Latency

Latency 07/08/2004 02:09 AM
[For Java/networking geeks only.] I have these two Java programs, talking through an ordinary TCP/IP socket. The client sends a (medium-sized) serialized object to the server, which does a little bit of computation and acknowledges by sending a (small) object back. Straight writeObject()/readObject() calls with setTcpNoDelay(true) in effect. When both of them are running on my 1.25Ghz PowerBook here, the latency required for the whole transaction is like 190msec, which is horrible. So I moved the server code down to the mouldy old P300 Debian box in the basement, talking to it over two or three legs of WiFi and Ethernet switches, and the latency dropped to around 33msec; still not great, but the difference is instructive.

Does RAM Latency Matter?

Does RAM Latency Matter? 08/19/2004 02:35 PM
Deep Tech: Memory manufacturers continue to sell faster and faster RAM, often touting lower latency as a major selling point. Does this more expensive RAM actually improve system performance?

Top Tip: Help with memory latency!

Ok, I have been reading lots about the latency of memory and timings, but I am severly cornfuzed. I know that smaller is better (I wish my ex-wife felt that way!) when it comes to CAS. My " dream " board (on another thread) is an Epox board using (or requiring I should say) DDR SDRAM PC3200.

Realizing that the entertainment industry has gone too far with their misuse of the DMCA, a number of big tech companies and organizations have teamed up to support Rick Boucher's revision of the DMCA designed to get rid of its most ridiculous parts. It's good to see the industry finally get together and make a concerted effort to fight back against Hollywood, pointing out that the DMCA is doing more damage to the economy than it's "protecting".

Tech and Hollywood heavyweights create
content coalition
07/14/2004 10:00 AM
From John Borland at CNET:
Several high-profile technology companies and movie studios are expected to announce Wednesday that they have formed a coalition to ensure that high-definition video and other content cannot be pirated in home networks.

Sources familiar with the group's formation said the initial members include IBM, Intel, Sony, Microsoft, Warner Bros., Disney and Panasonic. The announcement is scheduled to be made at the cross-industry Content Protection Technology Working Group (CPTWG) meeting in Los Angeles, although last-minute membership changes could occur before then.

The alliance marks the culmination of years of tentative and often suspicious contact between the high-tech industry and Hollywood. It will be aimed at developing specifications to protect copyrighted content such as movies inside home networks. If the group is successful, a consumer might be able to download a high-definition movie, store it on a PC, watch it on a television and transfer it to a mobile device to watch while traveling.

UK Web Archiving Consortium

UK Web Archiving Consortium 09/14/2004 05:36 AM
UK Web Archiving Consortium
http://www.webarchive.org.uk/

For many, the web has become the information source of first resort. From keeping abreast of latest news and accessing online journals and datasets, through to finding information about travel and sport, the web has become the information tool of choice. However, despite our apparent dependence on this medium very little attention has been paid to the long-term preservation of websites. Indeed, with the life of an average website estimated to be around 44 days (about the same lifespan as a housefly) there is a danger that invaluable scholarly, cultural and scientific resources will be lost to future generations. To address this problem, a consortium of six leading UK institutions is working collaboratively on a project to develop a test-bed for selective archiving of UK websites. Using PANDAS software, developed by the National Library of Australia, consortium members will archive sites (once appropriate permissions have been obtained from website owners) relevant to their interests. For example, the Wellcome Library will focus on collecting medical sites, whilst the National Library of Wales will collect sites that reflect life in contemporary Wales. The British Library will focus on sites of cultural, historical and political importance. Once sites have been archived, catalogued and checked for completeness, they will be made accessible through this website. Users will be able to browse the archive – using broad subject headings – or search for specific sites and topics. This has been added t6o Deep Web Research Subject Tracer Information Blog.
