Spinning Spraypainting Scrambler
09/09/2004 09:02 AMRosemarie Fiore re-uses amusement park rides to create works of art.
She’s turned The Scrambler into the world’s largest
spirograph, and uses pinball machines as a painbrush.
Fiore’s selection of the Scrambler to make a painting,
then, is by no means arbitrary. It represents the link between the old
world’s rush of simply being in motion (which itself recalls the
primitive Russian ice slides of the 1700s) and the new turbo-charged
world of the Raptor, where riders are strapped in with powerful foam
restraining devices as their legs dangle freely at 60 mph over the
bunnyhops, and then slowly revolve as they plunge into a horseshoe
turn. Unless you’re being recruited by NASA, chances are
you’ll never experience anything like it. Though it hovers
between these two worlds, the Scrambler’s staying power is most
evident in its subtle product upgrades and name changes-modifications,
I hasten to add, that never stray too far from the original.
Let me runs that quote through my Art Critic to English dictionary
for you.
Hey, she rigged that Scrambler to fling paint everywhere!
Awesome!

Tree-cutting and tag-spinning
Tree-cutting and tag-spinning
02/05/2005 10:19 PMI have been mulling over a big old post about tagging and
folksonomies, but book work has taken priority this week, and by now
most of what I wanted to say has been said by others (
here are
some go
od links).
So this is all I think I'll throw in to the discussion -- and
append to my previously
posted skepticism that people beyond early adopters will pursue
tagging with any avidity: "Tagging" is a great word. "Categories" are
onerous; they sound like work. "Tags" sound like play -- like a game
we played when we were tots. (Hey, it's ludic!)"Categories" also
implies, to many users, a mental model in which each item must live in
one category to the exclusion of others. "Tags" encourages overlap,
duplication, experimentation.
I like the way David Weinberger puts it he
re, as he compares older-fashioned information hierarchies with
folksonomic tagging: "The old way creates a tree. The new rakes leaves
together.... The old way -- trees -- make sense in controlled
environments where ambiguity is dangerous and where thoroughness
counts. Trees make less sense in the uncontrolled, connected world
that cherishes ambiguity." And the world of software is so allergic to
ambiguity that we should cherish any new development that opens a
space within the digital realm for multiple meanings.
If the software that begins to harness the tagging phenomenon can
stay true to the spirit the word evokes, I think it has a chance of
overcoming human intertia and resistance to doing more than the bare
minimum of metadata labor. Which places a premium (as Ross Mayfield points out) on ease of use. If people are going
to tag things at all, you need to make it really easy for them
to do it fast. Del.icio.us -- once
you set up its toolbar shortcut -- is pretty good, though I think it
would be great if it showed you how other people tagged a link
before you did your own tagging. Technorati's experiment with
tagging for blog postings obviously has a very long way to go, but
it's moving in the right direction.
Will the whole thing get debased by commercialism and swamped by spam? Sure. Then we'll return
to the drawing board.

Mark Frauenfelder:
The massive undersea earthquake that caused the tsunami gave a boost
to our planet's spin. As a result, days will be a fraction of a second
shorter from now on.
Richard Gross, a geophysicist with NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory in California, theorized that a shift of mass toward the
Earth's center during the quake on Sunday caused the planet to spin 3
microseconds, or 3 millionths of a second, faster and to tilt about an
inch on its axis.

Republicans send New York Times spinning
Republicans send New York Times spinning
09/03/2004 12:19 PMSometimes the best way to put today’s political press coverage in
perspective is to contrast it with how identical events were covered
in the very near past. Take the New York Times’ coverage of the
Republican and Democratic conventions. The morning after the
Democratic convention concluded, the Times published two, page-one
stories; a straight a news piece about Sen. John Kerry’s address, and
a separate analysis of the themes of the speech. Today, following the
Republican convention, the Times does the same; a news piece on
president Bush address, as well as an analysis. But for the
Republicans, there’s a bonus dispatch, a
valentine-of-a-report (“Buoyed G.O.P. Says It Has Framed
Agenda for Fall”) on how “confident” and “optimistic” Republican
strategists were celebrating their convention, convinced they had
“framed the debate for the fall” and “had succeeded in raising
significant doubts” about their opponent.

Boing reader Pablos says: "
M.I.A.
was scheduled to perform at Chop Suey in Seattle tonight. Apparently
she is having some kind of Visa trouble and her show has been

Some speculate the incident may relate to her father's affiliation
with a Sri Lankan rebel group designated as a terrorist organization
by the US. No news on her site or newsfeeds yet, but she's also
scheduled to play at SXSW this
week.
See also this extensive Pitchfork interview with Ms. Maya

User Deletion Bug/ Dselect Troubles
User Deletion Bug/ Dselect Troubles
11/04/2003 09:22 PM
Quick Summary: DO NOT USE DSELECT, and if you've used it,
check your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list file carefully.
Users who have bootstrapped or installed Fink 0.5.3 or Fink 0.6.0
on Mac OS X 10.3 could exhibit a problem where all users get deleted
from the netinfo database, and you become unable to log in.
We believe that this problem can only occur if you've used dselect.
If you are using Mac OS X 10.3, please be sure you're using the
latest Fink version to avoid the issue. To make sure you don't have
upgrade problems, check your /sw/etc/apt/sources.list
file. You will need to modify it if it contains deb
lines that point to "release" or "current" without a version number.
In other words, if your sources.list file contains
these lines:
deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download release main
deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download current main
...you should change them to this:
deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download 10.3/release
main
deb http://us.dl.sourceforge.net/fink/direct_download 10.3/current
main
We are working on updating the repository to make sure that even
if you update you don't get the broken code, and to
repair dselect, but in the meantime,
make sure your sources.list file has the correct entries.
Other users have experienced problems with dselect itself,
particularly
complaints about a missing "darwin" package. If you are running
dselect
under 10.3 and you don't get this warning, then your
sources.list file is likely to be corrupted and you should
repair it as above.
