03/30/2005 06:11 PMMark Frauenfelder:
The Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link will turn 20 in April. I became a
member in 1989 and though I haven't posted anything there in years,
the discussions I had there and the friends I made have had a profound
influence on my life.
Incredibly, twenty years of living online have sped by
since the Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link opened to members on April 1,
1985. Twenty years is a milestone in the life of any group or town. A
full generation of WELLbeings have changed and been changed by
extraordinary experiences together here. Serious celebration is in
order through the month of April! WELL members past, present and
future are invited to celebrate this milestone with us online and
off.

Google turns 6!
09/07/2004 02:36 PMRegular users of Google might have noticed a new logo on the popular
search engines new page.
Google's 5th year has been explosive, and perhaps it's most important
to date. It's seen its
IPO, a variety of
new features, and
continued dominance of the search market.
Although it's been exciting, they've faced increase competition from
other market players, and had a variety of law suits thrown at
them.
Best of luck to Google, and many happy returns!

Found to be Overwhelmingly Superficial: Here's a summation of a
new Web site credibility report. A little
depressing.
The data showed that the average consumer paid far more
attention to the superficial aspects of a site, such as visual cues,
than to its content. For example, nearly half of all consumers (or
46.1%) in the study assessed the credibility of sites based in part on
the appeal of the overall visual design of a site, including layout,
typography, font size and color schemes.

Joe are screwed.

As the Mac turns 20, has the PC caught
up?
01/22/2004 10:19 AMTwenty years ago this week, during the year of Big Brother, Steve Jobs
and Steve Wozniak introduced the Apple Macintosh. Although the seminal
advert sticks in everyone's minds, it's easy to forget just how
revolutionary that little beige, boxy, Mac was. At the time, Windows
version 1 was still a year away, and overlapping windows and icons on
the PC would not appear for another three years, in the form of
Windows 2--later to be renamed Windows 286. And of course all those
early versions of Windows ran on top of the DOS command-line operating
system.

Celebrates 40 Years of Mainframe Technology: Chris once programmed
one of these to play Doom. Seriously.
Today, IBM marks the 40th anniversary of the System/360,
the mainframe that sparked a revolution in computing and business. The
System/360 was considered by many to be the most sophisticated
computer of its time and is responsible for introducing many important
technologies that are still in use today, such as transaction
processing, micro-circuitry, and databases.
If you're interested in the origin of databases as we know them
today, look up Ted
Codd. He wrote a paper in 1970
that started the whole thing. IBM let it go to waste, but Larry Ellison used to it
to build the Oracle database platform, and he seems to have done okay
for himself.

As the Oddworld Turns
06/17/2004 01:24 PMMATT GALLANT -- Oddworld's game
starring The Stranger, a combination of Clint Eastwood, Rob Halford, Popeye, Mega Man, a
lion, and a monkey, is now once again with publisher. Earlier reports that Microsoft had bought out
Atari's stake in the company turned out to be erroneous; it was
actually Oddworld Inhabitants themselves who bought out Atari by
handing them publishing royalties from Microsoft.
The now fully independent Oddworld is co-habitating with Electronic
Arts to get this still-untitled game out in the world. Will EA now
also pick up the other high-profile game Microsoft dropped from its
rolls, Psychonauts? My sources say, "Gymkat
a!" My sources are fired.
