XenoFreaks has a new version of their PIX LED light
available, called the 'PIX sports,' designed to be more than just a
simple display. The smaller PIX sports can function as a stopwatch,
timer, and a motion-sensitive counter, as well as display a variety of
flashing patterns and messages. Plus it has what looks to be a fairly
sturdy clip on the back, so you can just snap it to your clothing and
go. The best part is that—unlike its $100 PIX cousin—the
PIX sports is affordable, at around $25. The worst part is that it
doesn't look like their web site supports orders outside of Korea.

Sports and the War on (Some) Drugs
Sports and the War on (Some) Drugs
05/27/2004 09:35 AMIn this remarkable story, the Mercury
News shows how laboratories helped turn athletes into record-beaters.
It's more fuel on the fire in a movement to keep athletes from using
performance-enhancing drugs of any kind.
The whole scandal reeks of hypocrisy, at every level. Sports is big
money, and people will do just about anything to get some of it.
The public doesn't really care about athletes who do outrageous things
to build their bodies; if the public really cared then the average
lineman in pro football wouldn't weigh more than 300 pounds. We want
our entertainment. We will get it.
The sports establishment -- the franchise owners and the leaders of
national and international associations -- are worse. They're hungry
for power and television fees, and not much else.
The war on (some) drugs has always been the most hypocritical of all.
I use a performance-enhancing drug every morning. It's called
caffeine, and it's in my coffee. Uh, oh, call the morality police,
right? Too much caffeine, like too much steroids, could do severe
harm. Yet somehow I'm able to moderate my intake.
I'm in the middle of a fascinating short book just published by the Independent Institute, a
right-to-libertarian think tank. It's called "Drug War
Crimes: The Consequences of Prohibition" -- and it's an indictment
of the war itself. I'll tell you more about the book in a follow-up
posting soon, but the bottom line is that the negative costs of the
drug war are undoubtedly higher than we'd pay if we did the smart
thing and legalized drugs and treated abusers for health problems, not
as criminals.

02/10/2004 02:55 AMReading this Salon article on sports video games brought back a ton of
memories from college. I never got into Madden properly, but I played
a ton of Tecmo Bowl, Tecmo Super Bowl, and NHL '94, the latter of
which is, in my estimation, the best sports video game of all time
(with which Stewart would agree, I'm sure). A quote from the article:

Sports Mascots Agonistes
Sports Mascots Agonistes
03/15/2003 11:04 AM The dark side
of being a sports mascot. Assault and battery by opposing coaches
and fans. Having to do acrobatics in foul-smelling costumes in

accidental death and dismemberment insurance," [NBA mascot Kirk]
Johnson said with a laugh. "You never know what's going to
happen." Behind that frolicsome giant stuffed animal lies a bleak
world of terror and pain. [no more inside, wasn't that enough?]

Automatic sports highlights
Automatic sports highlights
07/04/2004 03:47 PMResearchers have devised software that churns through sports video and
automatically grabs the highlights. A New Scientist article describes
several of these projects--from snooker analysis at Trinity College to
soccer game scanning at the University of Florence. Computer vision
problems are notoriously difficult, but, according to the article, "as
sports follow fixed rules, and take place in predictable locations,
computers ought to be able to pick out the key pieces of play and
string them together."

Last year in Lab Notes, I wrote about a similar project at UC
Berkeley. Computer scientists there are using soccer and ballet video
footage to demonstrate machine vision software that recognizes humans
and their activities.
