about Behr
Paint's wonderful Lazlo-based color picker
application reminded me that I needed a color picker myself so I
went shopping for
one this afternoon.
I have a healthy respect for the power
of colors but my color-sense is one-directional: I can go from
colors to judgement
but not the other way. That is, I can't say “I want
some nice professional
set of colors for these set of web pages” and then come up
with one. Thankfully,
there are programs to help me. Most of them are
appropriately priced pathetic
sharewares, but I found a couple that looked good: ColorImpact
2 and Color Wheel Pro
2.
After trying both, I found Color Wheel Pro 2 to be the better of
the two. Lucky
for me, it even costs less than the other one. Nice.
Update:

Apple Shows Some Mean Colors
Apple Shows Some Mean Colors
07/29/2004 11:26 AMCNN: Apple:
RealNetworks hacked iPod. Apple Computer accused RealNetworks
Thursday of adopting the tactics of a hacker and breaking into the
technology behind its popular music player iPod device.
So Apple is happy to let you play your music only in the
way it permits, if you're going to use its devices. The company says
it'll rewrite its software to thwart Real's customer-friendly hack --
and I use that word in the benevolent sense -- that lets people use
what they've bought with just a bit more freedom than Apple wishes to
grant.
Threats to use copyright law against Real are exactly what you'd
expect, unfortunately. Apple wants control over online music, and this
is just part of the game.
What we customers want is cross-platform compatibility: standards.
What the companies want is lock-in. They may win, but they're only
locking me out -- because I won't play by those rules. Which means
I've bought my last iTunes Music Store song until Apple starts paying
more attention to what its customers want.
Olympus m:robe 100 in Two New Colors
Olympus m:robe 100 in Two New Colors
04/14/2005 10:03 AM
Olympus
is offering two new colors of their m:robe MR-100 MP3
player—sort of. The front of the device is still the
Knight-Rider-like red-on-black (of which, I must say, I am a
fan). The back of the current models is white, but the new models will
be available with backs in light pink and light blue. It's like those
videos I used to stare at when I was a kid, where the cover girl was a
studious bookworm by day but a crime-fighting whore at night. I may be
getting some of the plot-points confused.
No idea if we'll get these models in America. I guess it depends on
how well the MR-100 is selling, which is hard to augur considering
Olympus misguidedly put all their marketting muscle into the
MR-500.

Making colors safe for Windows and Mac
08/28/2004 11:08 AMIn a curious filing dated Aug. 26, Apple has applied for a patent
detailing a "Color palette providing cross-platform
consistency." According to the patent’s abstract, the palette
looks to work in conjunction with an existing application to
"facilitate user selection of web-safe colors."
The images attached to the filing show an OS-9 interface with what
looks to be a Photoshop 5-type color window. Colors are eventually
arranged into groups of "Non web-safe" and
"Web-safe" colors for Windows and Macintosh:
"In laying out the color palette, the extent of achromatic
colors located within the color palette is determined. The achromatic
colors are then arranged in one group on the palette, for instance in
order of lightest to darkest. The non web-safe chromatic colors are
then grouped together. From this grouping blends of the colors are
created. Finally, the web-safe chromatic colors are grouped together.
Blends with respect to the web-safe chromatic colors are created and
then grouped on the color palette.”
While it seems to be a relatively outdated concept (with outdated
diagrams), Apple has yet to incorporate this specific technology in
one of its applications.

Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors
Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors
03/23/2005 07:57 PMTwo teams of Astronomers this week discovered the color of two
planets by using infrared radiation. This break-through will allow
experts to discover what the planet’s surface or
atmosphere are made of. This is a major finding. According to Astronomy Magazine,

Charbonneau's group used the Spitzer Space
Telescope's Infrared Array Camera to home in on the light from TrES-1,
a "hot Jupiter" zipping around a Sun-like star about 500 light-years
from Earth in the constellation Lyra. The astronomers tracked the
intensity of two infrared "colors" as the planet passed behind its
star, an event called secondary eclipse. The team subtracted the
star's radiation from the total seen when the planet was not eclipsed
by the star. Measuring the gas giant's infrared radiation allowed the
team to calculate its temperature — a sizzling 1,450° F
(1,060 kelvins). Charbonneau suspects his group has also found the
spectral fingerprint of carbon monoxide in the planet's atmosphere,
but, he says, "We're going to go back and get more data."

challenges Darwin's theory of "sexual selection." To Darwin,
mutations that don't enhance survival, like peacocks' tails, must be
aids to attracting mates to pass on genes. Homosexuality, therefore,
is to Darwin and the Christian-right both an unnatural aberration.
But with ever growing evidence of
homsexual behavior in animals, from

isn't it time that Darwin's theory get replaced?

