Enterprise Wiki
06/17/2005 07:16 PM
Atlassian Software Systems today announced Confluence 1.4, the latest release of their enterprise wiki. With over 50 fresh new features, this release offers a vastly improved user interface, page level permissioning, stronger customisability, more built in macros, 'upload-and-go' plug-in support and much more. By allowing users to collaborate through the ability to quickly create, search and store content, wikis are quickly becoming many organisations answer to the search for a practical and usable knowledge management solution. The 400 plus organisations using Confluence are very much a testament to the growing prominence of the wiki in the corporate environment. [PRWEB Jun 9, 2005]

It's the Wiki Wiki thing 02/01/2005 09:19 PM

What happens when you 1) were thinking about stupid songs that you can't get out of your head, 2) are listening to the audio of Jimmy Wales talking about Wikipedia in Boston (audio and text transcripts here), 3) are chatting to wikipedians on IRC and 4) happen to have Garage Band open? This (800K mp3 / 870K ogg).

PS I would like to add that many wikipedians contributed links, sounds and feedback in the creation of this piece. It's amazing what you can do as a community. ;-P Just kidding, I can not take credit for the entire work, but I have no one to blame but myself.

UPDATE: Eric Haller just cleaned it up for me and now it sounds much better. 963K mp3

What is: WIKI?

It lets readers add and edit Web site content and may be a useful tool for companies. Here's how to get started.

Wiki as MOO

Wiki as MOO 01/07/2004 04:39 PM

Wiki is a MOO.  A wiki page is a MOO room.  WikiWords are doors.  Some changes to a wiki page are like conversations within a room, others are like writings on the wall or part of the room's description.

Is it helpful to divide a wiki page into two sections (i.e. moderated top half and unmoderated bottom half)?  What about using passage of time to distinguish conversations from yesterday and today.  Will a calendar on a side like blogs help?  At least sense of time seem more intuitive than versions.

An actually useful wiki

An actually useful wiki 08/29/2004 03:53 PM

Merlin showed me Instiki and it looks great, works intuitively (using various text plugins instead of just typical wiki stuff), and the desktop Mac OS X one is the easiest to install wiki I've used. You download the disk image, double-click, and it's running locally, accessible from the menu bar at all times.

Last week I got into the habit of launching it and using it instead of having a BBEdit todo.txt file on my desktop. As a private scratchpad, it's absolutely fantastic. Over the past few days I've built out my ToDos into a pile of organized, hyperlinked pages that are useful to have around.

Now I wish I could mark some stuff as non-private/local and have it upstream to a public web server to share with others (like a "hey friends, check out these ideas for an upcoming trip" list I might have sitting here).

How to run a wiki

How to run a wiki 02/10/2004 10:32 PM
Sam Ruby had a wonderful talk about the lessons learned from the Atom Wiki. He formulated something I would like to nominate as the "Ruby's Law":

In any project, for any given number of opinions of the technical questions, there is a larger number of opinions on how the project should be named – or on the process how name should be chosen.

It's so true.

There was also a highly interesting discussion afterwards about Wiki visualization and navigation, which in my opinion are the questions we should focus on, rather than thinking about issues with WikiMarkup? transferability. Wikis would allow wonderful navigational tools - I know JSPWiki instances where the CSS for the site is available as a WikiPage?, allowing anyone to change the visual look of the site. But why not also extend the same concept to the physical HTML layout of the site?

Of course, you might want to limit it to only certain people, as recovering from WikiTrolls? would be nigh impossible, but still... The power of the Wikis lies in the separation of content and presentation: in fact, the JSPWiki internals are looking more and more like a database engine day by day, and some people are seriously suggesting a SQL-like query language embeddedable in the pages. So, we can do all this wonderful stuff with the content - but we still have to resort to editing HTML if we want to change the presentation. Why?

VoodooPad gets an XML-RPC wiki API

VoodooPad gets an XML-RPC wiki API 11/18/2003 09:02 PM
You wanted to share the same documents with your coworkers and friends. Now you can. With VoodooPad 1.1, you can view, edit, and save to any wiki that supports the 'vpwiki api'.

Funny, I’ve been tinkering with a wiki API along with a few others tinkerers for a year or so now. I wonder if we could get these APIs merged or synched and give VoodooPad access to a slew of wikiware?
