Why FOAFnet does not need single sign-on
Why FOAFnet does not need single sign-on
08/03/2004 07:41 PMJulian Bond has written up some ideas on "Extending FOAFnet with
single sign on". I'll spare yah the details.
It's not that I don't dig single sign-on, or the various solutions
like Sxip or SourceID.
It's just that to take baby steps FOAFnet doesn't need to go all the way
into single sign-on. In fact Julian's Ecademy public implementation of FOAF is fine and we've been
using it to test the Tribe.net FOAFnet importer.
But the whole idea of FOAFnet was to start off simple and if we
require single sign-on - we'll be blogging in 2006 taking "coulda
woulda shoulda". The publicly exposed FOAF - that Julian has created
on Ecademy right now - is all we need to achieve FOAFnet
import/export.
Now sure sure (my bad) the coolio advanced feature I REALLY want -
to simplify the whole import process WILL require authentication and
single sign-on - can wait till later. It was my bad that I brought
that up now. So I apologize for that.
But what we'd like to see - RIGHT NOW - is to come up with an v1
implementation - THEN start and focus on the various NEXT STEPS and
issues that should be in our roadmap
- moving forward. Like.....
1. Additional rdf vocabulary - triples, coolio stuff, meta metas
and all that.
2. New kinds of relationships (see Peter Caputa's request) -
certainly at least standardardizing a way to extend relationships
3. Merging FOAf files - so folks like me can update what's already
there
4. Hot linking, mirroring, auto-updating, checking back to see if
additional friends have opted in, etc.
5. Control over attributes - so folks can decide what's public,
what's shown to friends only, etc.
6. Trust metrics, reputation standards, etc.
In other words - we have a long way to go.
But as I said to Peter today "we have to take a phased in
approach to all this."
So let's just get good old fashioned simple import/export working
and get these other features and functionality onto our 'roadmap'
a>.
There's so much to do - if we did it all right now - we wouldn't
have anything left to do.

Microsoft set to sign new deal with UK
government
08/17/2004 06:54 PMMicrosoft is gunning for open source software this week by signing a
new three year deal with the UK Government. Microsoft has indicated
that it will help the public sector get more out of IT by supplying
extra support and services rather than cutting licence fees.
Microsoft's current contract with the UK government is due to expire
early next year. It's not clear what will be in the new deal but it's
likely to be a significant step in the drive for modernising the UK
government.

12/30/2004 11:16 AMAuction site eBay announced to members on its Web site Wednesday
afternoon that it will drop support for Microsoft's Passport and .NET
Alerts by late January. Users were told that "once this takes place,
the Microsoft Passport button that is currently displayed on Sign In
pages will be replaced with links to a page with more information."
The announcement came with practically no warning; however, in recent
months, it had become much more difficult to sign up for alerts
through Microsoft's .NET services as the pages to do so were buried on
eBay's site.

07/23/2004 12:49 PMMicrosoft's decision to return $32 billion to its shareholders may be
a wise business move, but it is also an admission of defeat. With its

decades of spectacular growth, the world's most famous software
company seems resigned to a more sedate middle age.