Charles Darwin on Tsunamis (1835)
Charles Darwin on Tsunamis (1835)
01/03/2005 12:14 PMXeni Jardin:
During his crew's historic voyage on the
Beagle in 1835,
Charles Darwin experienced an earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Snip
from Darwin's description:
Shortly after the shock, a great wave was seen from the distance of
three or four miles, approaching in the middle of the bay with a
smooth outline; but along the shore it tore up cottages and trees, as
it swept onwards with irresistible force. At the head of the bay it
broke in a fearful line of white breakers, which rushed up to a height
of 23 vertical feet above the highest spring-tides. Their force must
have been prodigious; for at the Fort a cannon with its carriage,
estimated at four tons in weight, was moved 15 feet inwards.
A schooner was left in the midst of the ruins, 200 yards from the
beach. The first wave was followed by two others, which in their
retreat carried away a vast wreck of floating objects. In one part of
the bay, a ship was pitched high and dry on shore, was carried off,
again driven on shore, and again carried off. In another part two
large vessels anchored near together were whirled about, and their
cables were thrice wound round each other: though anchored at a depth
of 36 feet, they were for some minutes aground.
The great wave must have travelled slowly, for the inhabitants of
Talcahuano had time to run up the hills behind the town; and some
sailors pulled out seaward, trusting successfully to their boat riding
securely over the swell, if they could reach it before it broke. One
old woman with a little boy, four or five years old, ran into a boat,
but there was nobody to row it out: the boat was consequently dashed
against an anchor and cut in twain; the old woman was drowned, but the
child was picked up some hours afterwards clinging to the wreck. Pools
of salt-water were still standing amidst the ruins of the houses, and
children, making boats with old tables and chairs, appeared as happy
as their parents were miserable.

ability to backup your compiled ports as binary tarballs
which can be reinstalled at any time if something goes
wrong.
Changes:
In this release, the version checking code is 500% percent
faster, pkg_upgrade can update all ports at once, and there
are some cosmetic fixes.

The founder of the GNU-Darwin project wrote an
interesting editorial on Apple and open source today. I really
appreciate that the GNU-Darwin project played a role in helping to
make the APSL a better open
source license.
In my opinion, Apple has made a lot of good progress (such as opening
up Darwin, WebCore, and the Objective-C runtime under the APSL) but I
do hope they'll go further and open up Cocoa under the APSL.
Frequently when programming in Cocoa I remember that I have no
significant rights since everything is still, as all of the Cocoa
header files simply say, "Copyright 2003 Apple Computer. All Rights
Reserved". I didn't use to care about that. Open source helped me
realize that I can have rights, too. Apple's been gracious so far, I
hope they continue to be. It's played a significant role in me buying
and evangelizing Apple products.

Kiwi Vies For Darwin Award
Kiwi Vies For Darwin Award
08/30/2004 01:27 PMThis is about two years old, but I ran across it on SlashDot today
in the midst of the discussion of a guy that strapped a jet engine to a wheelchair (worthy of his
own post). What tops that? How about this New
Zealander:
Unfortunately that small quantity of ice would not keep
multiple beers cold during the course of a day in the shed. And no,
you cannot, not under any circumstances, put ice into the beer. No!
It was obvious I had to come up with a better solution to the
problem.
I knew from some long forgotten physics lecture that when a liquid
expands into a gas it will draw heat from its surroundings. And I
happened to have a source of a suitable liquid right in my shed in the
form of a LPG cylinder. [...] What I needed was a way to use up a lot
of fuel very, very quickly.
What I needed was a jet engine!
If you're a tinkerer, this is a good one to print and give to your
spouse so that they can see that you could be so much worse.
