Crackers Are Faster Than You

Crackers Are Faster Than You 08/18/2004 02:49 PM

Here's a scary statistic that I hadn't considered before: SANS keeps a graph of the amount of time you can have an unprotected PC on the Internet before you get some kind of exploit probe. Since last year, this time has gone from 40-60 minutes down to around 20-30 minutes, which is less time than you usually need to download your service packs and patches for a new install.

The average time between probes will vary widely from network to network. Some of our submitters subscribe to ISPs which block ports commonly used by worms. As a result, these submitters report a much longer 'survival time'. On the other hand, University Networks and users of high speed internet services are frequently targeted with additional scans from malware like bots. If you are connected to such a network, your 'survival time' will be much smaller.

SANS includes a link to a PDF entitled 'Windows XP: Surviving the First Day'. As always, a $60 broadband router/firewall box will deal with most of these problems for you.

Lowe's Crackers Get Nine and Two Years

Lowe's Crackers Get Nine and Two Years 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
Woe be to the highly unsuccessful cracker manques: The fellow who was deemed to have the most responsibility in a quartet that all pleaded guilty was sentenced yesterday to nine years in jail for his role in using a poorly secured Wi-Fi network run by Lowe's to insert credit-card grabbing software into their systems. The judge reduced the potential longer sentence because Brian Salcedo provided information to Lowe's on security problems on their network. Salcedo accomplice Adam Botbyl pleaded guilty to lesser charges and was sentenced today to more than two years in federal prison, somewhat less than expected. Paul Timmins pleaded to a misdemeanor. The article notes he was charged with wardriving, but that's incorrect: wardriving is generally passive. Timmins accessed the network, checking email according to his plea. The reporter writes, In wardriving, hackers search for vulnerable wireless Internet connections. But that's a subset of all wardrivers. Most wardrivers pursue Wi-Fi networks like birders pursue birds; they aren't searching per se for vulnerable networks. Kevin Mitnick was only sentenced to five years, but prosecutors in the Mitnick case demonized him in order to make the case seem larger. He didn't do anything admirable, but he revealed the massive security flaws in many companies social and technical infrastructure. His actual damages--the cost to repair what he did as opposed to the costs to properly secure their own systems--were very small. Another colleague of mine spent several years under probation for proving to Intel when he was a contractor that their password choices were bad. He didn't have their permission nor did he have any intent, but they decided to have him charged. He was obliged to pay the costs of their fixing a problem that he was demonstrating that they needed to fix. In this case, prosecutors estimated that $2.5 million in damages would have been caused if Lowe's didn't uncover the inserted software on their network. The Wi-Fi access wasn't really the point in the case at all, just their means of detected entry....

Hapless Wi-Fi Crackers Head to Pokey

Hapless Wi-Fi Crackers Head to Pokey 06/07/2004 07:00 PM
Crackers who break into Lowe's over-exposed Wi-Fi network start pleading: The first two members of a three-man ring have agreed to plea bargains in a case that revealed how poor Lowe's external wireless LAN security was. While there's no excuse for cracking, Lowe's network allowed them to gain access at several locations, at which point these three allegedly (two have stipulated, one is still alleged) installed credit-card capturing software among other acts. Lowe's security team noticed the activity, monitored it, and worked with police to stage the arrests. Sentencing is yet to come, and the third man will be arraigned later this month. Interestingly, the plea bargain includes their cooperation in explaining what they did. That's surely not useful at this point: eight months after the attacks, you have to hope that Lowe's has completely overhauled every element of their external-facing systems and intrusion detection monitoring....

