Sayre: "Six Apart's recent acquisition
of LiveJournal means goodness for Atom format and protocol clients.
Together with Blogger, this should push things to critical mass."
True.
Oh, and I forgot to mention Atom Protocol support in my list of
possible post-1.0 Roller features (it is almost complete now, BTW).

Tonight (or
tomorrow night, ymmv) marks the 2nd Annual
Ride of Silence, a
solemn testament to those that have been injured or killed while
biking on the roads. Begun last year in Dallas in tribute to local
ultramarathoner
Larry Schwartz, it began
as a one-time tribute. Apparently, there was enough National interest
to make this an annual event, and this year
more than 50
cities in the U.S. and Canada are participating.

A critical mass of photograph

03/06/2004 01:55 AMEveryone at ETCon had a Mac. Or at least pretty much everyone at
ETCon had a Mac. And pretty much everyone was using the wifi network
in the conference rooms. And - much like last time - loads of people
were using Rendezvous to instant message each other in iChat as well as to collaborate
on documents using SubEthaEdit. Also
this year, everyone was taking photos with their digital cameras. But
one thing surprised me - no one was sharing their albums via iPhoto. When I was in Los
Angeles I'd bought iLife
because I wanted to play with Garageband, but when I
started playing with the various applications I quickly realised that
iPhoto's rendezvous sharing could be really really interesting and
cool in an environment like ETCon. I kept thinking that there would be
a whole culture in photo swapping and distributing snaps of speakers,
nicking pictures of yourself from other people's computers, finding
ways to annotate your own personal experience of the conference with
the distributed materials of a few hundred attendees. But there was no
such culture there.
There may be any number of reasons why it didn't take off in that
environment, of course. One possibility is that people feel different
about photos than they do with playlists and music - more
proprietorial, more nervous of sharing. Or there might have just been
problems with the network. But I can't help feeling that it's a direct
consequence of Apple charging for this particular update - and that
the critical mass of people that you'd need to make an active
subculture around that stuff will now not be reached...

The Digital Den? Not This Year...
08/19/2004 12:49 PMEvery year, there's something new that's being overhyped for the
holiday shopping season. This time, it appears that many companies
are hoping that this is the year that
convergence products make "the digital den" a
success. The only problem is that no one told the people who buy
this stuff. Most people still don't know anything about the idea of
setting up a home digital hub, and, frankly, they're scared that it
would be too complicated. This is the type of product that really
needs to sneak its way into the home via digital video recorders --
which appears to be the exact strategy that
TiVo is taking. However, considering how confused many people
were by the original idea of TiVo, any marketing campaign that adds
the digital hub component is going to have to be very carefully
designed, or it's only going to confuse people even more.

ica's Digital Home taking shape?
Consumers associate Microsoft (54%) and Sony (52%) as key players
in delivering the "Digital Den" (PR-speak for digital home)
experience. However, when asked their preferred brand for the home
media hub, Sony (21%) emerges as number one, followed by Dell (15%),
Microsoft (13%), and HP (9%).
"What's interesting is that once you get past the Sony and
Microsoft halos, it’s the PC companies like Dell (46%) and HP (41%)
that consumers will look to for media hub products and services, more
so than well-entrenched electronics companies like Panasonic (34%) and
Samsung (20%)," said [Todd Board, Senior Vice President and head of
Ipsos-Insight's Technology & Communications practice]. "Pipeline
companies, like the telcos, cable companies, and Internet companies,
are not far behind as the preference for 9% of consumers (aggregate)."

2) Moto
rola's Quest For Digital Home
Motorola's trying to reinvent itself, and the digital home and
content is a big part of it, according to this BW story. The idea [of
"seamless mobility"] is that Motorola should make it easy for
consumers to transport any digital information -- music, video,
e-mail, phone calls -- from the house to the car to the workplace.
Mastering that technology would do more than boost cell-phone sales.
It also could make Motorola a key player in the digital home,
helping it sell flat-panel TVs and broadband modems, home wireless
networks, and gateways to manage digital content.
Some more details on Motorola's plans for this seamless
entertainment concept was unc
overed by me early last month...
