Wi-Fi and Cancer

Wi-Fi and Cancer 12/12/2003 03:12 PM
This balanced and thoughtful article takes a look at the Illinois lawsuit urging a public school district to shut down its WLANs: The article points out that it's tough to decide right now if Wi-Fi might cause adverse health affects given that research has been done with opposing results and because people haven't been exposed to cellular or Wi-Fi radiation long enough to make a definitive conclusion. I happen to be working on a story about the Illinois lawsuit and just heard from the lawyer representing the parents who have filed suit against the school district and he said that the parties are in settlement discussions. He couldn't offer any details, of course. I'd like to speculate on what agreement the parties might make but it's hard to imagine. The school might bend and remove the network in an effort to avoid a costly lawsuit. Otherwise, I can't imagine a way that the school could offer the network and offer a way for students to avoid it while receiving the same education as their peers. We shall see....

Do cellphones cause cancer?

Do cellphones cause cancer? 11/18/2003 03:18 PM
The jury is still out on whether or not cellphones cause brain cancer, but let's just say that the latest research indicates that it's not looking so good. Unfortunately, Federally-funded research that might be able to give us a conclusive answer to all this isn't expected to be completed until 2011. Just in time for the massive epidemic of brain cancer that's predicted. Read [Via WiFi Networking News]...

Sun, Cancer, and Corruption

Sun, Cancer, and Corruption 06/05/2005 11:19 PM

At myway, a nicely-minimal news-aggregation site, I read Scienti sts Say Sunshine May Prevent Cancer, which is interesting for two reasons. As the parent of a kid who never goes outside un-greased, and with sun-related skin problems in the family, I care about this whole issue of the pros and cons of sunshine. But a few paragraphs in, the science-for-sale dimension starts screaming out from between the lines. It turns out that the research from the some of the people talking up the benefits of moderate sunshine is funded by the Indoor Tanning Association, while on the other side the Sun Safety Alliance (funded in part by Coppertone) is backing the research of the all-sun-is-bad party. Is there anything left that’s not for sale?

Comic: Cancer Vixen

Comic: Cancer Vixen 04/13/2005 10:49 PM
Xeni Jardin: Today's New York Times has a great profile of Marisa Acocella Marchetto, the New York-based illustrator who chronicled her battle with cancer in a comic strip called "Cancer Vixen" which you can see in the current issue of Glamour.

In the cartoon version of her life, Cancer Vixen attends a fund-raiser for a breast cancer book and spots a woman who has covered her smooth pate with a chic silk scarf. "How stylish is that Pucci headwrap," she comments to a friend. "Maybe I should've gotten the heavier chemo."

Her friend warns her not to joke about such things. Moments later, two women with closely cropped hair accost Cancer Vixen, wondering why she still has long blond tresses.

"I-I-I did the lighter chemo," a shrinking Cancer Vixen stammers. "Change your doctor! Change your protocol!" one woman screams in response. "You have to be aggressive and bomb the hell out of your body. ...I did," the other adds.

"Some of the moments were not funny when they were actually happening to me," Mrs. Marchetto recalled. "But my mom would be, like, 'Material, material!' "
