podcast.wfmu.org. As you probably already know, some broadcast radio

"Two of the music shows (Antique Phonograph Music Program) and
Thomas Edison's Attic consist of DJs hand-cranking old turntables to

How I use FeedDemon to Receive Podcasts
03/24/2005 06:17 PMA couple of months ago I posted about how I
use FeedDemon, and since it was a fairly popular post I thought
I'd share with you how I use FeedDemon 1.5 to receive podcasts
and sync them with my iPod.
In his article Payloads for
RSS, Dave Winer talked about how RSS enclosures were intended to
be downloaded while your computer is inactive (such as in the middle
of the night). FeedDemon certainly supports this idea by enabling you
to schedule your downloads, but I have to confess that I rarely
use this feature anymore. I download only a handful of new podcasts
every day, so I just let each download start right away. And although
FeedDemon enables you to automatically download enclosures for specific feeds, I
seldom use this feature since there aren't many feeds whose podcasts I
always want to hear (in fact, I believe I only have automatic
downloads enabled for my IT
Conversations feed).
Instead, when there's a podcast I might want to listen to, I simply
cick the enclosure icon to add it to my FeedStation download queue. I also make use of the fact that
I can drag-and-drop a media link onto FeedStation to add it to the
download queue. Chances are that most FeedDemon users don't know
about that feature, but it's extremely handy - I regularly find myself
drag-and-dropping MP3 links from Firefox onto FeedStation (note that
this works from IE as well).
I generally add podcasts to my download queue throughout the day,
and I have FeedDemon configured to automatically copy the downloaded podcasts to my iPod (although in the past I
used this feature to copy downloads to my Creative Nomad as well). I
then take my iPod with me the next morning, so that I can listen to
the new podcasts after I drop off my kids at school.

Podcasts"
ANN: FeedStation 1.6 Beta and "My
Podcasts"
06/24/2005 03:36 PM
Today we announced
a new beta version of FeedStation, which until now
has strictly been FeedDemon's podcast client. As of today, FeedStation
supports NewsGator
Online, our free web-based aggregator, and it will soon be
supported by NewsGator Outlook
Edition.
Using FeedStation 1.6 with NewsGator Online
If you're a NewsGator Online user, you may have noticed this
innocent looking folder hanging out under your clippings:

This new "My Podcasts" folder is where you store podcasts you want to
listen to. Getting podcasts into this folder is easy - just click the
new "Add to Podcasts" icon that appears below any item that contains
an enclosu
re, like the one shown below:

Starting with the new beta, FeedStation will (optionally) poll your
My Podcasts folder for new podcasts and automatically download them to
your iPod or Windows Media Player device. Geek that I am, I love the
idea that you can add to My Podcasts on one computer and have
FeedStation on another computer, copying stuff to your iPod for
you.
If you're new to FeedStation - or the whole podcasting thing in
general - you'd probably like a little help getting started. The
first thing you'll need is a set of feeds that contain podcast
enclosures. If you're logged into NewsGator Online, just click the
link below to import an OPML file containing several podcast
feeds:
http://www.bradsoft.co
m/feeds/opml/Podcasters.opml
The first time you run FeedStation after downloading
it, it will ask for your NewsGator Online user name and password
and automatically enable the My Podcasts integration for you.
However, you'll need to let FeedStation know which media player you
want the podcasts copied to - to do this, select Tools > Options,
then switch to the Podcasts tab. This page on my site provides the rest of the details.
Using FeedStation 1.6 with FeedDemon
If you're a FeedDemon user, upgrading the bundled
copy of FeedStation to the new beta version is easy - just download and
install it, and it will replace your existing version. Although you
can click "Skip" on the welcome screen to use FeedStation without a
NewsGator Online account, you'll obviously need an account if you want
to try the My Podcasts integration. As promised in last
month's announcement, you'll get a free two-year business standard
subscription - but I'm afraid we're still working on making this
quick and easy for you (sorry it's taking so long, folks - shouldn't
be much longer now). So, for now, you can simply sign up for a free consumer standard
plan, then we'll switch you over to the free business plan once
it's available.
Giving Due Credit
For almost a decade now I've been used to announcing things that I
created by myself, but this time I'm announcing something that
involved several of my NewsGator co-workers. So I'd like to
acknowledge the late nights of development work by Darryl Dreiling and
Doug Furcht, QA work by Katriana Hutchison and Ria Kaur, and oversight
by Ed Jukkola that was required to make this happen. Nice job, folks
:)
Update: Here's
Greg Reinacker's post about the new FeedStation.

