WS-Sanity in Ireland 05/11/2004 11:42 PM
People have asked why, since I joined Sun, I’ve been going on about WS-this and WS-that. In part it’s just because I still care about all things XML. But mostly, it’s because in late 2003, before I came here, I had an eye-opening experience that changed how I think about Service-Oriented Architectures and Web Services. I think that the future is in plain sight, and that’s because it’s being built right now by the Government of Ireland, and it’s called reachservices...

The Value of a Sanity Check

The Value of a Sanity Check 01/16/2004 10:59 AM
A funny thing happened today. Something we can all learn from. In the last week, I've been helping some folks at work do some performance testing and tuning with MySQL. One group's problem seems to be solved. The other, however, was running into pretty poor performance. Today one of them IM'd me (is that a verb now?) with some concern. He was seeing swapping on the machine. And it was really slow. After being interrupted by a few phone calls,...

Check out Nokia Web Services Framework for Devices — a Service-oriented Architecture. It’s a practical intro to how SOA might play in the mobile space, with some eminently sensible background work; there’s a section entitled What is a service-oriented architecture, and why is it good?. Anyone who doesn’t think that the center of gravity of networked computing, which means all computing, is moving toward the mobile space and isn’t reading Russell Beattie and probably should be. As I’ve said before, if you want to know the future of SOAs and Web Services, look at the people who are actually deploying them and see what they’re doing. Anything they’re not going to use, you can ignore for now.

Sanity Checking the Free Market

Sanity Checking the Free Market 11/06/2003 01:50 AM
The most dangerous thing in this world is rampant idealism. When righteousness, even well-informed and well-meaning righteousness, gets out of control it can do infinitely more damage than the most depraved or bacchanalian acts performed by a cynic or moderate. We acknowledge this freely in our every day lives, whether we are considering the dangerous idealism of fundamentalist Islamic organizations in the Middle East, of extremist Christian organizations in the Midwest United States or even, to a lesser extent, of organizations such as Greenpeace, the NRA or the FSF. What we value much more than an idealist with tunnel vision is an intelligent person with a slightly cynical eye who can see the value of the ideals but can also see the many places where an exception might be warranted.

Global darkness shortage poses health
and sanity risk
03/22/2005 05:01 PM
Cory Doctorow: There's a global shortage of darkness, and it's not good for us.
"A number of health and environmental problems are due to a loss of darkness," says Dr David Crawford, executive director of the International Dark-Sky Association, a group that campaigns against light pollution. "And it will get worse as we creep -- or rush -- to a 24/7 world. All of life, all of it, has evolved with a day/night cycle -- the circadian rhythm. It's essential to good health. Many studies are now showing that those who go without a true day/night cycle are adversely impacting their immune systems, and that's not good..."

Once at work, overriding the craving for dark and sleep comes at a price. "They activate the `fight or flight' stress mechanism," says Foster, "and we know that stress in turn can suppress the immune system." Bright lights, caffeine and nicotine artificially maintain stimulation. Perhaps unsurprisingly, studies show that nightshift workers are at increased risk of a range of health problems, from stress, constipation and stomach ulcers to depression, heart disease and cancer. For example, a 2001 study in Seattle, based on interviews with 800 women, found that females who worked the graveyard shift could face a 60 percent increase in the risk of breast cancer.

My German is iffy -- it's mostly really just a funny voice I make -- but I think most of these notebook computer design concepts on PC-Welt are pretty self-explanatory. They don't all look practical (I'm looking at you, strange Klingon-looking battle laptop), but if you like to reminded just how many roll-up screens and interestingly-folded laptops we have (Answer: One million zeros) there's a lot of fun stuff to check out. I've been told the first page is the winner of the competition, while the second page is all the runners-up. (Thanks, Thien!)
