InfoEyes: an Online Information Community and Virtual Reference Services for the Visually Impaired

"Under the leadership of the Illinois State Library Talking Book and Braille Service, the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center and the Southern Illinois Talking Book Center are pleased to announce the opening of InfoEyes(http://www.infoeyes.org) on November 3, an online information community and virtual reference service for the visually impaired.

Talking book readers, other visually impaired individuals, and librarians are invited to use the trial service. Through the service, library customers can get assistance using the Internet, finding information on the Internet and in periodical databases and reader advisory service. Librarians will be using OCLC Question Point Enhanced software to provide services which include voice over IP, co-browsing, and application sharing. The trial will run through July 30, 2004. It is hoped that more libraries in other states serving the visually impaired will join Illinois in providing these services. Customers will be asked to evaluate the service and resources to help librarians in developing the service. Hours of service are posted on the web page and it is hoped that as more libraries join the service that hours can be extended. If customers want service outside of those hours, they can schedule an appointment or a reference session.

As the project develops, more information will be posted on the website. Tom Peters of TAP Information Services is the project evaluator and will write an evaluation of the project which will be made available when the project ends. If you have questions on the service, please contact Lori Bell (lbell@alliancelibrarysys tem.com) of the Mid-Illinois Talking Book Center or Diana Brawley Sussman (dbrawley@shawls.lib.il.us< /A>) of the Southern Illinois Talking Book Center." Just a reminder - first things first today is the last day that you can vote for this year's Bloggies. And secondly, I want to put in a bit of a plug for daily dose of imagery in the Best Photography category, because (despite the fact that the site suffers from one of those appallingly truncated taster-only RSS feeds* that drive me absolutely barking) the images are simply and regularly beautiful. Particularly recommended is today's snowy car-lot in Toronto. Extraordinary.

* Other plasticbag.org regulars / favourites that don't get read as much as they should because of this fetish for miserable little RSS-dribblings: Zeldman, Oskarn.org, Worlds of Waldman, Wish Jar Journal and Paranoid Fish. I know that you all have your reasons, but really...! Lots more people would hear what you had to say if you'd just be amenable to how we'd like to read your sites...

Source Tool
05/28/2004 01:48 AM
The Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office 2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this local installation source to install Office, and the local source remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance mode to add new features without their original media.

Innovative Gets Busy!

Innovative Gets Busy! 06/05/2005 11:24 PM

I’m totally snowed under writing grants and dealing with some medical stuff going on at home, but I just had to post about this. Someone forwarded to me Innovative’s June 2005 newsletter (PDF). See if you can spot why from the following list of just a few things they will be introducing in upcoming releases:

  • A program registration module that uses the patron database to let your users register for events.
  • Spell-check for searches in the catalog (let’s add auto suggest, too, eh?).
  • “Patron materials rating,” which is an ugly way of saying user ratings and you can see how others are rating titles. You can also add a reading history module that lets users track what they’ve already read, all of which integrates with the ratings piece.
  • WebBridge “smart” linking, which highlights resources you’ve designated for specific searches when the user runs that search.
  • The ability to link to ebook and audio ebook vendors from the 856 field in AirPAC.
  • Sympsoia, a digital repository module.
  • RSS.

Yep, you read that right – RSS! So the good news is that they are currently beta testing RSS feeds with Yale University, and Innovative seems to understand what they need to offer in terms of feeds.

“Now, Innovative’s RSS (Really Simple Syndication) development will make possible new time-critical features for both anonymous and logged-in users of the online catalog. RSS is an XML format that allows organizations and individuals to feed news data directly into news readers or webpages as it is updated. The XML feed can be converted to HTML for use in a wide variety of contexts.

It is already possible to add these HTML portions with feed data into any library-customizable page in the Web OPAC. With Release 2006LE, available late this year, Innovative customers will have the ability to convert feeds to HTML without using third-party solutions. Also, the library will be able to generate its own feeds of new titles acquired by the library….

Innovative will use RSS to support one-to-many communication, but in Release 2006 there will also be one-to-one support. Patrons will be able to get RSS messages as part of their My Millennium suite of personalization features. Timely messages such as ‘Materials due tomorrow’ or ‘New item on hold shelf for you’ will let patrons know about their interactions with the library more quickly than ever before.”

I am thrilled to hear about all of this, but you also just read the bad news – 2006. That means my SWAN libraries really will lose a minimum of 924 hours of staff time this year after all. Still, they’re heading in the right direction and doing lots of cool stuff, so I tip my hat to III and say job well done!

Channel Z is innovative

Channel Z is innovative 04/25/2004 09:51 AM

I went looking for a pointer for Channel Z and noted two things.

Google knows I'm in the Netherlands. This is irritating. I may be in the Netherlands, but I don't speak Dutch. How do I tell it to stop being so smart and just give me Google-As-Usual for a guy from the US who likes the Mets.

Second, when I searched for Channel Z the top hit was a post from a guy at O'Reilly complaining that I stole the idea from him. What utter nonsense. The idea of hierarchic directories certainly predates blogging tools. Manila has had a hierarchic directory browser since 2000. And everything in Channel Z is edited in an outliner, and as far as I know no other blogging tool has one, and if it does, was it really the first outliner? I did my first outliner in 1978. Doug Engelbart did one before. I think that's about it.

I'd argue, to a certain degree, yes. After all, he is probably one of the major force in creating the software industry -- software as something that a company can sell on its own, rather than something that is given away free with the hardware.

Screenshot The stunnel program is designed to work as an SSL encryption wrapper between remote client and local (inetd-startable) or remote server. It can be used to add SSL functionality to commonly used inetd daemons like POP2, POP3, and IMAP servers without any changes in the programs' code. It will negotiate an SSL connection using the OpenSSL or SSLeay libraries. It calls the underlying crypto libraries, so stunnel supports whatever cryptographic algorithms you compiled into your crypto package.

Security threat in a can

Security threat in a can 07/02/2004 01:11 PM
As we previously noted, Coke has launched a contest revolving around a small number of cans outfitted with cell phones and GPS receivers. Winners who discover the cans call a prize center to win big prizes. According to the AP though, military bases are paranoid that soldiers might bring the cans into classified meetings where they could inadvertently be used as an eavesdropping device. For example, Sue Murphy, a spokeswoman for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, told the AP that her facility has "taken measures to make sure everyone's aware of this contest and to make sure devices are cleared before they're taken in." The special cans shouldn't be too hard to spot though--they have a big panel of buttons on the side.
Paul Saffo, research director at The Institute for the Future, a technology research firm, compared the concern about the Coke cans to when the Central Intelligence Agency banned Furbies, the stuffed toys that could repeat phrases. "There's things generals should stay up late at night worrying about," he said. "A talking Coke can isn't one of them."
