More on the Asus 8100 Pocket PC Phone

More on the Asus 8100 Pocket PC Phone 12/08/2003 11:48 AM
A few weeks ago rumors circulated about the A8100, a Pocket PC Phone from Asus which has a fold down keypad reminiscent of Sony Ericsson's new P900 smartphone. Now Pocket PC Thoughts is reporting that the A8100 should be out in second quarter of next year and cost about $600, though there is still no word on whether it will be a GSM or a CDMA phone or where it might be sold. Two new wireless Pocket PCs from Asus 11/18/2003 12:42 PM
A couple of new Pocket PC from Asus, the MyPal A716, which will have built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, and the MyPal A8100 (pictured at right), a Pocket PC Phone. Besides the WiFi and Bluetooth, the A716 will have a 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and both SD and CompactFlash memory card slots. We're more excited about the A8100, though, which with its fold down keypad looks a bit like Sony Ericsson's new P900 smartphone. No word on when either of these might hit American shores. Read...

Asus A730 Pocket PC: VGA Screen, Nicely
Equipped, Only 100% Down and 0% A Month
06/28/2004 02:43 PM

asus_A730Back.jpg imageBy the end of July we should see a new Pocket PC model from Asus -- at least if the forked tongue of PDABuyer'sGuide can be believed (it can be). The A730 will have a 520MHz Intel PAX 270 processor, 64MB RAM/64MB ROM, and a 3.7-inch transreflective VGA display. Plus, expansion will be hot, with CF and SDIO built-in, but you won't need either to use the built-in Bluetooth or 1.3-megapixel camera. How about USB host, you might ask? How about you have your damned USB host and get out of my face?

The Asus A730 will run Windows Mobile 2003 SE, and should be available in a similarly-spec'd model with WiFi.

Is That a Phone In Your Pocket...

Is That a Phone In Your Pocket... 09/07/2004 03:56 PM

pokia.JPGTired of talking on that tiny cellphone handset that makes your ear sweat and only comes to the back of your jawbone when you hold it to your ear? Nick Poole's Pokia is a crazy bit of retro chic that turns old 70's-style phone handsets into cellphone accessories. His latest creation, for sale on Ebay, is a Bluetooth-enabled version.

This is the my first bluetooth prototype. I've had it working for a few weeks now and works really well. The charger is at the end of the wire which turns out to be pretty useful. The answer button as you can see is on the top of the handset and the indicator light is mounted on the back. The only slight flaw is that you need a matchstick to adjust volume. Works with any bluetooth phone. Comes with charger (uk spec so you might need a converter if buying from outside the uk).

I don't know how much sense it makes for cellphones, but something like this would work great as a computer accessory for services like Skype. Nick has a number of other models, like the DJ Convoy (a set of headphones and a CB radio microphone), and the Hotline, a handset that looks like it fell off the phone that Reagan used to dial Gorbachev with.

The next version of the Pocket PC Phone, known as the XDA II or the MDA II depending on which carrier is offering it, still isn't available here, but it is out in the United Arab Emirates, where it's sold as the "i mate." eten_P300B.jpg imageAnd while we're on the phone tip, PDA Buyer's Guide has reviewed the E-TEN P300B, a compact, if not powerful Pocket PC phone that will be sold under the FutureCom Global brand here in the US. It's not a beast, with a 200MHz processor, although an ample amount of RAM, plus SDIO, but considering the P300B can be purchased unlocked -- can only be purchased unlocked, in fact -- it looks like a decent, fairly cheap option for someone who wants a GSM Pocket PC without being locked into a single carrier.
