The Grid unites servers and storage into a single system that acts as a single computer - all your applications tap into all your computing power. Hardware resources are fully utilized and spikes in demand are met with ease. This Web site sponsored by Oracle brings you the resources you need to evaluate your organization's adoption of grid technologies. The Grid is ready when you are.

This week at WinHEC, Microsoft talked plenty about Windows client's 64-bit future. But on the last day of its week-long confab, company execs had some interesting things to say about the impact of 64-bit on Windows Server. Microsoft talked about Server 2003 SP1, Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and even a bit about Longhorn Server. And developers talked about the other missing piece: the R2 interim Windows release expected next year.

Given the upcoming new year, I figure it's a good time to share what my crystal ball is telling me. The year 2004 will be exciting for technologists. Pressure has been building in several areas that are poised to really cook next year. Here's my brief take on each of them. Search: Personalization and Relevance Let's face it, PageRank is Dead. Really. I've said it once and I'll say it again. Google knows this. Microsoft knows this. Anyone seriously into...

What Is Grid Computing, Anyway?

What Is Grid Computing, Anyway? 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
One good way to gauge a new technology's degree of acceptance is to observe whether it has moved out of the laboratory and onto store shelves -- from science to commerce. According to that measure, grid computing is just coming of age.

Grid Computing: The Next Push

Grid Computing: The Next Push 01/07/2004 02:55 PM
Grid Computing is, according to the Grid Information Centre, a way to "...enable the sharing, selection, and aggregation of a wide variety of geographically distributed computational resources." It is, in other words, an attempt to make Sun's famous pronouncement "The Network Is The Computer" an even more workable proposition. (It is also an instantiation of several of the patterns of decentralization that used to travel together under the name peer-to-peer.)

Despite the potential generality of the Grid, most of the public pronouncements are focusing on the use of Grids for supercomputing. IBM defines it more narrowly: Grid Computing is "... applying resources from many computers in a network-at the same time-to a single problem", and the MIT Technology Review equated Grid technology with supercomputing on tap when it named Grids one of "Ten Technologies That Will Change the World."

This view is wrong. Supercomputing on tap won't live up to to this change-the-world billing, because computation isn't a terribly important part of what people do with computers. This is a lesson we learned with PCs, and it looks like we will be relearning it with Grids. - More at http://www.shirky.com/writings/grids.html

Giving away services for free can be a great way to drum up business. Especially when the services aren't particularly cheap. (Must. Resist. Urge to plug Techdirt Corporate Intelligence... oh well.) So to encourage growth in the grid computing market, IBM is starting to offer FREE grid computing. Hopefully, we'll get more folding@home-like projects, or maybe just cooler-looking movies from grid render farms.

Writing Off Grid Computing Already

Writing Off Grid Computing Already 06/11/2004 03:43 AM
Grid computing, as you may have heard, is supposed to be the next big thing. IBM, HP and Sun are all making huge efforts to try to turn your computing usage into a utility where you pay for exactly what you use. While they've been talking about it for a while, many of the pieces are finally falling into place and already some are calling it dead on arrival. It's true that the companies involved clearly are overhyping the potential of grid/utility/distributed computing, but it still seems a little early to call it dead. It won't be perfect for everyone, but some companies will find it useful for certain applications. That shift, though, won't happen overnight.

Apple's Xgrid software, announced at Macworld earlier this month, turns a group of Macintosh computers into a supercomputer that's "as easy as Macintosh" to manage, according to the computer maker. But even Apple's famously easy-to-use software can't get around one of the stickiest parts of parallel computing on commodity clusters.
