NetNewsWire 2.0b10: podcasting, Atom,
bug fixes, more

NetNewsWire
2.0b10 includes bug fixes, a rewritten Atom parser, a bunch of
small new features and enhancements—but the feature that will
probably get the most attention is podcasting support.
Note: it’s still a beta. It still has bugs. In fact, one of the
changes we made was that, the first time you launch it, a window
appears that reminds you it’s a beta.
Some of the changes you were waiting for—they’re in there
now. Some things you’re waiting for aren’t there
yet—but we’re working on them!
The
change notes go into more detail.
Screen shots
Before talking more about podcasting, here are a few screen shots,
since the look of things has changed a little bit since the previous
beta:
Podcasting
We weren’t originally going to add podcasting support to
NetNewsWire 2.0—but after intense lobbying by a thousand and one
podcast enthusiasts, we changed our mind.
Here’s the gist of how it works:
1. Whenever there’s a news item with an enclosure, NetNewsWire
tells you, and gives you buttons you can click to download it to disk
or to iTunes.
2. You can tell NetNewsWire to download enclosures automatically or
not.
3. You can tell NetNewsWire to send audio enclosures to iTunes. You
can tell it to use the name of the feed as the playlist name, or you
can specify a playlist name. You can also specify a genre and you can
tell NetNewsWire to delete downloaded files after sending them to
iTunes.
4. You can create a smart list that shows all your enclosures.
(See some of the screen shots further up to see what all this looks
like.)
This is all still beta, of course—there may be bugs, and the
feature may still evolve based on feedback.
More features
There are a bunch of other cool things I want to point out—but
I’ll save them for follow-up posts...

Atom has better podcasting support than
RSS
Atom has better podcasting support than
RSS
06/05/2005 11:32 PM
Podcasting originated as a feature of RSS, but as the world moves to
the new standard Atom format, podcasters will too. Atom can support
podcasting through the
<link> element. As is the case
with RSS 2.0 based podcasts, you can only have one podcast per entry.
But, with Atom you can have a different representation for each
language and for each content-type. For example, if you want to make a
podcast available in both English and German and in both MP3 and WMV
formats, you can do it by adding links like those below to the entries
in your feed:
<link
href=”http://example.com/podcasts/show001-usenglish.mpg”
hreflang=”en-US” length=”21472922” type=”audio/mpg”
/>
<link
href=”http://example.com/podcasts/show001-usenglish.wmv”
hreflang=”en-US” length=”23889921” type=”audio/wmv”
/>
<link href=”http://example.com/podcasts/show001-german.mp3”
hreflang=”de-DE” length=”20032879” type=”audio/mpg”
/>
<link href=”http://example.com/podcasts/show001-german.wmv”
hreflang=”de-DE” length=”19907766” type=”audio/wmv”
/>
Disclaimer: Atom is a work in progress
(but nearl
y complete
).
This is based on
Atom format draft 08

JSPWiki gains podcasting support
JSPWiki gains podcasting support
06/24/2005 10:03 PM...which is the hype way of saying that JSPWiki supports RSS 2.0 and
the enclosure-tag in 2.2.27,
released
a> about 30 seconds ago.
Essentially, all attachments on a page entries are added as
enclosures, if you request a page in blog mode (and add
"type=rss20" to the rss.jsp request URL to enable RSS 2.0).
Why podcasting support? Well... Let's leave it a mystery for now,
shall we?

ANN: FeedDemon 1.5 Beta 3a with
podcasting support
12/17/2004 06:38 PMFeedDemon 1.5 BETA 3a is now available. As
you can see from the release
notes, there are a number of changes in this build, the most
notable being podcasti
ng and improved enclosure support.
After downloading beta 3a, simply install it directly on top of
your current version of FeedDemon and your existing data will be
retained. However, given that this is a beta release, I recommend
backing up FeedDemon's cache folder before upgrading
(if you're not sure where this folder is, select File >
Manage Cache > Explore Cache Folder).
Note to translators: FeedDemon's language file is likely to change
in subsequent betas, so I recommend against translating it until
version 1.5 has reached release candidate (RC) status.

BoingBoing adds Technorati support - you
can too!
04/13/2004 04:40 AMTonight, BoingBoing added
in a
new feature that allows you to to find "Other blogs commenting on
this post" for each post. It is an ingenious use of the Technorati search functionality embedded inside of the Movable Type template that
BoingBoing uses. This is a great way for a site to provide a
distributed commenting system that incorporates transparency and
accountability - to comment on BoingBoing, you just post something
that links to BoingBoing, and you'll show up in the "Other blogs
commenting on this post" page. It also discourages spammers and
tolls, because all comments must be posted on the commenter's blog,
and those posts are accountable - even if you want to remain
anonymous, the commenting blog can now itself be commented upon, ad
infinitum.
Here's how you can add it to your own Movable Type weblog
template:
1) Edit your blog
2) Click on "Templates"
3) Click on "Main Index"
4) Somewhere imbetween the <$MTEntries$> and the
<$/MTEntries> tags, add this to your template:
<a
href="http://www.technorati.com/cosmos/search.html?rank=&sub=mtcosmos&
url=<$MTEntryPermalink$>" title="Technorati Cosmos">Other
blogs commenting on this post</a>
5) Click on "Save"
6) Click on "Rebuild Site"
I just added it to this blog. Here's a link to the
template for Sifry's Alerts main index page. Give it a go, and
let me know how it works for you!
