Deep Impact. For Real.

Deep Impact. For Real.

Deep Impact. For Real. 01/02/2005 02:50 AM

This Summer the guys at NASA get to have a little fun. Sometime this month they'll be launching an unmanned spacecraft called Deep Impact. The craft will travel about 268 million miles, park in a safe spot, and launch the Impactor (sounds like another movie title!) which will collide with Comet Tempel 1 on July 4.

If all goes as planned — they're 99 percent sure it'll work — the Impactor will knock a divot out of Tempel 1, which will help NASA scientists learn more about the composition of comets.

This should be great. The mothership will have a ringside seat for the collision and a bevy of cameras and instruments to send lots of data and some great pictures back to Earth.

I guess I am into domesday scenarios, and think if you are going to spend money to fire a projectile at a comet then why not fire a nuke at it and see what effect that has. Instead they plan on making a mini crater on the comet and looking at the dust. I suppose a nuke would defeat their plan to look at the dust created by the impact. [ZDNet]

Xeni Jardin: A team of National Geographic experts with nothing better to do confirmed the existence of Georgia's monster hog, "Hogzilla."
They also noted the super swine didn't quite live up to the 1,000-pound, 12-foot hype generated when Hogzilla was caught on a farm last summer and photographed hanging from a backhoe. Donning biohazard suits to exhume the behemoth's smelly remains, the experts estimated Hogzilla was probably only 7 1/2 to 8 feet long, and weighed about 800 pounds. The confirmation came in a documentary aired Sunday night on the National Geographic Channel; it will be rebroadcast Wednesday and Saturday.

THE DEEP WEB
http://snipurl.com/78rr

Because search engines skim only the top layers of Web pages, they miss most of what's available on what is called the "deep Web," and there may be as many as 500 billion Web pages hidden from the view of most search engines. Paul Duguid, co-author of "The Social Life of Information," says: "Google searches an index at the first layers of any Web site it goes to, and as you delve beneath the surface, it starts to miss stuff. When you go deeper, the number of pages just becomes absolutely mind-boggling." Librarians are now working with Google and other search engines to solve that problem. Daniel Greenstein of the University of California's California Digital Library, the digital branch of the University of California notes: "If you could use Google to just look across digital libraries, into any digital library collection, now that would be cool. It would help libraries achieve something that we haven't yet been able to achieve by ourselves, which is to place all of our publicly accessible digital library collections in a common pool."
