Xeni Jardin:
The total number of dead is now believed to be more than 80,000, and
rising. In some places, one in every four citizens have lost their
lives. Many of the areas hit were extremely poor to begin with, and
some 1/3 of the dead are children. Following up on previous BoingBoing
posts about fundraising and relief efforts kick-started in the
blogosphere:
Scott Hanselman proposes that Google allow bloggers that use AdSense
to donate ad proceeds to tsunami relief. Link (Thanks, Peter Provost).
Andy Carvin at Digital Divide
Network says, "In response to this week's devastating tsunami in the
Indian Ocean, the Digital Divide Network has created an online
community workspace on disaster relief and emergency preparedness: Link
. The virtual community can be used for posting online resources,
documents, news, and articles about tsunami relief efforts. Users also
may take advantage of the site's Web bulletin board and post their own
blog entries."
BoingBoing reader Andrew Falconer proposes
that folks who've received holiday gift cards convert them into
donations to a tsunami relief charity. "I've emailed Home Depot,
Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Swapagift.com regarding gift card donations
directly to tsunami relief charities. Amazon.com has already
implemented the ability to donate via their One-Click system."
Reader J. Hahn says, "I am particularly impressed with Amazon.com's Red Cross donation counter that
proves Americans are not 'stingy.' Also, as a Mac user, I was proud to
go to the apple.com site and see
not one product ad on their front page - just links to aid and
donation sites, and Microsoft
had not one mention of the disaster."

IBM aids tsunami recovery efforts
01/05/2005 01:25 PMIBM will be sending 1,000 ThinkPad laptop computers equipped with
fingerprint scanning technology to Thailand to aid in the
identification of victims of the Asian tsunami.
IBM Corporate Community Relations worked closely with its US business
partners to secure the technology – as well as extra batteries,
country-specific power supplies, Web cameras and fingerprint scanners
– over the New Year’s holiday weekend. IBM volunteers are now in the
process of preparing the equipment for shipment to Bangkok, Thailand,
where they will be distributed to outlying areas.
The effort is just one part of an outpouring of IBM volunteer and
corporate support that includes $1 million in cash and services, a
total that may increase. The IBM Crisis Response Team has been in the
region for nearly a week coordinating universal technology solutions
that can be used across geographies to help coordinate disaster
recovery efforts.

Tragedy Disaster Relief Efforts
01/06/2005 04:07 AMThe Tsunami Tragedy that has affected South Asia, India and Africa has
to be the worst disaster of our lifetime. We feel that the Salvation
Army has one of the best records in actually delivering the funds to
the needy. We have heard all types of advertisements and plea’s for
donation from all types of organizations, some are well known but
others just seem to come out of nowhere! We have yet to hear much
about The Salvation Army, and their ongoing or current efforts so we
wanted to try to help them the best way we know how. Not just with
our donation but by bringing them some exposure on the Internet!

Post-Tsunami Reconnect project
Post-Tsunami Reconnect project
12/29/2004 02:36 PM
Xeni Jardin:
Author and wireless geek Mike Outmesguine announces a disaster relief
project aimed at bringing connectivity to tsunami victims cut off from
communications services by the disaster.
I am working to organize a disaster relief effort to help those
affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami. I'd like to send wireless
equipment and expertise to damaged areas to help reconnect the people.
I'm still working out the details and will update you as more
develops. It will be organized with folks from the Southern California
Wireless Users Group, SOCALWUG and other wireless groups that wish to
participate. I started calling it the Post-Tsunami Reconnect.
Xeni Jardin mentioned the effort today on Fox News Channel during an
interview about bloggers and the tsunami. I will have a video excerpt
available soon. Here is a statement I sent to the Center for
International Disaster Information about the effort:
"We are a Southern California based user community of experts and
advocates of wireless data communications. Wireless community members
supplied technical expertise and wireless equipment for the Florida
hurricane relief efforts and to military personnel stationed in Iraq.
We would like to organize, collect, and deliver wireless data
equipment to disaster relief workers and others in the affected region
to help maintain a high level of communication and internet access
ability. We would also be able to send engineers into the area to help
bring connections online."
For more information or to discuss a donation of funds, equipment,
or your expertise, contact Mike Outmesguine by email "mo at
wifi-toys.com" or voice:

On a frustration with pundits and social

On a frustration with pundits and social
networking tools...
11/10/2003 11:07 PMI have to say, I'm vaguely appalled by the way that some people
have become so obsessed by social networking services. Business 2.0 is
the most recent drunken advocate to go all giddy about them,
describing them as "technology of the year" (according to Many to
Many). It's like social software all over again - a vaguely useful
concept/service with relatively intriguing possibilities emerges and
gestures in roughly the right direction and all the pundits get caught
up in the immediacy - the nowness of the thing rather than
looking at the past (the millions of mailing lists, message-boards,
instant messenger accounts, the bulletin boards, the MUDs and MOOs) or
the possible futures that actually start hybridising these bits of
technology together in more interesting and useful ways. And before
anyone starts - yes, I know, it happened with weblogs too... And
just like weblogs social networking tools are genuinely
interesting and useful, just not in the trivial, money-grabbing,
tedious, company-based and inflated way that many of these pundits /
press seem to think.
Let me say this one more time. Friendster is interesting!
Friendster is cool! Ryze is interesting! Ryze is even vaguely useful!
But the functionality that these sites are based around has to be a
component of something larger. The social-networking chunk will either
go open-source, API or it'll just start being built into other types
of community site. The sites that exist at the moment only have value
because of the volume of people who have registered on them - without
that volume they're the social software equivalent of the world's most
successful, well-executed and powerful login page or 'shopping basket'
metaphor. It'll all change when/if someone like Google buys them
(there's not really a whole lot of room for lots of these operating
concurrently if all they do is connect people together in the way
they're doing at the moment, but connect it with something else...)
but in the meantime technology of the year?! Are they mad?!
Flashback twenty years - I think they'd have said the same bloody
thing about the Rubik's Cube...

Frustration Over Microsoft’s Security

01/06/2004 10:41 AMMany I.T. people are simply fed-up with the constant stream of never
ending security problems using Microsoft's Windows products, adding
myself to an ever-growing list of frustrated computer professionals.
Upon returning from a ten-day vacation, and a single security patch
behind, seven out of eleven servers attached to a remote DSL network
were taken over by intruders. Granted I should have had a firewall in
front of these computers, but because of their functionality, I didn't
justify the expense. But still, am I to blame or should Microsoft be
held accountable?
