While this may lead to some occasionally unusual and contradictory groupings, it is exactly this variety that makes Google News a valuable source of information on the important issues of the day.

You can trace the history of a developing issue by clicking the "sort by date" function on the page containing all reports on a given topic. This will arrange the stories in chronological order, with the most recent report placed first.

Why Doesn't Google Ever Move Anything

Why Doesn't Google Ever Move Anything
Out Of "Beta?"
04/03/2005 03:45 AM
Dave, this is a simple question, but profound: how come almost every new tool that Google releases stays in “beta” forever? This is a fascinating question and one that I’ve wondered too, as I’ve watched Orkut come and go in the public eye, Gmail shake up the entire world of free Web-based e-mail, Google News get slapped with a lawsuit for misappropriation of intellectual property, Google Catalog Search, and Froogle gain surprisingly little visibility, and…

"Google Local" Goes beta

"Google Local" Goes beta 02/05/2005 10:16 PM

Google has taken live on its homepage a new service for locating local businesses, which scours millions of Web pages and crosschecks the results with the Yellow Pages data. Google LoLocal_res_logo2cal was previously part of the company's Google Labs development sandbox, but has now been deemed ready for widespread use.

One example cited by Google is using the service to find an auto parts store within walking distance. Google Local shows results on an area map, and can limit results to a specific distance from a user's starting point. For frequent local searchers, Google remembers the location in which to look.  Although the service currently only works in the United States and Canada, Google plans to expand its reach in due time. The company also expects to provide a way for businesses to add themselves.

Panasonic R3 Review

Panasonic R3 Review 08/03/2004 10:50 AM

panasonic_r3_review1.jpg image

One of the great things working at Gizmodo has allowed me to do is to get my hands on a whole range of gadgetry that I probably wouldn't have been able to play around with otherwise. Since I work from home, each ring of the doorbell means there's probably something new coming, so it's a little like Christmas, except when I return the gifts nobody gets pissy. But despite the joy of opening up all the gadgets and trying them out, most of them -- especially the laptops -- end up being disappointing, and I'm rarely too upset to send them back to the vendor and manufacturer.

Not so with the Panasonic R3, a machine so well put-together that I actually considered buying one for my own personal use, and if it didn't cost twice that of my budget (importers are selling it for around $2800 for a fully-spec'd out unit), I probably would have. What makes the R3 the hands-down best sub-notebook I've ever used? Well, for starters, it actually usable.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC50-S Review 06/09/2004 09:10 AM

Panasonic electronics surrounding a Leica lens produces the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LC50-S, an entry-level camera designed to help push Panasonic into a market it has previously left to Sony and the traditional camera companies. TrustedReviews takes the 3.2-megapixel/3x optical zoom camera out for a bit, and finds it decent, but definitely a budget model, with a plastic body, no rechargeable battery, and quite a bit of noise in the pictures. It's not bad, but probably not recommended, with better options from Canon and Sony for around the same price (~$200).

English-speaking immigrants
08/22/2004 07:30 AM
Cory Doctorow: Immigrants to the UK from English-speaking countries such as Canada and Australia must pass an English proficiency test in order to gain UK citizenship. The test is apparently very stringent:
According to one report two Australians, including a knight who has lived in Britain for 44 years and a writer with a degree in English, have been rejected under the new rules.

When you need to modify trustee rights

When you need to modify trustee rights 07/26/2004 12:38 PM
Back in the days of NetWare 3, I used two utilities - GRANT and REVOKE - to control file trustee rights over the short term. Actually, I used one of John Baird's utilities (link below) to create a list of trustee rights for files and folders and used that list with REVOKE when I wanted to keep people out so I could do a backup of a database, for example. I then would re-apply the rights using the list and GRANT.
