Radio Recording
01/04/2005 11:12 AM

timetrax_ipod.jpg imageTimeTrax will be launching a raft of new products this week at CES, including this version of their XM satellite radio reciever and software that will directly copy songs recorded from the XM service onto a user's iPod. While it's somewhat impossible to, say, pull an entire album down from XM, it's still somewhat surprising there hasn't been a big hammer on TimeTrax yet, from either XM or the RIAA.

Other products from TimeTrax at CES will include Sirius versions of their hardware. Ironically, no version of the TimeTrax software is planned for the Mac.

TimeTrax: Convert XM Radio to MP3

TimeTrax: Convert XM Radio to MP3 08/13/2004 09:06 AM

TimerRecord.jpg imageIt's sad that so often we have to preface cool and useful software with a sort of 'Get it while you can,' warning, but this looks like just the sort of thing the RIAA is going to come after with crate full of lawyers. TimeTrax is a $20 piece of software that can turn your $50 XM Satellite Radio XM PCR - a PC-based XM radio, if you didn't catch that - into a sort of satellite radio PVR. It listens to the radio stream you set (and you can schedule shows in the future), then using XM's song title data converts individual songs into MP3s or WAVs. Now that sounds like Fair Use to me, and fairly useful at that, but we'll see how long it takes before Valenti draws a direct like between TimeTrax and the dissolution of the very fabric of our culture.

CNet is reporting about the RIAA's appeal yesterday to the FCC to restrict end-users' ability to make home-recordings of music broadcasted over high-quality digital radio. Fortunately, the proposals are not going unopposed, as both consumer groups and electronics industry consortiums are pushing back against the RIAA's move to remove home-taping rights that consumers have had for years.
