Democratic Party party

Democratic Party party 04/27/2004 11:36 AM
Quite an action-packed day yesterday. I did two keynotes, at two separate events. After the second one, I went back to the first event, a gathering of about 125 people who run libraries and museums, because I'm trying to write some stuff about metadata and taxonomies. I learned, for example, that one well-known art museum has had to create over 300 new Dewey Decimal categories for illustrated manuscripts ... and one for astrology. Afterwards, I went to a cocktail party put on by the hosts of the second event. It was quite the power party. I got to chat for...

Roger Ailes on Outfoxed's use of clips (from an interview in Broadcasting & Cable, not available online):
Any news organization that doesn't support our position on copyright is crazy. Next week, we could take a month's worth of video from CNN International and do a documentary "Why does CNN hate America?" You wouldn't even have to do the hatchet job Outfoxed was. You damn well could run it without editing. CNN International, Al-Jazeera and BBC are the same in how they report-mostly that America is wrong and bad. Everybody should stand up and say these people don't have the right to take our product anymore. They don't have a right to take a year's worth of Dan Rather or Ted Koppel and edit it any way they want. It puts journalism at risk.
Notice the strategy: Rally the cartel to protect itself against the critics. And the New York Post:
It's a dangerous precedent. Not just because it so badly twists the truth. Or violates copyright laws. But also because it sets up every news outlet for the same low blow. If The New York Times or CNN approve of this tack, then just wait until someone lifts an early draft of some Times piece or CNN's out-takes. No doubt, a double standard will kick in, and they'll be up in arms. But they'll have been defamed nonetheless. By now, Americans are used to these tricks of the Left — shady tactics for which the film's sponsors, MoveOn.org and George Soros, are notorious. But good people — good journalists — must stand up and deplore this trend. They should let Soros & Co. know that deception and outright theft transcend reasonable discourse.

So the work begins....

So the work begins.... 09/06/2004 03:35 AM

We did an IRC chat last night (my time) for the OpenMedia project.

Here's the beginnings of those efforts - An XSPF-based schema for OpenMedia playlists from Lucas Gonze.

Now I gotta go figure out what's XSPF (something tells me it has something to do with Kevin Marks) and how this works with all the OTHER playlist formats out there.

There's nothing I hate more - than redeundant work, overlapping cofusions and tech politics in general. That seems to take up most of my time.

Like yet another digital ID format - from Atom.

Ugh.

Anyway - thanks to Lucas for this - it's great getting this effort started. Maybe we should call it ourMedia.org instead.

What do you think?

We couldn't really nail down the other domain.

Begins with L, ends in U 03/14/2005 06:01 PM

it was an ABBA song...

« Does every office party come equipped with a portable disco ball and ABBA tunes at the ready? I was drunk on 2 ciders by 7pm and I'm surprised I could hold the Leica steady, especially since I was a bit too amused at the choice of music. A modern adaptation/interpretation of the Kalevala could be pretty entertaining in the hands of the right satirist. Väinämöinen in a polyester leisure suit out on the dancefloor.... »

It's Lönnrotin/Kalevalan Päivä again and this year, aside from promising myself that I will read the Kalevala straight through, I will finally learn how to say Lönnrotinkatu without writing it down for the taxi driver who invariably gives me the "where in the fuck?" look or explaining that I'm talking about the street between Bulevardi and Kalevankatu, the one that begins with 'L' and ends in 'u'. I think it is the only street downtown that has L or Lö as the first letter[s]. My life is full of small, insignificant, yet daunting ambitions.
