Xeni Jardin:
In case you or your TiVo find yourself in front of the TV tonight
(Wednesday, December 29), I'll be appearing on ABC World News Tonight
with Peter Jennings in a segment about a "people of the year" from the
tech world. I'm not one of those people, but like any good loudmouthed
blogger, I'll always have something to say about whoever was chosen.

Xeni on PBS TV tonight -- RFIDs and
privacy
05/06/2004 04:12 PMOn this week's edition of the PBS television program "California
Connected," I join host Lisa McRee with guests
Beth Givens, Privacy
Rights Clearinghouse,
State Senator Debra
Bowen, and
Mark Roberti,
RFID Journal to debate consumer privacy issues related to radio
frequency ID tag (RFID) technology.
There's a great online discussion salon going on concurrently, too,
with Professor Shyam Sunder of the School of Management at
Yale University, Chris Hoofnagle, associate director of the Electronic
Privacy Information Center, Lee
Tien, senior staff attorney at the EFF, and Dr. Daniel Engels of the MIT
Auto-ID Labs.
Dubbed by one skeptical journalist as "Big
Brother in small packages," RFID chips are tiny transponders that
can be attached to almost any consumer good. While companies are set
to use these radio frequency identification tags to track their
merchandise from assembly line to warehouse to store shelf, privacy
watchdogs suggest these same RFID tags could be used to keep tabs on
consumers -- beyond the confines of a store or supermarket.

125-year-old fossil fruitcake coming to
Tonight Show
12/22/2003 12:36 PMA 125-year-old fruitcake, a family heirloom, will appear on Leno.
The cake rests in a glass bowl, covered by a glass top. A large raisin
and what might be a clove are visible among the brown mass - Ford says
it's fossilized - that emits a pleasant odor of spices.
Its baker died in Berkey, Ohio, in 1879 and the cake remained
untouched for 85 years. Someone clipped Bates' obituary out of The
(Toledo) Blade and placed it on top of the cake. Inside the glass
cover someone glued newspaper clippings that read "Mother 1878
November 28." Ford guesses that is when the cake was baked.

Newcomer of the Year
06/02/2004 06:34 PMApple makes Windows apps about as often as Microsoft ships
bug-free products, and if iTunes for Windows (free) is any
indication, thats a crying shame, writes the PC World
editors for the Best of 2004. The iTunes media
player works on PCs the same way it does on Macs, right down to the
handy feature that lets you share your music library with other PC or
Mac iTunes users on your network. It looks great, its easy to
use, and it has a surprising number of useful features, like the
abilities to generate rules-based Smart Playlists and to trim
individual tracks. [Jun 2]

Science News of the Year

David Pescovitz:
Science News have selected what they consider to be the most important
science stories of the year. To read the full texts of their articles
about the topics, you need a subscription. Also of interest though is
the list of the most popular articles that
are freely
available online as determined by the number of visitors to the Web
pages.
The most widely viewed news article described bias in a
heads-or-tail toss of a coin. The most popular feature looked into the
physics underlying a new generation of yo-yos. Other top articles
reported on:
* DNA differences among various breeds of purebred dogs.
* Stone Age human relatives that were surprisingly small.
* Psychology investigations of how, and how well, people recognize
lies.
* A Martian chemical that hints there was once life on the Red
Planet.
* A gene mutation that resulted in a superstrong toddler.
* Technologies developed to mimic ocean animals.

World News Connection® (WNC) is an online news service,
that offers an extensive array of translated and English-language news
and information. Particularly effective in its coverage of local media
sources, WNC provides you with the power to identify what really is
happening in a specific country or region. Compiled from thousands of
non-U.S. media sources, the information in WNC covers significant
socioeconomic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental
issues and events.
The material in WNC is provided to the
National Technical Information Service (NTIS) by the Foreign Broadcast
Information Service (FBIS), a U.S. government agency. For over 60
years, analysts from FBIS' domestic and overseas bureaus have
monitored timely and pertinent open-source materials, including gray
literature. Uniquely, WNC allows you to take advantage of the
intelligence gathering experience of FBIS. The information is obtained
from full text and summaries of newspaper articles, conference
proceedings, television and radio broadcasts, periodicals, and
non-classified technical reports. New information is entered into WNC
every government business day. Generally, this information is
available within 24-72 hours from the time of original publication or
broadcast. WNC is a valuable research tool for anyone who needs to
monitor non-U.S. media sources. This has been added to
Research Resources
Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to
International
Trade Resources 2005 Internet MiniGuide.
