High-capacity DVDs (Digital Video Disks) that use blue laser technology may soon be available to information technology professionals. Blue laser DVD-RW (rewritable) disks are expected by Sony in the U.S. as early as this June. The disks will store 23GB of data and the drives will initially be connected by SCSI or USB 2.0 interfaces. The expected cost of the first models is between $2,500 and $3,000; however, fast price drops should follow.

NEC announces
three-generation-compatible HD DVD drive
12/22/2004 01:27 AM
A new prototype HD DVD drive capable of playing back HD DVDs, DVDs, and CDs with a single optical head has been announced by NEC Corporation today. NEC Corporation said the new drive enables the creation of the world's first half height size drive suitable for desktop computer installation. It plans on exhibiting the new prototype drive at the 2005 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas from January 6th to 9th, 2005. NEC said the main features of this prototype drive are its three-wavelength-compatible optical head, its three-generation-compatible system LSI, its half height size capable of installation in desktop PCs, and its stable operation on the compatible drive. NEC and Toshiba have proposed the "HD DVD" format, which employs blue LDs with shorter than conventional wavelength as its light source to enable higher recording density. NEC said in order to realize compatibility with current discs, such as CDs and DVDs, a large number of parts are required resulting in a large-sized drive and that this has been one of the major challenges to overcome.

Both require Mac OS X v10.2.8, a G4 running at 500MHz and 512MB RAM. In addition, an internal model that ships with Toast 6.0 and Dantz Retrospect is available for $139. It needs a G3 running at 266MHz (a G4 is required for authoring), Mac OS X v10.2 and 512MB RAM.

Optical Drive

Philips Unveils World’s First Blu-Ray
Optical Drive
01/04/2005 01:23 PM
New Drive from Philps Can Play CDs, DVDs, BDs. Royal Philips Electronics Tuesday said it would showcase the world’s first commercial optical drive that can play compact discs, digital video discs and blu-ray discs at Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, Nevada later during the week. The drive, that can read, record and re-write CDs and DVDs as well as play Blu-Ray discs, will be demonstrated during the CES show in the USA, but will only hit the market in the second half of the year, as expected.

Furthermore, the drive is unlikely to be in mass demand until sometime in 2006, when film studios release their movies on Blu-Ray discs. Philips’ new optical drive features three types of lasers, including one so-called blue-laser that has shorter wave-length allowing to read physically smaller bits of information. Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by thirteen leading consumer electronics and PC companies, such as Dell, Hitachi, HP, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson.

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets

Blue Bands for Blue Budgets 02/01/2005 10:09 PM

I had to go all the way over to LISNews< /a> to find out that a sister Library System here in Illinois has started a totally awesome project called Libraries Matter. Here at home, our kids saved up some money to buy the 10–pack of Lance Armstrong yellow wristbands because they’re all the rage at school. Can you imagine if we could start something similar with these blue ones for libraries? Brilliant job, Alliance Library System!

One thing, though – how about offering packs smaller than 50 so that ordinary folks like myself can buy some and give them out to friends, kids, etc.? Let’s get some grassroots support going, not just top down from the institutional level! Then, let’s think about how we can use these on Advocacy Day this year.

Tangent: When visiting the ALS web site tonight, I realized they’ve added blogs to the home page (kind of, sort of). Sweet! Unfortunately, no RSS feeds to be found anywhere, which means I won’t be able to add them to my aggregator, which means I’ll have to keep relying on other web sites to highlight ALS projects for me. Not sweet. C’mon, ALS, show us the RSS!

Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM

DriveProVP300_2.jpg imageThe Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for only the price of additional hard drives.

Cal Berkeley Demonstrates How Not to
Handle Security

Cal Berkeley Demonstrates How Not to
Handle Security
03/29/2005 08:00 PM

On March 11th a thief walked into a University of Cal at Berkeley office  and walked out with a laptop. This laptop had personal information on it from about 100,000 alumni. Now if that wasn’t bad enough, they did not announce it to the public until now. University officials were hoping that police would be able to catch the thief and reclaim the computer. When that didn't happen, the school publicized the theft to comply with a state law requiring consumers be notified whenever their Social Security numbers or other sensitive information have been breached. The university has set up a hotline, 1-800-372-5110, and a Web site, to answer questions about the laptop theft.http://newscenter .berkeley.edu/security/grad/

From the AP ..  Universities have accounted for 28 percent of the 50 security breaches of personal information recorded by California since 2003, said Joanne McNabb, the chief of the state's Office of Privacy Protection. That's more than any other group, including financial institutions, which have accounted for 26 percent of the breaches affecting Californians. This is the second time in six months that UC Berkeley has been involved in a theft of personal information. Last September, a computer hacker gained access to UC Berkeley research being done for the state Department of Social Services. The files contained personal information of about 600,000 people. That security breach hasn't been linked to any cases of identity theft, Felde said.
