This is one of the smartest moves that iRiver has made in a very long time. No longer will you by default have to use their proprietary application to get media onto the device. An upgrade has been issued for the Linux kernel to address two security flaws identified as serious. Marcelo Tosatti, who maintains the Linux 2.4 kernel series, said the security vulnerabilities of the older version pose significant risks to users and they should upgrade to the new kernel as soon as possible. One of the flaws fixed by the new kernel allows a hacker to change the privileges of a user account to those of the system's owner; the other flaw exposes some of the kernel's memory to intruders. Improvements to the 2.4 series kernel have otherwise been halted in an effort to encourage users to upgrade to the next series, the 2.6 kernel.

Manipulation technique found in the Diebold central tabulator -- 1,000 of these systems are in place, and they count up to two million votes at a time. By entering a 2-digit code in a hidden location, a second set of votes is created. This set of votes can be changed, so that it no longer matches the correct votes. The voting system will then read the totals from the bogus vote set. It takes only seconds to change the votes, and to date not a single location in the U.S. has implemented security measures to fully mitigate the risks.

If this is true, it's perhaps the worst news yet in a saga that is monumentally scary: the prospect that voting machines aren't just flawed, but perhaps open to direct tampering. No one should trust Diebold to begin with, given its woeful security record, a track record that should have disqualified it entirely from selling voting machines. But if this is proved out -- and where are the authorities, anyway? -- it ought to be the last straw.
