controller
01/03/2005 07:31 PM

Nyko Technologies on Monday announced that it will use this week's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas to introduce a new line of accessories for the iPod and iPod mini, along with a version of its AirFlo gaming controller that works with Macintosh and Windows computers. All of the products will launch in early 2005; a company representative told MacCentral that pricing and specs will become available when CES kicks off. Next week, Nyko's Web site will be updated to reflect the introductions.

Nyko Digi-Cam SP Game Boy Camera 06/02/2004 04:48 PM

jnyko_digicamsp.jpg imageLow-end videogame accessory maker Nyko has a new camera for the Game Boy Advance SP, inventively called the "Digi-Cam SP," which GadgetMadness speculates uses the same innards as the Nyko WormCam, another low-quality camera peripheral for the regular GBA. I'm sure it's pretty terribly, but might be a fun distraction for a few minutes as you play around with its motion-detecting 'spycam mode.'

Controller with Headset
09/07/2004 09:04 AM

2_LM616_a.jpg imageAlthough the controller itself looks sort of janky, the Hip Gear XB-Comm Bluetooth Wireless Controller & Headset has a cool trick. Even though the headset itself is wired, it connects to the controller, which then uses Bluetooth to communicate back to the Xbox itself, allowing you to play Xbox Live and scream at your idiot friends essentially wire-free. Now maybe somebody will release a Bluetooth headset that connects wireless to the controller that then uses a different frequency to connect to the Xbox.

06/22/2005 01:54 AM
Microsoft has developed technology to allow the forthcoming Xbox 360 to be connected online with portable game systems of rival firms and Apple's iPod, according to company statements made last week. According to TechNewsWorld, Microsoft officials said users of the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) and the Nintendo DS will be able to connect their machines with the Xbox 360 and play Microsoft's games over the Internet. All three companies plan to equip their next-generation game consoles with advanced Internet connection functions. The report also says Microsoft is considering making Xbox 360 connectable with Apple's iPod portable digital music player. The Xbox 360 is expected out later this year.

Cory Doctorow: The Brunching Shuttlecocks once featured an hilarious choose-your-own-adven ture game based on Harry Potter, by David Neilsen.

It turns out that iPods have a "museum" mode where text notes and audio clips can be combined so that museums and other venues can hand out iPods to patrons, who trigger narration by clicking the iPod's button based on signs at each exhibit. This is also well-suited to Choose-Your-Own-Adventure games.

So here's a choose-your-own-adventure Harry Potter parody game for the iPod -- wow! Link (scroll down page to 3/25/04 entry)

Intro to Bindings

Intro to Bindings 04/30/2004 01:35 PM
Historically, Cocoa developers have had to keep data objects and view objects in sync manually... By just writing a few methods, you give life to very rich, full-featured tables. Cocoa does a lot of the hard work. But if you have multiple controls that depend on each other, there's more work involved... Bindings gives you a way to define relationships, and Cocoa figures out what to do at runtime. You have to write less code, which means faster development and more functionality for free.

Toys That Connect With TVs

Toys That Connect With TVs 02/18/2004 07:58 PM
It seems like an odd time for "new toy" stories to be coming out. They usually appear as we swing into the holiday season, not two months later. Anyway, it seems that despite years and years of failed attempts at making toys that interact with TV (Microsoft's Barney doll...), companies are at it again, but this time, they think kids will really want toys that interact with the TV. Of course, this faces the same problem that has come up every time people think up this idea. Most people watch TV. They consume it. They don't interact with it, and adding a toy in the middle doesn't necessarily improve things. Of course, there is an element of getting kids to read/sing/clap along with a TV, but it's not clear if the toy really enhances that process. Meanwhile, it seems like many kids are less interested in TV and more interested in the internet. Of course, it won't be long before we have toys that interact with the internet as well (I'm sure some are already out there).