04/14/2005 01:11 PMTVEyes, a real-time broadcast search provider, will debut Podscope
later this month, making every word within an Internet podcast

Podscope will crawl the web to look for podcasts. When it finds one,
it will create an index against every word within the content. Users
will be able to search for a term or phrase and the program will
generate a list of ranked results, providing the most relevant
podcasts as well as links to play or download the content. TVEyes has
been indexing both radio and television broadcasts since 1999.
Podcasts are essentially downloadable radio programs distributed

Know what you're listening to
12/02/2003 01:23 AMIt's becoming increasingly difficult to know exactly what it is you're
listening to on the radio now that DJs almost never announce the names
of the songs they're playing (though, there are a few different
services that can help, like Shazam, which sadly isn't out here yet,
not to mention satellite radio, which usually includes track
information). Anyway, if you want to be able to look at your radio and
know exactly what it is that's playing, there's a new tabletop
radio/CD player from Cambridge SoundWorks called the SoundWorks Radio
CD 740 which uses Radio Data Service information to display the song
title and artist of whatever it is your listening to on the radio.
Almost certainly something that is going to start showing up in more
and more radios. Read [Thanks, Kit]...

05/31/2004 01:15 AMPerhaps here's something the brand new iPod division in Apple can
ponder on... invent a headphone / earphone that is aware when the user

This is so that the iPod / iTunes /

user has removed the headphone from the ears, and can proceed to pause
the current tune / audiobook / broadcast for the user.

The world is now waiting for Apple to invent a new
headphone which can detect whether you are listening to your tunes.
Imagine: you are grooving to your iPod, a phone ring, you pull out
the headphone from your ears to attend to the phone, and the music
automatically pauses. After the phonecall, you put back the headphone,
and the music automatically re-start from where you left off. Cool,
isn't it?
Listening
Listening
12/06/2003 04:32 PMI’ve written before about how listening is the most important
skill a software developer can have.
One part of listening is the art of listening to feature requests.
Sometimes you get a feature request that describes a problem and
proposes a solution that’s right on the mark: all you have to do
is implement it. Sometimes you get a feature request that’s just
about right, and with a little modification and back-and-forth you end
up with the right thing.
And other times you get feature requests that describe a problem but
propose a solution that’s not right. So the art here is
listening to the problem. Sometimes it’s not always plain, you
have to figure it out (often by asking questions of the person who
made the request).
For example: think about how Exposé must have come about. Users
made requests about ways to find a given window easily when you have a
bunch of windows open. I imagine people suggested solutions like a
system-wide window menu.
But what Apple did in this case was listen to the problem rather than
specific solutions, and they came up with a solution that probably
nobody had asked for—but that works wonderfully (and that, as a
bonus, delights people who use it).
Not every feature request will be solved so dazzlingly. Most requests
are for small problems with simple solutions. But it’s worth
keeping Exposé in mind as an example of the art of listening.

04/11/2005 10:16 AMTVEyes, a search

Podscope, which they
bill as "the first engine to search within a Podcast." TVEyes'
Podscope enables the audio indexing of podcast content thus making
every word within a podcast searchable. TVEyes crawls the web with
Podscope looking for podcasts and creates an index against every word,
thereby making the contents searchable. The user can search on a term,
generate a list of results ranked by a variety of methods to find the
most relevant podcast and click to play or click to download. So speak
clearly, podcasters -- Podscope will be available later this month.

I'm sitting in building 33 waiting for the Bill Gates keynote to
start, listening to the chatter. A guy behind me is asked whether
he'll make the investment in VSTO 2005. He's on the fence. "I've been
doing a lot of the stuff you see here for years in VB," he says. "And
there's no upgrade from VSTO 2003 to VSTO 2005 -- you have to buy it
all over again." Stilll, he appreciates the productivity gains as as
you climb the VBA -> VSTO 2003 -> VSTO 2005 ladder. He'd like to
convince his money people to write the check, but isn't sure they
will. And then he makes this interesting point: "With the VB solution,
if somebody changed one cell they'd break you," he says. "Now the tool
insulates you from those changes."

12/02/2003 12:36 AMPaul Gilster writes about the problem of audiences at events with

backdrop much like a white-noise generator. You speak, and a constant
barrage of tippity tap tap clack clickety clack echoes in the
background. It's not symmetrical: at times, people listen and the
