The SANBlaze VirtuaLUN Fibre Channel Target Emulation System delivers an extremely cost effective approach to Fibre Channel device development and testing. The VirtuaLUN can emulate hundreds of Fibre Channel disk drives for read/write performance testing environments, with no initiator side software changes required. The VirtuaLUN is the ideal tool for Fibre Channel HBA, switch and infrastructure development and testing in a real world, wire speed environment. The VirtuaLUN system reduces the need to deploy large farms of physical "scratch" disks, providing high performance, non-volatile disk media at a fraction of the cost of physical disks. Communication is a central aspect of all our lives. Today, our modes of communication are highly dependent on technologies such as the internet, wireless networks, phones, and computers. This issue of Topic in Depth explores the ways these forms of communication are part of our lives and highlights some new directions in communication technology. WordIQ Dictionary and Encyclopedia (1) offers this definition: "Communication is the process of exchanging information usually via a common system of symbols." The website explains some of the key process involved in communication and describes different forms of communication, such as animal communication, interpersonal communication, and computer-mediated communication. Also taking a broad view on communication, this world history website (2) provides some background on the mathematical theories that are used in designing telecommunications systems. The articles highlighted on this website from the Center for the Study of Technology and Society (4) attest to the far reaching influence of communication technology. As research on the MediaLab Europe website suggests (5), we have moved into not just developing technology that mediates interpersonal communication (such as phones) but also creating "intimate and personal connections with and through new technologies." This NSF website (6) also highlights some recent discoveries in Computer Information Science and Engineering. Finally, this article from First Monday (7) discusses the far-reaching effects these new developments in technology and globalization are having on language and learning.[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

In July 2004, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)launched its initiative to develop a National Health Information Infrastructure. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to create an electronic health record (EHR) for every American so that health records can be securely shared among health care providers. This Topic in Depth explores developments in electronic health records and technology.

This first website (1) is the official site for the National Health Information Infrastructure 2004: Cornerstones for Electronic Healthcare. Some current ideas for how to share medical records, such as secured online postings or saving data on flash disks are discussed in this article from PCWorld (2). This next article (3) discusses another development in information technology, implantable electronic identification chips. The fourth website (4) presents findings from a recent Medical Records Institute survey of health providers on their current uses, future hopes and perceived barriers to electronic health record systems. One challenge for the initiative is interoperability, which is explained generally on this website (5). The issue of interoperability, as well as privacy and fragmentation in the health industry are addressed in the Preliminary Roadmap for Achieving Electronic Connectivity in Healthcare released by Connecting for Health (6). For more on current research on technology supporting the use of electronic records see this website from The Electronic Record Development and Implementation Programme (ERDIP) (7).[From The NSDL Scout Report for Math, Engineering, and Technology, Copyright Internet Scout Project 1994-2003. http://scout.wisc.edu/]

Patent suits filed for p2p
information-gathering technology
11/16/2003 01:24 AM

Altnet , a peer-to-peer technology company, filed suit against nine companies for infringement infringement for their information-gathering application. The claim is that the named firms, such as Big Champagne , used Altnet's software and concepts for obtaining information about user activities within peer-to-peer (p2p) networks:

"Our intent has always been to commercialize peer to peer, and if anyone is misusing our patent for any reason, I have to protect that intellectual property," [Altnet Executive Vice President] Broes said. "If they're building business on the backs of the patent I worked hard to acquire, then they should talk to us."

Given the large audiences using p2p applications for (among other things) file-sharing, many intellectual property owners have used or considered using them to learn more about market behavior and preferences.

Black Star: Ghana, Information Technology and Development in Africa by G. Pascal Zachary
http://firstmon day.org/issues/issue9_3/zachary/

Abstract:

Accra, the capital of the West African country of Ghana, is technologically marginalized by any measure. But over the past ten years, the introduction of the Internet, wireless technology and freer radio broadcasts have vastly expanded communications and information. The Internet is widely available. E–mail usage is soaring. Wireless telephony is growing rapidly. Radio stations are proliferating. Once mired in information poverty, the people of Accra, Ghana now face the challenge of using information and connectivity to their best advantage. In examining how Accra adapts to technological change, we gain a better understanding of how people in poor African cities use technology and what they want from it. Debates over the so–called "digital divide" can be enriched by close studies of lived experience in parts of the world where the revolution in information technology remains more prospect than reality.
