Milne heirs don't own Pooh
01/22/2004 03:35 PMAA Milne's granddaughter has had her bid to recapture the licensing
rights to Winnie the Pooh denied by a UK court. The Milne heirs
licensed the rights to Pooh to Disney, only to discover that Milne had
previously sold them to his literary agent, who is now suing Disney
for all they're worth. The UK court ruling is the latest setback on
the way to what could be the Disney company's financial ruination for
(ironically!) trademark infringement.

whatsoever and it's quite normal for them to take every working hour
of the day and it's just as normal for you to have no real sense of
what you've accomplished at the end of the day. I'm in a bit of a funk
at the moment - trying to get some sense of what I'm accomplishing and
how to accomplish it better - how to make something truly worthwhile

Wow,
Sony can't catch a break. First the Queen of England buys an
iPod mini. Then, at a luncheon with new Sony CEO Howard
Stringer—a known Englishman Welshman (Welsh, English,
whatev! Don't make us bomb you.)—the Queen chided him for
making products that are difficult to use. "I have a lot of trouble
with your remote controls," she's quoted. "Too many arrows."
What Queen Elizabeth II neglected to admit, however, is that due to
the long history of in-marriage in the Hapsburg line, she has only a
single lobster claw at the tip of each arm.

The Washington Post gets it
06/09/2004 06:03 AMMuch of what civil libertarians feared about this administration turns
out to be have been true. As the Washington Post points out in today's
lead editorial, Legalizing Torture: This week, thanks again to an
independent press, we have begun to learn the deeply disturbing truth
about the legal opinions that the Pentagon and the Justice Department
seek to keep secret. According to copies leaked to several newspapers,
they lay out a shocking and immoral set of justifications for torture.
In a paper prepared last year under the direction of the Defense
Department's chief counsel, and first disclosed by the Wall Street
Journal, the president of the United States was declared empowered to
disregard U.S. and international law and order the torture of foreign
prisoners. Moreover, interrogators following the president's orders
were declared immune from punishment. Torture itself was narrowly
redefined, so that techniques that inflict pain and mental suffering
could be deemed legal. All this was done as a prelude to the
designation of 24 interrogation methods for foreign prisoners -- the
same techniques, now in use, that President Bush says are humane but
refuses to disclose. There is no justification, legal or moral, for
the judgments made by Mr. Bush's political appointees at the Justice
and Defense departments. Theirs is the logic of criminal regimes, of
dictatorships around the world that sanction torture on grounds of
"national security." For decades the U.S. government has waged
diplomatic campaigns against such outlaw governments -- from the
military juntas in Argentina and Chile to the current autocracies in
Islamic countries such as Algeria and Uzbekistan -- that claim torture
is justified when used to combat terrorism. The news that serving U.S.
officials have officially endorsed principles once advanced by Augusto
Pinochet brings shame on American democracy -- even if it is true, as
the administration maintains, that its theories have not been put into
practice. Even on paper, the administration's reasoning will provide a
ready excuse for dictators, especially those allied with the Bush
administration, to go on torturing and killing detainees. Perhaps the
president's lawyers have no interest in the global impact of their
policies -- but they should be concerned about the treatment of
American servicemen and civilians in foreign countries. Before the
Bush administration took office, the Army's interrogation procedures
-- which were unclassified -- established this simple and sensible
test: No technique should be used that, if used...

02/18/2004 10:48 AMI've been invited to testify next Tuesday before the
Senate Commerce Committee on
voice over IP. I'll post more details when I get the formal
invitation.
I expect a more challenging environment than the FCC hearing in
December. Some members of Congress are worried that, unless VOIP is
subject to legacy telecom regulation, grave damage will be done to
universal service, public safety, and national security. This is
simply not the case, but the concerns raise legitimate issues.
We
need to separate fact from fiction, and social policy from the demands
of special interests.

04/09/2004 04:11 PMAccording to this Washington Post article, the unemployment rate
in the DC area is the lowest in the nation. In the
well-educated Maryland and Virginia suburbs unemployment is
between 1.6 and 2.2 percent, ridiculously low compared to the national
average of 6.6 percent. Best of all the standards for working
hours and difficulty are set by the federal government. A doctor
I talked to said that she went to work for the Food and Drug
Administration: "It felt like a 2-year vacation compared to
working in a private practice. The funniest part was that the
people who worked there complained about how hard their jobs
were."

More Fiscal Recklessness from Washington
More Fiscal Recklessness from Washington
09/23/2004 09:08 AMNY Times: Deal
in Congress to Keep Tax Cuts, Widening Deficit. Putting aside
efforts to control the federal deficit before the elections,
Republican and Democratic leaders agreed Wednesday to extend $145
billion worth of tax cuts sought by President Bush without trying to
pay for them.
The irresponsibility of these folks
boggles the imagination. We know the Republicans have long since
abandoned any sense of seriousness on this issue, but to see the
Democrats -- who were the party of fiscal responsibility in the 1990s
-- go the same way is disheartening.
It's not a tax cut. It's just a delayed tax increase. For our kids.

So, last March, a bunch of Congresscritters and religious
leaders held a little ceremony in the Dirksen Senate Office Building
for Sun Myung Moon, head of the Unification Church, owner of the
Washington Times, and an all-around peach of a guy with a messianic
complex like you wouldn't believe. During said ceremony, Moon and his
wife are wrapped in ermine robes and crowned by an Illinois
Congressman. The video appeared on the Church's site, some blogs
found it, it got yanked, and now John Gorenfeld, whose site tracks
Moon, has the video and has cranked out a BitTorrent of it. They can

Remote Washington Reservation Gets Wi-Fi
Remote Washington Reservation Gets Wi-Fi
04/09/2004 03:57 PMIndians who live on the Sauk-Suiattle reservation in the Cascade
mountains now have Wi-Fi covering the reservation: Twenty computers
have been donated for residents. The project was initiated by the
Economic Development Corp. of the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest
Indians. The same group also built a portal and planned to bring
broadband access to the Makah Indians using Wi-Fi. In this case, the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Verizon Avenue took part in
building the network and donating computers. The Economic Development
Corp. sponsored computer training for residents. I wrote a story about
the Makah network and found that the idea here isn't to just deliver
Internet access but to open doors for the reservation residents.
Residents can take online educational courses and possibly work
remotely for companies. One reservation in Eastern Washington built a
sophisticated telephony network on the reservation in hopes of
attracting some company to build a call center there as a way to
create jobs. Otherwise, most residents must leave the reservation to
find work. Eventually, the Economic Development Corp. plans to bring
Internet access to reservations throughout the northwest and link all
the networks together as a way to share ideas among reservation
residents and build a broader community....
