I wrote a short article for Infoworld about the proposal for a fast roaming task group: If the IEEE approves the request, which most involved think it will, a new standard will be hammered out to speed up hand-off. The current mechanism for hand-off in the 802.11 specification isn't fast enough to support voice calls or other multimedia applications. Today vendors have their own proprietary ways to speed up roaming but they hope to come up with a standard way to do it. Contrary to some earlier reports, Cisco told me that they are supportive of the effort. If the standard ends up being very different from the way Cisco currently handles roaming now, the company will support both the standard and its own technology. Hopefully the standards process will create an efficient and fast way to do hand-off. While writing a different story for Infoworld about voice over WLANs, I found that most of the proprietary ways to support fast hand-off weren,t totally ideal. An improved hand-off mechanism may encourage more voice over WLAN implementations....

Om Malik reports on Atheros's upcoming IPO: It's not hot, it's superheated, with a sixfold oversubscription to the number of shares potentially available at the initial public offering. Before the recent surge in IPOs, Atheros would have been a takeover target; now it's valuing itself in the open market, which could dramatically raise its asking price for a company trying to get a wedge into manufacturing 802.11a and a/g chipsets. This should also, by the way, be an interested test of the post-dotcom IPO market in which shares were distributed to favored parties who would turn them quickly, and those who bought in on day one were disappointed on day two through infinity. With new rules and watchdogs watching, I'll be curious to see if Atheros's price rises. A good IPO should see the stock priced correctly: its opening price shouldn't be too much higher than the IPO price, or the company left money on the table....

OrangeWare offers $15 driver to Mac users to pick up extra speed: We here at Wi-Fi Networking News remain dubious about the efficacy of Atheros's Turbo mode, which bonds two Wi-Fi channels and has been shown in some studies to cause interference. Atheros continues to assert there is no interference. In either case, Mac users now have access to many more options for wireless networking through the OrangeWare driver, which can support a/g cards that use Atheros chips, including the Super G features, which include compression and frame bursting, among other non-radio-frequency improvements in speed among similar devices. A free trial version is available for download. The driver lists support for a couple dozen cards (PC Cards and PCI cards) and works with Mac OS X 10.2 or later. These cards are typically less than $50 or even as low as $30, while an internal AirPort Extreme Card--if available for a given model--is $100. The driver only shows WEP, not WPA support....

I'm back and catching up after Supernova, which was spectacular this year.  Other than the flaky WiFi connection (grrrr...) and some other annoyances, it really went as well as I could have hoped.  When a couple dozen people are still in the room, talking, half an hour after the conference wraps up, you know you've made an impression.

Thanks to everyone who helped make Supernova 2004 a success.  If you weren't there, check out the blog for notes and analysis.

We'll be doing something slightly different next year.  All I can say right now is that will take all that's great about Supernova and make it even better.  Stay tuned for details.