AirDefense Finds Wi-Fi Planet Riddled
with Insecure Users, Crackers
06/10/2004 04:05 PM
AirDefense monitors traffic as a sponsor at trade show and produces its regular report of horrors: In a press release not yet posted at its site, AirDefense said that in the most recent Wi-Fi Planet conference run by Jupitermedia, which concluded today in Baltimore, they found instances running of new cracker tools. The intrusion monitoring company noted eight devices running Hotspotter, eight running Airsnarf, and 12 soft APs. (They didn't note whether other intrusion monitoring firms might have been running any instances of these packages to demonstrate the flaws, however.) Hotspotter uses a Windows XP (pre-service pack 1, apparently) flaw that allows it to force a Windows XP client to reassociate with a laptop running Hotspotter to scan the computer. Soft APs are access points running on a laptop that can be used to the same effect simply by using names identical to existing networks. Airsnarf automates password extraction on networks to which a computer is connected. The company also found a small host of MAC address spoofs, invalid MAC addresses, and ad hoc networks, while witnessing several denial of service attacks. There was also plenty of unsecured traffic running over the Wi-Fi network among what should have been a fairly sophisticated user base....

Why has the cheese returned?

Why has the cheese returned? 12/06/2003 03:20 PM

A weekend without my beautiful Powerbook means lots of time to sort out my disasterous financial / bill-paying / mounds of paper situation. This - in turn - means that some forms of music television have become an essential part of my life. Which means in turn that I'm being exposed to what seems to me to be a ludicrous excess of Christmas singles. Like dozens of them! Way more than normal. The other day I wrote about the The Darkness' effort but it's far far far from alone. Check out this highly inexhaustive list:

And that's just the ones with explicitly Christmas themes (and doesn't include blatant Christmas-mongering attempts like the Ozzy/Kelly Osbourne atrocity). So I wonder to myself? Why is this Christmas so poptastic? Is there some kind of correlation between the perceived redundancy of the music industry and a prevalence of these cheesy singles? Or does it correlate to anxiety about the state of the world? Or is it a sign of complacency? Or are we all just incredibly naff? Thoughts on a postcard please (and let me know if I've missed any of the little bastards)...

On the subject of cheese...

On the subject of cheese... 12/06/2003 06:42 PM

This may sound like a bit of an advert, but frankly I don't care. You have to be able to express joy in the things you like - I think - whether they be commercial or not. Only let me say that I have received no money or free merchandising for the following glowing endorsement. None at all. Not even the tiniest sliver of perfectly ripe brie...

Every year shortly before Christmas I pop into Neal's Yard Dairy and get a selection of cheeses to take up to my family in Norfolk. It's become a bit of a ritual. There's something really primal and satisfying about bringing food back for a significant meal - particularly one so associated with the winter solstice and the rebirth of the sun (oh and all that Christian stuff I guess). So to do my part, I go into Covent Garden's most well-stocked and sensually stimulating shop, sample a dozen cheeses (they'll let you try everything) and then buy a representative sample.

This sounds more like an advert than I'd feared, but let me continue anyway... The wonderful staff will recommend the Stilton that'll be at its best at exactly the right time, they'll tell you how to store your cheese (FYI: in a cellar or on a window-ledge - not in the fridge because it'll dry it out) and they'll even label each perfectly paper-wrapped block of cheese you buy - so that you can order them again or look them up later in your favourite cheese tome (I bought my father a book of cheese so that he can investigate the whole issue in more detail - I believe it's been a tremendous success). In a nutshell - it's one of the most pleasant experiences of my year and I heartily recommend it. Plug over. Well, nearly...

It occurs to me that this is an ideal topic for a random poll, so here we go: What's your favourite cheese?

Speaking of French cheese

Speaking of French cheese 04/09/2005 07:53 AM
According to this article, French mobilise to save cheeses under threat of extinction France is losing cheeses as producers are dying and taking their cheese making secrets to the grave. A worrisome trend is looming in this country of cheese-lovers, where the nation's rich palette of 1,000 cheeses is being nibbled away at with the annual demise of several varieties..."The Mont-d'Or galette, which had been produced for some 400 years, disappeared this summer following the death of the last producer who knew the secret of how to make it." That does sound worrisome. What's also worrisome is the reference in this article to "National Cheese Day" on "Friday." Did I just miss National Cheese Day?!?! Why weren't there big cheese posters everywhere telling me about this? Sure, they take the time to hang a giant neon sign for the Olympics on the Hôtel de Ville, but why not a giant poster of Brique de Brebis? No wonder a disastrous cheese extinction looms!
