My tattered passport
My tattered passport
12/24/2004 12:47 PM
I stupidly got a 10 year passport (instead of a 5 year) which is
now approaching the final year in its life. It has become reasonably
tattered. In particular, there is a corner of the passport cover just
where the row of OCR characters starts. This corner is also the
closest to my picture. It started as a minor peel. However, several
immigration officers have picked at it trying to see if it was a fake
(making it worse). Each time a brutal agent swipes it through the OCR
scanner, it gets a little worse. I figure a little bit of glue would
help protect this corner of my passport, but I wonder if putting glue
on my passport to mend a tattered corner is some sort of crime... I
googled around and couldn't find anything. All I found was an article about a Chinese woman who was thrown in jail for
trying to enter the US with a tattered passport.
Yikes!
The Oregonian
In their
latest outrage, they jailed a Chinese businesswoman, whose misfortune
-- and only crime -- was to arrive at the Portland International
Airport with a tattered passport.
Portland immigration inspectors deemed Guo Liming's passport
"suspicious." They forced her to strip to her underwear, searched her,
interrogated her, handcuffed her for transport to The Dalles and
jailed her for two nights -- before concluding [how inconvenient for
them] that her passport was valid.
The problem is, getting
a replacement passport in Japan requires giving up the one you have
for a period longer than I am able to be in Japan for awhile.
Does anyone know anything about whether it would be dumb to try to
put glue on my passport and if not, what sort of glue I should use?
Basically, the corner is peeling into 3 layers. The cover, the paper
and the lamination inside...

Microsoft's Passport to Longhorn
Microsoft's Passport to Longhorn
03/30/2005 01:22 AMMicrosoft will resurrect aspects of its Passport scheme in the
upcoming versions of both Internet Explorer and Windows, according to
a report in the Wall Street Journal.
IE7 and Longhorn will utilise technology reminiscent of the much
maligned Passport identity management scheme to enable Windows users
to give encrypted personal details, including credit card and contact
information to businesses and individuals they trust, the report says.
Unlike Passport, however, an individual's personal data - to be named
'info cards' - will be stored with them rather than centrally with
Microsoft.
Passport received its death knell late last year when eBay rejected
the technology. It had been criticised since its launch, however, with
analyst firm Gartner warning that the technology wasn't secure enough
for businesses and financial institutions.

walking around passport control
walking around passport control
09/02/2004 10:02 AM
I'm at an airport lounge in Frankfurt Airport and just had a weird
experience. There was a huge line and passport control to get into the
terminal with my departure gate for my next flight. I decided to go to
the lounge. It was sort of a long walk, but when I arrived and asked
how to get to my gate, they said it was around the corner - with no
security or passport control. Somehow I just "walked around" the
passport control.
Now I realize that this is inter-terminal passport control so I
have no idea what sort of border it represents, but being able to walk
around it seems a bit weird to me...

12/30/2004 11:16 AMThe newspaper said the software giant had confirmed the step down
after one of the service's biggest backers, eBay Inc. (EBAY: news,
chart, profile), said Wednesday it would stop using Passport next
month in favor of its own product. It said few customers had taken up
the Microsoft (MSFT: news, chart, profile) service. Passport keeps
track of online consumers' credit card and password information as
they move from site to site. It has drawn the ire of privacy
advocates, industry regulators and technology security experts, who in
2003 found a security glitch that could have led to massive identity
theft, the paper said.
