BANGALORE, INDIA - Voice over IP (VOIP) and open source technology hold great promise for cost savings, but also threaten traditional ways of doing business. Rather than shy away from the challenges that these disruptive technologies represent, Bell Laboratories, the renowned R&D (research and development) arm of Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill, New Jersey, is attempting to bring them into the mainstream.

Open source software is everywhere nowadays -- even in the cautious offices of political campaigns. During last year's U.S. presidential campaign, a staff speechwriter from the Howard Dean campaign begged for Linux on his laptop, according to Zack Rosen, a DeanSpace Web developer, technical volunteer coordinator and Web radio producer. Rosen says that the Dean campaign's general manager Joe Trippi was "the first to have authority to start talking meaningfully about the concept of 'open source politics.'" Rosen and other Dean and Wesley Clark campaign alums have staked the future of their new project, CivicSpace Labs, on the idea that open source and politics can co-exist in "bottom-up people-powered campaigns."

Open Source VoIP

Open Source VoIP 04/11/2004 04:13 AM

This is the third Ted inspired post.....

Schtoom is a open source VoIP project in Python.  This could be huge!

Shtoom

Vercotti: (Michael Palin) Well, I had been running a successful escort agency - high class, no really, high class girls... we didn't have any of that . That was right out. And I decided. (phone rings on desk) Excuse me. (he answers it) Hello... no, not now... shtoom... shtoom... right... yes we'll have the watch ready for you at midnight... the watch... the Chinese watch... yes, right oh, bye bye... Mother.

Shtoom is a open-source, cross-platform VoIP softphone, implemented in Python. As well as the basic phone, the package also includes a number of other applications -

  • shtoom - the end-user phone
  • shtam - a simple answering machine/voicemail application
  • shmessage - an announcement server

Shtoom should work on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. It ships with user interfaces for Qt/KDE, Gtk/GNOME, Tk and a command line. There will hopefully be native user interfaces for Windows and the Mac soon, until then, the Tk interface works on those platforms.

Shtoom has audio support on Linux using OSS or ALSA, and on all other platforms using the PortAudio library. Native sound drivers for Mac/Windows are planned (the Mac interface should be done soon -- volunteers to help with an interface from Python to Windows DirectSound libraries are more than welcome!)

Shtoom requires Python 2.3.3 and Twisted 1.1.1 or greater.

Availability:

Shtoom 0.2 is now available. You can get it from the Sourceforge Fil es page. Or, for the brave, you can get source via subversion. Anonymous checkouts should get svn://divmod.org/svn/S htoom/trunk/shtoom, while folks with developer access should use svn+ssh://divmod.o rg/svn/Shtoom/trunk/shtoom.

My March 21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition because, on the same day, a new events database called EVDB was announced and shown at PC Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...

IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).
