In the aftermath of the tsunamis that devastated Asia in late December 2004, observers pointed out that lack of official, credible information gave victims and governments in the area little prior warning of the impending disaster. Although still in the developmental stages, a partnership of the Global Disaster Information Network (GDIN) and the Organsation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is creating an information system that may significantly reduce the impact of future natural and manmade disasters. Native American Pueblo and Navajo Nations in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado are providing pilot sites for the GDIN system. [PRWEB Jan 5, 2005]

RSS - slowly, surely, everywhere

RSS - slowly, surely, everywhere 09/14/2004 07:26 AM
RSS - Really Simple Syndication (or Rich Site Summary, depending on who you talk to) seems to be making new interesting conquests: First, Apple tells that the next version of Safari has a built-in RSS reader. Today, Mozilla Foundation releases Mozilla Firebird 1.0PR, which also includes a built-in RSS and Atom reader.

And through Kauppalehti, we learn that Ortikon Interactive has developed an RSS browser for digital TV. Now you can read many news sources and almost all weblogs in the world from the comfort of your own couch... Isn't the next logical application of this to combine this kind of a service with BitTorrent, and get something like Torrentocracy - and abolish TV channels completely?

This is by the way the reason why I think that Atom should be considered primarily as a content-delivery channel, and not a "standard for publishing weblogs". People know how bad I am at predicting, but my guess is that measured by volume, in two years most content transported through syndication standards (like RSS and Atom) will be non-weblog. While blogging is important, it cannot match the sheer volume of corporate-created content services. There's money to be made in syndication - go get it, folks!

As You Slowly Slip Into Madness

As You Slowly Slip Into Madness 08/05/2004 12:30 PM
I don't have any kids myself. But I do have six nieces and nephews under the age of four. How that happened was all my bothers and sisters decided pretty much at the same time to move back to Texas and start breeding. Kind of like salmon. It made Christmas last year very interesting. There were babies everywhere -- on the rug, in the cupboards, swinging from the chandelier. Being the unmarried crazy uncle sitting in the corner, I got to watch all this happen. I discovered a few things about kids that I didn't know before.

Putting the pieces back together, slowly

Putting the pieces back together, slowly 01/02/2005 04:41 AM
It's been a long strange trip since the election, and I haven't felt much like writing, and recent developments in my life haven't left me much time to write, hence the two month silence. I worked in campaign mode for the month leading up to the election, as part of a fabulous team that Dan Robinson and Henri Poole of CivicActions put together to do online support of Get Out The Vote efforts using AdvoKit! While we had our ups and downs, the biggest down of course being the election results, it was a great experience. I helped build sites like Rock the Vote, Vote All Your Values, Voter Call, and I supported some great kids on Zephyr Teachout's Baobabs Teams in their use of AdvoKit! I was putting in 16 to 20 hour days doing everything from project management to Apache configuration to writing documentation for AdvoKit, and I loved it. It was at least moderately effective as well, 15,000 people registered to use our sites and they recorded more than 110,000 phone calls to newly registered voters in battleground states, which research shows should add up to at least 11,000 additional voters going to the polls and voting against Bush. Of course, it wasn't enough. In spite of massive efforts by groups on the left, we were out-organized by the Republican GOTV operation, as detailed in a recent Washington Post article, and the American people elected as president of the United States a man who condones torture, is borrowing money in our children's name to fund tax breaks for his friends and war on his father's enemies, and who is raping the environment. As you may be able to tell, I took the election hard, which was another reason not to write. Many of my thoughts I am just as happy not to have preserved for posterity. I found consolation in the support of my wonderful family, including a beautifully written note from my conservative father (and Bush 41 government appointee) thanking me and my sister for our efforts to defeat George W. Bush, in the great friends I made working with CivicActions, and the fact that I can at least say, I did my best to elect John Kerry as president of the United States. But great as they are, the consolations make a thin bowl of gruel to subsist on during 4 more years of...

Slowly losing the spam battle

Slowly losing the spam battle 06/22/2004 03:33 PM
There was a time when I spent all day on my computer. Actually there was a lot of time like that, like pretty much all the time from 1995 until May 21, 2004. And that meant that I had time to go through my email as it arrived, more or less in real time. As the amount of spam I received increased, it became more annoying to go through mail, but it was manageable. I use a combination system, with Spam Assasin as the first line of defense. If it makes it past Spam Assasin and it's from a mailing list, it goes into the appropriate folder. If it's addressed directly to me *and* the sender's address is in my address book, it goes into my Inbox. All else get shuttled into a folder called Suspect. It used to be that I'd keep my eye on Suspect throughout the day, deleting bad stuff, moving legitimate emails from strangers into my Inbox. But now I'm rarely online for more than ~30 minutes a day. Some days I'm not online at all. And so my Suspect mail folder has grown from 1,000 messages to 3,000 to 5,000 to its current tally of 7,990 unread messages. Even if I manage to go through 500 in a day, by the next day I've downloaded hundreds more. I am losing the battle, and I admit defeat. The spammers have won. I've created a new mailing address specifically for readers of the site to use to contact me. It's available on the contact page. If you need to reach me, please use that, as I'll be sorting that from now on into a different folder. And if you sent something and you haven't gotten a response -- and you're not likely to be in my address book -- you might want to resend. The chance of me getting through 8,000 unread mostly spam messages any time this year is slim to none.

Car Dealers Slowly Understanding What
The Internet Means
06/11/2004 12:55 PM
Last time I bought a car, I went through Car Buying Tips in great detail and ended up getting a price well below invoice and significantly lower than what Edmund's called the "true market value" - which they claim is what you should pay. Best of all, the process went very quickly when dealing with the dealer (mostly via the internet) - because I was informed and didn't need to be bothered with various tricks. While I may not have brought in as much money directly from the car, I also didn't waste their time. It appears that more car dealers are beginning to recognize that the informed customer isn't always a bad customer. They're willing to pay a reasonable price and they don't need to be worked on for wasteful hours. What's most amusing about this article, though, is that there are now two types of dealers. The showroom dealers who like finding uninformed suckers and pushing the hard sell on them for hours at a time, and those who prefer to just get hot leads off the internet, sell more cars, and make more commissions (often based on number of vehicles sold - and not for how much).

Tech IPOs Slowly Coming Back

Tech IPOs Slowly Coming Back 11/11/2003 11:37 AM
We've been joking recently about all the parallels between what's happening today and what happened early on in the bubble years, to point out that we're heading right back into where things left off. Of course, there are some major differences. While tech companies are (slowly, slowly) starting to go public again, this time it looks like their financials are a lot more sound. We're not seeing the same sort of wildly speculative IPOs where companies who are nowhere near making a profit are cashing in for millions in IPO money (which often seems to make them forget that a company actually needs to make money from customers, and not just from Wall Street). Of course, many people would add a big "yet" to that statement. Right now, most of the companies going public are profitable (or close to it), but if things heat up again, it wouldn't be surprising to see VCs push out a few more wildly speculative IPOs.
