Super-correcting DVD players make
pirated discs watchable
08/12/2004 11:21 AMJiangsu Shinco Electronic Group is a Chinese company that manufactures
"super-correcting" DVD players that automatically correct for the low
quality of pirated DVD discs (though the article doesn't say whether
this corrects for bad pressing or bad recordings, I suspect it's the
former). They get some of their parts from Sony!
Enter the caoqiang jiuchuo or "super-correcting" Chinese model of DVD
player. Developed by the Jiangsu Shinco Electronic Group and selling
for about half the cost of brands such as Philips and Sony, it is
designed to cope with the poor quality of pirated video discs.
Along with half a dozen domestic brands that have followed its lead,
the company's Shinco brand has grabbed about 80 per cent of the
Chinese market. Its factories produce 5 million DVD players a year,
and, says Zeng Ming, a management expert who has studied the company,
its annual sales are about $US1 billion ($1.35 billion).

Companies agree to develop super fast 3G
standard
01/03/2005 08:01 PMAn agreement to develop an advanced mobile phone standard capable of
sending high-resolution video in an instant has been reached between
leading wireless carriers and telecoms equipment makers.
CNN reports that a group of 26 companies, including Britain's Vodafone
Group Plc, Germany's Siemens AG, France's Alcatel and Japan's NEC
Corp. and DoCoMo, will support the standard. Mobile phone services
based on the technology will offer transmission speeds more than 10
times as fast as the current third-generation (3G) service.
Basic technological specifications will be compiled by 2007 but no
date has been set for a commercial launch, a DoCoMo spokesman said.

[This is an edited version of the talk I gave last fall at the
State of Play
conference.]
I'm sort of odd-man-out in a Games and Law conference, in that my
primary area of inquiry isn't games but social software. Not only am I
not a lawyer, I don't even spend most of my time thinking about game
problems. I spend my time thinking about software that supports group
interaction across a fairly wide range of social patterns.
So, instead of working from case law out, which has been a theme here
(and here's where I insert the "I am not a lawyer" disclaimer) I'm
going to propose a thought experiment looking from the outside in.
And I want to pick up on something that Julian [Dibbell] said earlier
about game worlds: 'users are the state.' The thought experiment I
want to propose is to agree with that sentiment, and to ask "How far
can we go in that direction?"
Instead of looking for the places where game users are currently suing
or fighting one another, forcing the owners of various virtual worlds
to deal with these things one crisis at a time, I want to ask the
question "What would happen if we wanted to build a world where we
maximized the amount of user control? What would that look like?"
I'm going to make that argument in three pieces. First, I'm going to
do a little background on group structure and the tension between the
individual and the group. Then I want to contrast briefly governance
in real and virtual worlds. Finally I want to propose a thought
experiment on placing control of online spaces in the hands of the
users.

Dial [fn] for Exposé
Dial [fn] for Exposé
12/11/2003 04:58 PM
I've just--on the advice of Mac-pal
Duncan--remapped Exposé to
the [fn] key instead of [f9]. This is just the next step in my
logical progression towards an Exposé-driven life. I started
out a "hider", hiding everything but the active app in an effort to
reduce on-screen app clutter. Enter Exposé... I mapped all
four screen corners to All Windows Exposé view. My
multi-button optical mouse's thumb button does the same. And I've
become pretty efficient at reaching across the keyboard to [f9] for
action. Moving that to [fn] brings things closer to home (row).
My favourite hint on selecting apps with Exposé is to use the
Exposé key or button both to spread app thumbnails across the
desktop and to select the one I'm interested in rather than
Exposé button > click, Exposé button > click.

The dial-up mountain retreat
The dial-up mountain retreat
02/01/2005 09:15 PMWith the new year comes new changes and challenges, and for me the
biggest challenge is a return to a dial-up Internet connection. I've
moved to New Hampshire to a wonderful cozy house close to all the
wintry goodness I crave: downhill skiing, ice skating, snow shoeing
(haven't tried this yet but I'm sure I'll like it), and hilly mountain
runs. The setting is idyllic, atop a mountain with our own ski trails
(an old rope tow trail runs alongside our driveway, alas no longer
operational, requiring one to hike back up after a nice schuss down
the slopes) surrounded by tall stands of evergreens and birch trees.
The near-daily snow fall has blanketed the landscape in fluffy white,
while indoors Bodhi and I enjoy the warmth of the wood-burning stove.
And all is peaceful and good, except for the fucking internet
connection.
A return to dial-up after five years of high-speed access is like
forsaking a car for a horse and buggy. It's maddeningly slow and
impossible to adapt to when you know you could be getting there
faster! Added to that is my ISPs propensity to drop my connection
while I'm in the middle of downloading, and I think I may go mad.
When contemplating the move, I had grand dreams of spending less time
online and spending more reading and connecting with the "real world."
But what I've discovered so far is that dial-up doesn't mean I'm
online less. It pretty much means I'm not online at all. I just
connect to download email (which takes anywhere from 30-45 minutes,
twice a day) and then I'm off. I can't really do anything else online
while I'm downloading email or it takes even longer to get the mail,
and by the time I'm done, I've got some phone call to make or errand
to run and off I go. Some people choose to be Luddites, others have
Ludditity thrust upon them.
