Microsoft offering free OS for 'cold'
servers
06/04/2004 10:38 AM
In what could be a sign of things to come, Microsoft Corp. is offering a small sweetener to its Software Assurance licensing program. From this week the company will allow servers used for disaster recovery to carry copies of its Windows server software at no extra cost. A key condition is that the server must be used only for disaster recovery. Microsoft defines such servers as "cold servers", i.e. ones turned off until a disaster arises. The "cold server" provision will be applicable for the remaining term of any two- or three-year Software Assurance contract and is not perpetual.

Online

It appears that it's not only musicians recognizing the power of free publicity from putting their content for free online. While this article ignores the success of more recent authors to release books online (Cory Doctorow, Lawrence Lessig, etc...) in conjunction with their hardcopy release (as well as a number of authors now experimenting with releasing chapters of their books in progress), it appears that a more mainstream novelist, Matthew Reilly, is now releasing his latest novel online for free. He's releasing it in sections, rather than as a single download, but his theory is that it will help get him a bigger audience from readers who previously didn't know about him, or who were unlikely to find his books in bookstores. He hopes that it will encourage people to go out and buy his other books (this is his sixth book, and some of his earlier novels were apparently "best sellers"). Also, his publishing company will publish a hardcopy of this book later this year, after it's already completely free online. Apparently, the idea was entirely his, but his publishing company thinks it's a great idea - though, it may have helped that Reilly sold them the publishing rights for a $1 to get rid of the risk. It doesn't seem like my usual reading material, but if you're interested in what he describes as a "Tom Clancy-Michael Crichton" hybrid, you can download the first two sections of his book at the Hover Car Racer website.

Portland Airport Gets Free Wi-Fi

Portland Airport Gets Free Wi-Fi 07/28/2004 09:53 PM
Nigel Ballard of Personal Telco reports that Portland International Airport will have free Wi-Fi: Ballard told an audience at a meeting of the community wireless group this evening that the Port of Portland will turn on 25 access points by Oct. 1 to offer free service at gates and check-in areas. They're committed to covering the cost of operation for the first year, and then re-evaluating whether fees would be added. Ballard is part of the Portland Telecommunications Steering Committee, and an active community networker and commercial infrastructure builder....

Saunalahti is offering a free weblog to all its GSM subscribers. You can update your weblog using MMS messages, Nokia Lifeblog or internet.

SaunaBlog. I like that name.

However, they seem to have lifted the entire description of what a blog is directly from Wikipedia without attribution, which, as far as I can tell, is a GNU FDL violation. Wikipedia.fi has more.

Also, looking at a sample blog, it seems that they are claiming copyright on anything that anyone writes on their own blog, and apparently they're not making you even agree on a license before you use the service. This is simply wrong - you simply cannot assert copyright on something that you don't own. If you write a blog, you own its content - regardless of who hosts it.

Saunalahti seems to be pretty lax about copyright issues. This will bite them in the ankle, I'm sure.

Offering Internet In Public Places:
Patented

Offering Internet In Public Places:
Patented
09/21/2004 12:29 PM
Just as more people are finally realizing the potential for a "pate nt apocalypse" if our patent system isn't fixed soon, we have yet another example of idiotic patents getting in the way of actual business. Wayport, the company that has offered both wired and wireless internet access in hotels, airports and random other places (such as McDonald's) for years has now been hit with a patent lawsuit from a tiny company in New Hampshire, called PowerOasis, that claims they've just received a patent on offering internet access in public places -- because, obviously, no one had ever thought of that idea before this company came along and patented it. Exactly which patents they're suing over isn't entirely clear. The company claims 2 patents in the space, but a search of the USPTO finds 3 patents in the company's name, all for a "Power and telecommunications access vending machine." No matter which patents are the ones they're suing over, the company's statements help demonstrate how bad our patent system has become: "Wayport has deprived PowerOasis of the ability to sell and expand its services in airports and other locations, including hotels, to an extent that cannot be calculated but that has severely hampered PowerOasis in its effort to expand its businesses." Read that a second time. Basically, PowerOasis is admitting that Wayport has a better sales and marketing force. No one at Wayport deprived PowerOasis of anything. They just beat them in the market. Too many patent holders these days seem to think that a patent (no matter how ridiculous it may be) entitles them to simply have the market, rather than still having to go out and win the market with a good product, backed up by a good sales and marketing team.
