The Trojan dragon
The Trojan dragon
08/30/2004 10:32 AMSunday’s United for Peace and Justice march had been progressing
peacefully (if noisily and enthusiastically) up Seventh Avenue in
Manhattan for almost four hours when a green paper dragon float came
to a standstill on the east side of the street, directly across from a
giant FOX News Billboard ("America's Newsroom") and just in front of a
McDonald's restaurant. The base of the float was hung with paper
banners with anti-corporate messages, behind which figures could be
seen scurrying about, bent almost double so as not to be spotted.
Suddenly, about 20 people, mostly young men, started spilling out of
the belly of the dragon and running north. They were dressed all in
black, and were wearing bandanas over their mouths like surgical
masks.

Wi-Fi Threatens Cell Market
Wi-Fi Threatens Cell Market
02/16/2004 02:49 PMThis is a thorough Wall Street Journal article that aptly describes
how Wi-Fi is affecting the cellular market: The crowded cellular
market already has plenty of pressure but Wi-Fi poses a threat from a
voice and data competition perspective. The article cites Dartmouth
College, which has offered students Wi-Fi phones, eliminating the need
for students to use cell phones on campus. Hotspots are also
threatening cellular operators' plans for delivering wireless data
services. Apparently Nextel has confirmed that it is interested in
dual-mode phones that would operate on cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
I'll be very interested to watch how cellular operators approach the
idea as I still think it will be difficult for them to rationalize
handing off calls onto Wi-Fi networks that they don't own....

04/13/2005 04:36 AMAn Australian ISP is pulling the plug on users whose computers have
been compromised until they clean up their machines. Telstra Bigpond
has begun disconnecting users whose computers had been infected.
"Customers with suspected compromised PCs are being contacted
where possible to encourage them to rectify the issue and if necessary
are being disconnected from the network while the issue is
rectified," the ISP said.
Bigpond is Australia's largest ISP, but said that its network was
being so overwhelmed with bogus DNS requested that some customers were
reporting slowdowns in legitmate uses. The ISP said it had also
boosted the capacity of its DNS server.
"Ongoing investigations have identified Trojan-infected customer
PCs as the likely source of the false DNS requests," BigPond
said. "Customers contacted in recent weeks in relation to their
PCs issuing large numbers of false DNS requests have been found to
have PCs infected with various viruses and trojans and lacking network
security."
