Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?

Are Speakerphone Mobile Calls Less
Annoying Than Regular Calls?
04/21/2004 03:53 PM
Last week we noted a new study saying that people get annoyed with others talking on mobile phones because they only hear one half of the conversation. At the time, I wrote that this made sense as periods of silence followed by talking are a lot more jarring to the passive listener. However, this BBC report claims that the reason for the annoyance is that it shows that we're more curious about what the other party is saying. I'm not sure I buy that. It seems much more likely that it's the variability in noise, from silent to noisy rather than any form of curiosity. When the conversation is at a constant hum (even when loud), it's much easier to tune it out. Still, the findings do go against the opinion many people have expressed that things like "push-to-talk" where the phone usually acts as a speaker phone would be more annoying since we get to hear both sides of the conversation. In fact, the researchers behind the study are even suggesting that mobile phone makers may want to explore adding speaker phones to more phones to make them less annoying. Of course, the study only set up two conditions: a conversation on a mobile phone and a face-to-face conversation. They didn't test the speaker phone situation to see how annoying that was. It's possible that the annoyance factor comes from the inability to make use of body language to express concepts as well, leading to a different tone of voice.

STN International - Databases in Science and Technology
http://www.stn-international.d e/

Knowledge is the most important resource in high-tech countries. For research and development, for the daily scientific work, appropriate information – comprehensive and easily accessible – is a fundamental prerequisite. The direct route to scientific information leads via STN International, The Scientific & Technical Information Network. This network is operated cooperatively by FIZ Karlsruhe, the American Chemical Society (ACS), and The Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JST). Service Centers in Karlsruhe, Columbus and Tokyo are linked by sea cable (TAT8). Thus, the users have access to one worldwide information service with up-to-date databases in science and echnology. The STN centers have many years of experience in the field of scientific information. With these three scientific organizations in Europe, Japan and the U.S., STN provides an international service for the scientific community and has become, since its start 15 years ago the leading information network for science and technology. Good stuff to localize ads and content, thanks for the link, Heiko, and happy new year to you.

You have been wondering how Google knows your local language and targets advertising accordingly? Try the IP Address Locator and you will know, too. Which in turn makes me wonder why Yahoo! still does not get it.

Marc's two cents....

The Internationalization of the web (and the computer world in general) is a big thing to me.  Not only does that mean having languages other than English built into the site - but it also means having bodies 'on the ground' as we used to say - local - in the country you expect to make money in - before you can EVER think about selling your products or services there!

Loic understands that.

Orkut goes International 06/20/2004 11:55 PM

So I get this message today.....

Hi Marc,

We've just launched a new feature that allows you to specify the primary language of your community.

Why would you want to do this?

1. So that everyone posts in one language! As orkut.com gains more members from around the world, it makes it easier for you and everyone in your community if people can read each other's posts. This is hard to do if everyone's speaking different languages. 2. So that you can search communities by language. This way, when you're looking for new communities, you'll always find ones that you can read and participate in.

I say - "right on!"

We all need to start thinking more international! I bet this is really gonna make Orkut take off even more. Now if they only had something to do in there.

HHHmmmm - maybe like Gmail, Blogger and Google News.....in the valley of the search.

International Private Law

International Private Law 07/16/2004 06:37 AM
One of the larger and more interesting questions arising in connection with Creative Commons's global expansion is the question of whether the various iCommons licences are internationally compatible. The question arises because porting / transposing the CC licenses into diffferent jurisdictions involves a process of both translation and legal adapation. The latter is made necessary by the specific requirements of the respective national legal orders, e.g. with regard to language used or with regard to the particular limitations created by droit d'auteur copyright regimes. In this context, how can we best make sure the international versions of the CC licenses are compatible with each other? Part of our discussion at the Wissenschaftskolleg conference, held on 17 June in Berlin, focussed precisely on this question. Here you'll find a talk given by Dr A. Metzger for more thoughts on this.
